LIVE Interview with DALE KELLY (Narrator, Ginyu) on 1/29/16!
UPDATE: The stream is archived here. Thanks to all who came in to watch the interview and/or submit questions! Dale had a ton of fun sharing his stories with you all and said that he's definitely going to come back on in the near future!
Over the past few months, I've been privately communicating with Dale Kelly via email over the possibility of him perhaps coming onto my show to do a live Q&A sort-of-thing. Recently, he said that he finally has time to take out of his busy schedule to do an interview on my show this upcoming Friday at around 6:30pm CST. This will be the first ever interview he's done, and I am very fortunate to be the one presenting it to this tremendous community of dedicated fans.
• Who is Dale D. Kelly?
Dale "The Captain" Kelly was the original narrator of FUNimation's in-house English dub of Dragon Ball Z from Episode 54: Ginyu Assault (episode 68 uncut) to Episode 179: Free the Future (episode 195 uncut). Dale was also the first in-house actor at FUNimation to play the role of Captain Ginyu. Additionally, he is credited for writing and producing the American soundtracks for both of the Dragon Ball Z TV Specials Bardock: The Father of Goku and History of Trunks.
• What else is Dale Kelly known for?
Director/Producer/Writer Dale D. Kelly has spent the last 30+ years as a broadcaster, voice actor, producer, writer and director. Starting in radio at KOZZ RENO, NV. in 1981, his career included Program Director, Promotions Director, Music Director, and #1 morning personality in several major markets including KZEW in Dallas, KZAP in Sacramento, KRZQ in Reno, NV. and KDJK in Modesto- Stockton. Today, Dale Kelly works on various local shows and programs in the Las Vegas, Nevada area.
• What is TheBalishChannel?
Initially opening my YouTube Channel on April 12th, 2009, I have published numerous "rant" videos, critical analyses, and animated skits for over half a decade to moderate success. More recently however, I've been seen broadcasting alongside my friend mariotehplumber live on Twitch every weekend; we often play through a wide variety of videogames with our viewers/followers, and browse the internet in search of hysterical lunacy.
• How can I get my questions answered?
The purpose of this thread is to provide me with questions that you'd like to hear be answered by the man himself. You're also welcome to share any fond memories you may have of Dale's various performances, as I may also relay positive and/or constructive feedback from the community to him.
• Would it be possible for me to present my questions during the interview in the Twitch Chat?
Yes, I will also be asking questions from the chat. However, I may not be able to get to all of them due to the rapid influx of posts that will undoubtedly come. It is recommended that you post your questions here in the thread before Friday, the 29th.
The stream will take place on Friday, January 29th, at 6:30pm CST. It will be livestreamed on TheBalishChannel's Twitch page and will be archived in the "Highlights" section, with an enhanced archive coming to TheBalishChannel's YouTube page.
Because of Dale's busy schedule, there is a slight chance that the interview may be delayed. In the event that it is, you can get instant updates regarding the schedule if you follow me on Twitter. In addition, you can follow me on Twitch to know exactly when the stream starts.
We hope to see you there! Post those questions!

I have a question for Dale : Were there any other voice actors trying to get the role of Captain Ginyu back in 1999?

I know Schemmel auditioned for the role and felt he nailed the voice. He was even disappointed when he didn't get it. He didn't know Goku was the main character of the series.Tian wrote:I have a question for Dale : Were there any other voice actors trying to get the role of Captain Ginyu back in 1999?

Considering our history, I doubt you will even consider my question. But I would hate myself for not even trying. So I would probably ask Dale if he has watched any form of Dragon Ball Z Kai, and if so, what were his impressions on a condensed version of DBZ.
Congrats on landing this interview. Despite our bickers, I will tune in for this.

Oh wow, I haven't heard that info bit in a long time. I think I first remember reading it via an old text based interview Schemmel had given way, way back in the day. Do you happen to remember where the quote originates from at all?ABED wrote:I know Schemmel auditioned for the role and felt he nailed the voice. He was even disappointed when he didn't get it. As for Dale Kelly, hmm...the only question I can think of is the obvious one: Who's idea was it for the 'monster truck announcer' style for the narration? I don't mean that in an antagonistic way either - I'm genuinely curious how he and the producers of the dub at the time collaborated to come up with that particular route to go with for narration, and whether it was originally his idea (like he went with it and they said 'yes, let's go with that'), or theirs (him trying something and them going 'that was good but can you try it like this instead?').
I also don't know how far your connections go, Balish, as I don't think I've watched any of your videos before (at least to my knowledge). Just to throw it out there though, I'd be interested to see an interview with Mark Britten, the original FUNimation voice actor for Ox King, Korin, Burter, the Grand Kai, and quite a few others. I don't think much has ever been said in regards to where he suddenly went - he didn't seem to stick around till right before the Kai re-castings like Nadolny, Vollmer, Young, and a few others.

I don't remember a specific interview. He's told the story numerous times, so I'm sure you can find either an interview or a Q and A where he gives that answer. Sorry if that's not more helpful.

Nah, no worries. I just didn't remember where I originally heard it outside of that text interview, so I wasn't sure where else he might have told the story or where it first came to light. It was just out of curiosity, no biggie.

If memory serves, it first came to light in the Dallas Observer article in 2000, which was linked on DBZ Uncensored. But if memory also serves, the last time I tried to read it, the link no longer worked. Let me check. Nope. Doesn't work.

I will definitely try to get in contact with some of those actors as well. The next interview I have lined up is with Stephanie Nadolny, who is currently tied-up with working on a brand new Cartoon Network show.Gyt Kaliba wrote:I also don't know how far your connections go, Balish, as I don't think I've watched any of your videos before (at least to my knowledge). That sounds about right. The first time I remember reading the interview (and quite a few others) was shortly after I got into the series, and 1999-2000 was definitely that period of time for me. I don't think I really frequented Uncensored very much (went to Planet Namek almost religiously though), but Goo - well, Yahoo searches, would have turned the links up easily enough back then.Gaffer Tape wrote:If memory serves, it first came to light in the Dallas Observer article in 2000, which was linked on DBZ Uncensored. Ooh, that should prove interesting to see as well, both the interview and the show. I'm now wondering if it's that same show I saw the test pilot for a few years back.TheBalishChannel wrote:I will definitely try to get in contact with some of those actors as well. Ah, found it! If it is that, I'm not entirely sure this Regular Show/Adventure Time style humor is particularly my cup of tea, but I'd definitely give it a shot.

Since I'm not really familiar with his voice work, I'd be interested to hear what went into doing the music for the Specials, and if he's heard the Japanese scores for them.

I'd be curious to know how he feels about his voice work on the show having been completely deleted by FUNimation.

If he's legally allowed to, I'd love to know why he parted ways with Funimation after 2001.

IIRC, there was one story being told, by I think Sean himself in an interview, that when he went into the studio to record some lines and he saw all of the posters of Goku hanging on the walls, it was then that he realised that he was voicing the main character of the show.ABED wrote:I know Schemmel auditioned for the role and felt he nailed the voice. If there's still time, I'd like to know if he's heard any of the other Funi narrators' work either on Z or any of the other series, and if so what he thinks of their approach. Also, did he get a chance to hear the original Joji Yanami narration at any point before/during/since doing it himself?

Was it difficult for him to deliver the goofy lines Funimation's writers came up with? Stuff like "Krillin's In Da House!"
