HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
I have come upon a very popular anime streaming site run by ads mostly, that has Dragon Ball the anime in 960x720, and Dragon Ball Z in 1080p 16x9, which is of course, off the season Blu Rays. I am quite sure the season sets of part 1 were at 480p, correct? The Blue bricks, if you will. But this is no 480p?

is it upscales of standard footage? Also, is it a legal site? We do not discuss illegal sites here ^^

1. You shouldn't really be talking about streaming sites here because of the rules.huzaifa_ahmed wrote:I have come upon a very popular anime streaming site run by ads mostly, that has Dragon Ball the anime in 960x720, and Dragon Ball Z in 1080p 16x9, which is of course, off the season Blu Rays. 2. Most streaming sites don't know what the rules are for encoding/compressing video and will oftentimes blow up the DVD footage, slap a few filters on it, and call it "HD" but in reality is far from it.
3. I would probably assume that the same is the case for the DBZ episodes on that site, as most of these sites have been around since the first Orange Bricks were released and have no real reason to "upgrade" to the Blu-ray footage.

What you've been watching on those (most likely) pirated streaming websites are just upscales. There is in fact HD footage of Dragon Ball as FUNimation has released the Dragon Ball movies 1-4 digitally in high definition but that's about it for now.
You can find screenshots here, I myself had links to more screenshots but lost track of it as to where it is.
Regardless of the crushed blacks (which ends up on loss of detail) I'll still get this on Blu-ray if FUNimation releases it.

Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
Yes, its great that this is a devoted fan community which greatly respects the chosen franchise, but I am looking for an official release of this quality. If I were to so choose, I could just as easily watch on the site, the name of which I didnt mention either. And It's fairly obvious that these things exist, no? I'm not spreading links or anything like that.clutchins wrote:1. And I believe the site HAD the old orange bricks and a lower quality of part 1(presumably from the blue bricks) some time ago. I noticed this likely the beginning of this year, for the Z episodes. I am 100% certain its the recent release. Very similar colors and same exact cropping/pan-scan technique; it is different from the old bricks.
Dont get me wrong, the blue bricks are great, far better than the majority of Z releases, but if I can purchase it in HD at not substantially higher price point, that is a great prospect.
Obviously links are out of the question, but this being the greatest Dragon Ball fansite and wiki to ever exist...I figured the good folks on this board would know about the official release.

Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
Dragon Ball doesn't exist beyond 4:3 640x480 DVD quality footage yet. There is no sign that the series itself will be rescanned in HD by Funimation anytime soon. The movies are streaming in HD on their website in 4:3 1440x1080p. That's as far as the official release has gone.huzaifa_ahmed wrote:Yes, its great that this is a devoted fan community which greatly respects the chosen franchise, but I am looking for an official release of this quality. Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
As clutchins stated, there's no official releases of the original DB in HD. When it comes to the TV series, I think my own transfer of episode 58 is the only HD footage in the world so far.
However, considering that we're getting a new series this year, my guess is that Toei will release blu-rays of old TV series and movies soon.

It probably won't happen but I'd much rather have one from them than another wide-appeal, DNR'd to hell, cropped DBZ release.

Every 'HD' Toei release lately has been an upscale, so I hope to God they don't release DB on Blu-ray any time soon.

I think so, as long as the link doesn't give immediate access to streaming full episodes or movies. But, I'm not staff, so who knows.huzaifa_ahmed wrote:Am I allowed to post a 30 second clip on here? Of the HD footage I mean

I know what site he's talking about and it's just upscaled DVD footage with filters, as I predicted.One_Instance wrote:I think so, as long as the link doesn't give immediate access to streaming full episodes or movies. Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
I meant, FUNimation has the Dragon Ball movies 1-4 remastered in HD, possibly the Z movies too and Kai 2.0 all to be released on Blu-ray so this is more likely to be released earlier than Toei's Dragon Ball on Blu-ray.clutchins wrote:Here's hoping Toei announces a new Dragon Ball Blu-ray release.

If being realistic, if Toei touches it it's possibly going to be like they did with Kai 1.0 which admittedly looks pretty good but not as impressive as FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z Level Blu-rays.

Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
I can't speak for Kei, but I personally expect Toei will want to ride the wave of excitement the news series generates as much as possible. The Japanese Dragon Boxes were released over a decade ago. Putting the old show on Blu ray seems like a logical step to take now that the franchise is super popular again.

Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
"HD" in regards to Dragon Ball is quite a misnomer. Anything not filmed in HD simply can't be HD, but rather re-encoded into similar specs. There's a reason it's always less impressive than what Crunchyroll considers SD (aside from JSAT, BoG and RoF, of course).

Re: HD Dragon Ball (part 1) footage exists?
Unless I'm misunderstanding, I'm not really sure what you're getting at? Dragon Ball was shot on 16mm film, which can very easily be scanned at a large resolution and presented at 1080p; as we've seen with the Level sets and Kei's very own screenshots in this thread.Dayspring wrote:"HD" in regards to Dragon Ball is quite a misnomer. You're right that you can take anything an encode it into whatever format your heart desires. That's precisely what's going on with OP's website, but I'm a little confused as to what your post refers to. It comes across as though you believe anything not created digitally in HD is an upscale.
Side note: the JSAT has never been released in HD. Rips lurking around online are filtered upscales.
