So here are some scans for...academia....

These are the Viz Big editions only. I don't have the previous releases. Sorry if the scans are a bit hard to see. I did my best to clean them up.

Those are SUDS! I was expecting like, two or three bubbles covering the nipples, not lather bikinis.
Such a pathetic edit...

Wasn't there some filler on Planet Namek that had basically the same thing? It had Bulma talking to her father on the phone while in the bath. It seemed pretty stupid then too.

Bulma's boobs must be filthy if she has to lather them up that much.

Well hey, now I could let my young cousins or kids from church read my copy. Covering up a teenage girl's sizeable, fully-exposed breasts in a children's manga is understandable, IMO. Uncut would be fine and dandy for us older fans, but not really be cool for the other audiences (yes, besides us) who would be reading them.

I'm more concerned about name changes and violence edits. We heard something about "updated dialogue," or something, right? Hopefully that means "Vegetto" will be named as we know him this time around. Let's give #17 his handgun back too, while we're at it.

Either way, I'm still gonna be getting these. Color, bigger, higher-quality printings when I don't own any of the manga yet is a win-win for me, even if the level of censoring is the same as the old releases.

Good thing I stuck with the individual volume releases from Shonen Jump. It's uncencored!

As I recall, even the SJ volumes were censored. (Mr. Popo's lips for example.)

Still haven't gotten any word on Borders getting them in yet.

Well maybe they SHOULDN'T be reading it then. There are warnings on the back of the books; they shouldn't alter Toriyama's artwork to protect over sensitive kiddies. Even though it is a childrens manga in America due to soccer moms screaching with fear every time a boob is revealed it actually morphs into a teen rated manga.
( No I'm not saying Dragonball is a manga for REAL MEN.)

Viz is still censoring it? Guess I'll never own the manga in English.

Somehow I doubt any actual children mind the nudity. These sort of changes are always put in place to placate parents who don't want their children to see those kinds of things.

Damn, what a bummer. The dilemna of a US Dragonball fan will never end, eh?

Fair enough then let me rephrase.
"Toriyama's artwork shouldn't be altered to protect over sensitive soccer moms." I can't stand when people censor manga, I don't feel it's right to edit another males or females art just to protect pansies that love to complain.

I agree that, to some extent, it should be a matter of controlling whether they read it or not. But still. It's a kids manga. They can't have a teenage girl's developed, fully-exposed breasts in there.

It's a matter of what's acceptable in each society. Nudity in such contexts is met with, "hee hee hee Yamcha's afraid of women and now he saw Bulma in the shower" in Japan. But in the USA, it'll be seen as, "oh my god, that girl is naked, this is pornographic material! Why didn't someone tell me about this before I bought it for my kid without checking it first?! Who do I sue about this?!"

Japan: Boobs = humor
USA: Boobs = lawsuit

It's still a shame, but it's what has to happen for it to be released. I'll deal with a nudity edit or two in order to be able to read it, rather than boycotting it.

I think that everything censored should have to run a disclaimer, like they do on TV; "This book has been edited from the original version. It has been moderated to fit a United States form of decency where blood spills all over the place, but a naked body MUST NEVER BE SEEN."

Honestly... so ridiculous. I was in an intimate relationship before I saw someone get hit and killed in a car accident, and I've got to say, the least damaging of the two experiences was definately the one with the naked-ness as opposed to the blood-splatter.

Any-which-way... cursing, Mr. Satan, naked-filled Dragonball doesn't seem to be coming to us anytime soon. And that horrid live action flick on the way... I just hope Burst Limit and whatever the new animation short next year are great. That Burst Limit XBox demo seemed to hold promise!

Making an uncut edition isn't really that hard.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

As for Dragonball being a kid's manga I agree that it is, but in America as you have stated it would fall under what would be more socially acceptable for teens so they put the teen logo on the back. Wouldn’t that null all plausible lawsuits, because the parents were warned before checkout? (I don't claim to be a legal expert so I could very well be wrong about that.)Basically uneducated parents are to blame for this, so in my eyes the censorship is no way justified.

Normally I don't complain about small changes but what Viz is doing is like me running into the art room at school and doodling all over the top rated student’s latest drawing because she drew something I thought was wrong. It just seems to me like defacing art.

I think the issue is more of the fact that we're the only country (that I know of) that has to edit these. Everywhere else, they're cool with it. Also, I love that I can pick out her nipples even with those bubbles there.

I got yer crooked, low-quality comparison right here! Taken from "cat" VIZ Shonen Jump line.

I tried my best, but I don't have one of those fancy rolling scanners. I just stuffed it on mine and hoped it did the trick.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
