Episode Summary

Opening

When seven magic Dragon Balls are collected and the password is recited, a dragon named Shenlong appears to grant the summoner any wish.

Son Goku is an incredible warrior who lived in the mountains as a child, searched for the Dragon Balls while going on many adventures, and grew into adulthood with his new friends.

One day a vicious battle race called the Saiyans arrived on Earth — it seems that Goku was himself a Saiyan that had been sent to Earth as an infant. Saiyans maintain a youthful body for much of their lives.

Throughout his life, Goku continued to face terrifying enemies and overcome these challenges to protect Earth. Now the Earth faces a new threat…

Part A

Glorio’s “airplane” takes off at blazing speeds, and soon the Earth is already out of sight. Kaiōshin explains that Demon Realm planes function on magic power, so they’re very fast! Kaiōshin confirms with Glorio that they are headed to Warp-sama, which is explained to Goku as a transit point between the Demon Realm and the outside world. According to Glorio, the closest Warp-sama to Earth is in the Rakka System near Planet Batapi.

Goku accidentally extends Nyoibō, hitting the roof of the ship.

Kaiōshin recaps with Glorio: he was sent by the king of the Third Demon World in order to defeat King Gomah. Goku wonders how strong this “King Tama” is (which Kaiōshin corrects as “Gomah”); Glorio explains that he’s small, crafty, and has amazing magical power… but since Goku defeated Majin Boo, he should be able to defeat Gomah. Goku says they need to hurry up, rescue Dende, and return to normal, too!

They arrive at Planet Batapi, but Kaiōshin asks for a brief stop so he can relay their location back to Kibito. After concentrating for a moment, they move on.

Goku spots Warp-sama off in the distance, exclaiming that it looks like a giant goldfish! Warp-sama is not pleased by this, but Goku is really hung up on it. Kaiōshin repeatedly tries to get Goku to stop talking, since Warp-sama may not let them through if they anger him. Goku still wonders, though: if he’s not a goldfish, maybe he’s like a pop-eyed goldfish? Kaiōshin grabs Goku and shoves him in the back of the ship as Warp-sama asks them to identify themselves. Glorio does so, noting that he passed through here recently. There are two more with him, though, and Glorio lies, saying they are from the Demon Realm as well. Warp-sama asks to see their ears, and while Kaiōshin’s are properly pointy, Goku’s are not… but some magical energy seems to correct that problem. More or less satisfied, Warp-sama then asks for the correct PIN to be let through. Glorio explains you need an application and then to be granted a PIN in order to use Warp-sama; Kaioshin responds that there didn’t used to be a PIN necessary. Glorio provides the PIN of 8821, and they are granted entry through Warp-sama‘s mouth.

Kaiōshin forgot to tell Kibito the PIN! Unfortunately they are out of time, and are whisked away to the next transit point. Goku and Kaiōshin are a little worse for wear, but gather their wits and ask if they’re in the Demon Realm yet. They are still in between, though; the Demon Realm is separated into three zones, and each has its own entry point from here. The first hatch can only be entered by palace members from the First Demon World, and they’re entering through the third hatch. Kaiōshin remarks that this is the furthest from where Gomah is, so shouldn’t they at least go through the second? Glorio only received clearance for the third, however. This time Small Warp-sama appears before them, asking if they’re heading back to the Demon World, and hurries them along through the third hatch. The plane tumbles through space again, and they finally exit down in the Demon Realm!

The Third Demon World is filled with floating rock islands, the occasional shrubbery, a flying dragon, and exploding volcanoes. Kaiōshin remarks again that he was unable to give Kibito the PIN, but Goku supposes things will be fine.

Goku notices something strange below, which Kaiōshin explains as the Demon Realm tunnel system. Long ago, one could freely travel between the worlds, but even by the time he was young, this light shield had been placed over it leaving Warp-sama as the only read travel method. However, the only people who can use Warp-sama are people of the First Demon World and select members of the Second Demon World. Kaiōshin wonders how Glorio can use it, since he seems to be from the Third Demon World. Glorio says that he works in the First Demon World. Kaiōshin wonders what kind of work exactly, but Glorio hesitates and mutters just this and that. As they continue to fly on, Goku notices something down below: it’s a giant stone statue of Dabra, the previous king. It seems to be in bad shape these days. Goku says the sky looks a little funny, too; he thought everything would be a little more creepy, but it’s actually not too different from Earth. Kaiōshin says there are plants and animals Goku has never seen before, and land masses here in the Third Demon World can float.

Goku wants to get out, so Glorio lands the plane. Goku takes a few deep breaths, but says something smells kind of bad. The air also feels stuffy, making it hard to move. Glorio says it’s the gas covering the area, making the air heavy. Goku runs along, taking in the sights. Kaiōshin notes that it’s his first time in the Third Demon World. Glorio recognizes Kaiōshin as a “Glind”; if memory serves him, Glind used to live in the Second Demon World, so he’s sure Kaiōshin’s sophisticated kind never had any reason to grace the Second Demon World with a visit. Kaiōshin side-eyes Glorio as Goku hops along with some kind of small rodent. Goku almost falls off a cliff in the process; Glorio says if he falls into the Sea of Darkness, he’ll perish instantly.

Meanwhile, some demons with weapons watch over them from the clifftops…

Part B

Goku senses an attack coming, and the demons up above fire a flurry of arrows down at them. Goku is easily able to hop out of the way, though; Glorio says this is because the air is so heavy. Glorio rushes in, avoiding arrows and spears, and fires his gun at the group. The bandits retreat in response.

There is still a ways to go, so Glorio and the others continue on toward the nearest town to stay in a hotel for the night; he’ll take them to see King Kadan, the king who sent Glorio on his mission, tomorrow.

Kaiōshin reckons they are flying rather slow; Glorio responds that if they fly too fast, the air resistance will break the plane’s machinery. Goku notices a volcano floating in the sky, and Glorio explains that it’s the gas that the volcano spews that makes the air so heavy, and therefore also makes it difficult to fly planes around them. There are lots of volcanoes here, which Goku figures must be why it stinks so much. He could fart any nobody would even notice! Soon after, Goku farts.

Glorio notes that it was night on Earth when he picked them up, so they must be getting tired. The group lands their ship alongside a few others in a town as a variety of demons keep an eye on the gang.

Glorio and the others try to arrange for hotel rooms, but the owner wants 30,000 dokuro per room. This seems to be too much for Glorio, so he reaches through, grabs the owner, and gives him a glimpse of his gun. The price is suddenly only 5,000 per room. Two keys are handed over, and Glorio says he will come for Goku and Kaiōshin in the morning. Goku is still a little hungry though, so they head to a bar across the street which should have hamburgers.

The trio walk in and are clearly unwanted, but Glorio orders a couple drinks and five hamburgers per Goku’s request. Goku thinks the food is delicious and wonders what it’s made out of; Glorio suggests he not worry about that. Despite them minding their own business, the gang are interrupted by a loud green demon who notices Goku’s ears are not pointy. More and more demons join in the argument, until Glorio tosses a drink at the green one and proceeds to take out a few more, asking for another drink at the end. Another demon goes after Goku, who easily fends him off with a hamburger in his mouth and plates in his hands. Goku continues fighting, making sure not to waste any food. After a little stretching, Goku continues his fight, getting used to the air along the way, and taking bites when the opportunity arises. After all that he’s still hungry, so Glorio orders another hamburger.

As Goku and Kaiōshin sleep it off, a couple demons run away saying they’ll make them pay…

Glorio gets the gang together in the morning, only to walk out and find his plane missing with a note left behind stuck to a hatchet!

Episode Notes

  • After two episodes with no eyecatches at all (opting instead for a small Dragon Ball Daima logo in the corner of the screen noting the commercial break), episode three debuts a two-part animated eyecatch: Goku twirling Nyoibō on the right side of the screen with the series logo on the left (reminiscent of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z eyecatches), and then a group shot of Goku, Panzy, Kaiōshin, and Glorio in an outdoor landscape.

Character & Location Names

  • King Kadan (カダン王; kadan-ō)
In line with other plant-based names in the series, “Kadan” likely takes his name from the Japanese word for “flower bed” (花壇; kadan).
  • Rakka System (ラッカ星系; rakka-seikei)
Mentioned by Glorio, the “Rakka” System is likely a play on the Japanese word for “peanuts” (落花生; rakkasei). If this is the case, this is at least the third time this pun has been used, following the character Rakasei in the third theatrical Dragon Ball Z film from 1990, and then as a planet name in the Akira Toriyama and Masakazu Katsura one-shot manga introducing the Galactic Patrol, Sachie-chan GOOD!! from 2008.
  • Planet Batapi (惑星バタピー; wakusei batapii)
Mentioned by Glorio, the planet “Batapi” likely takes its name directly from shelled skinless peanuts prepared in butter (バタピー; batapii).
  • Glind (グリンド人; gurindo-jin)
Glorio recognizes Kaiōshin as what is rendered in the official simulcast English subtitles as a “Glind”. This may possibly be an anagram of the Japanese word for “acorns” (どんぐり; donguri), transforming do·n·gu·ri into gu·ri·n·do.

Translation & Language

  • When Kaiōshin explains how airplanes from the Demon Realm run, the official simulcast English subtitles render this (seemingly as a proper noun) as “Magic Power”; Kaiōshin is simply using the general Japanese word for “magic” or “supernatural power” here (魔力; maryoku).
  • There are a lot of theories out there as to what the PIN of “8821” might be in reference to! One that’s hard to ignore is Masako Nozawa’s 88th birthday happens to have lined up with this episode’s debut.
  • Goku nearly falls into what the official simulcast English subtitles render as the “Sea of Darkness” (暗黒の海; ankoku no umi).
  • What is rendered in the official simulcast English subtitles as “shield of light” is indeed spoken aloud by Kaiōshin with the English word “shield” (光のシールド; shiirudo).
  • The note left behind after the plane is stolen appears to be moderately embellished, horizontally-flipped katakana (モラッテイクゼバーカ), roughly meaning, “We’re taking your ship, losers”.

Staff & Cast

  • Though this episode contains a smaller cast of voiced characters compared to the previous two, notable actors flesh out the Demon World inhabitants:
    • Takashi Matsuyama plays the hotel owner, having previously played Daigen in Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Soldier #15 in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
    • Kensuke Shimizu plays the bartender in what may be his first Dragon Ball role.
    • Tarō Yamaguchi (previously Soldier #3 in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero), Yūsuke Handa (previously a slew of minor roles in Dragon Ball Kai and Dragon Ball Super, as well as Kibito here in Dragon Ball Daima), Tōru Nakane (perhaps in his first Dragon Ball role), Yūsuke Namata (notably Baby in Dragon Ball GT, but also a slew of minor roles from Dragon Ball Z onward), and Ōta Volcano (a few minor roles in Dragon Ball Super, but notably Magenta in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero) all play various demons.

Animation Alterations

Various scenes were altered in composition, special effects, and/or for content between initial trailers and the final episode broadcast. These include (but are not limited to) the following scenes. The initial trailer scenes are shown below, which you can hover over to view the scene as it was eventually seen within the episode.

  • The specifics of the rock and cliff rendering is different in the initial teaser compared to the final episode, with added motion blur and fewer clouds.

  • The complexity, layers, and overall rendering of the light shield protecting the tunnel is slightly different in the initial teaser compared to the final episode.

  • The drawings and composition of Kaiōshin and Goku sleeping are different in the initial teaser compared to the final episode.
