This week we add animator Masahiro Shimanuki to the “Animation Styles Guide”! Shimanuki was the second animation supervisor in the series from the Seigasha animation studio, following Tomekichi Takeuchi, and would rotate the role of animation supervisor with Kazuya Hisada throughout the remainder of Dragon Ball Z. This would be Shimanuki’s first major stint as an animation supervisor, but he would go on to be an animation supervisor for other significant series produced by Toei Animation, such as One Piece and Toriko. As always you can read more about Shimanuki in the guide, but be sure to come back in a week to check out our next featured animator!

It feels kinda weird to see a shot from Hisada’s cuts in this article.
Well the screen shots are from episodes supervised by Shimanuki, not necessarily just of shots drawn by him. And it’s sometimes hard to pick out the exact scenes each animator drew in every Seigasha episode because their drawing styles are fairly cohesive.
I think I preferred when Shimanuki acted as the Animation Supervisor, if only so that it would give Hisada more time to work on his cuts as a key animator. Then again, one of Hisada’s best cuts–the Vegeta training scene from episode #125–was done in an episode where he was the animation supervisor, so I suppose it’s all mute. 😳
I just wanna say this whole Animation Styles Guide is a dream come true for a hardcore Dragon Ball fan, like myself. Thank you for all your hard work. And please keep it up!
Yea, this Animation Styles Guide is pretty awesome.
Great job on the Animation Styles Guide! Keep up the good work.
