Japanese media news site Bunka Tsūshin recently interviewed Hidenobu Muramatsu, Toei’s movie sales and box-office manager, and Yasushi Sutō, Toei’s planning/production manager, in the March 2015 issue of their monthly print publication, “Cultural News Journal”. While the majority of the interview focuses on Toei’s work line-up for 2015 and future business strategies, some of it is spent discussing Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”, including their overall goals and expectations for its success.

Back in 2013, leading up to the premiere of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Toei revealed that their box-office goal for the film was to hit ¥3 billion. However, Muramatsu states that this time Toei is aiming to surpass their previous goal by ¥1 billion, setting the box-office revenue goal for Revival of “F” at ¥4 billion.

2月初旬時点で前売券は前作(30億円)比30%増で推移しており、今回は「40億円を狙う」(村松氏)という。

As of early February, pre-release ticket sales are trending towards a 30% increase compared to the same point for the previous film (which made 3 billion yen [at the box office]), and this time “we’re aiming for ¥4 billion”, says Muramatsu.

In addition to this lofty goal, the interview reveals that Revival of “F” will see an “ultra-expansion in showings” with the film set to premiere on “640-650 screens” across Japan. In comparison, Battle of Gods premiered on 312 screens in Japan (as reported by Cinema Today).

The story for Revival of “F”, opening nationwide in Japan 18 April 2015 in 2D and IMAX 3D, is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director and animation supervisor. Norihito Sumitomo will return from Battle of Gods and the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai for musical composition duties. Momoiro Clover Z will contribute a song alongside Maximum the Hormone, whose “F” will be used as a “battle song” during the film. Revival of “F” is set to bring back Freeza and will also include two new characters (Sorbet and Tagoma), feature Beerus and Whis again from Battle of Gods, and much more.
