Episode Summary

Opening

When seven magic Dragon Balls are collected and the password is recited, a dragon named Shenlong appears to grant the summoner any wish.

Son Goku is an incredible warrior who lived in the mountains as a child, searched for the Dragon Balls while going on many adventures, and grew into adulthood with his new friends.

One day a vicious battle race called the Saiyans arrived on Earth — it seems that Goku was himself a Saiyan that had been sent to Earth as an infant. Saiyans maintain a youthful body for much of their lives.

Throughout his life, Goku continued to face terrifying enemies and overcome these challenges to protect Earth. Now the Earth faces a new threat…

Part A

Panzy notices someone approaching the plane — it’s the Namek Neva. As Neva meets the group, Gomah and Degesu remotely watch on their monitors. Goku wonders if this Namek lives here? Neva notices Glorio holding a sack with a Dragon Ball inside, an excitedly sings a little tune. Vegeta figures this guy is senile and they should just leave, but Piccolo steps forward and tells him to drop the act. Is he the legendary Namek, Neva? This little one is a rare warrior type it seems, and reminds Neva of Katatz. That was his parent; he is named Piccolo. It’s a strange name — what is he doing here? Piccolo keeps pushing back, saying Neva should know better than anyone; he expected all of this to happen, so he pretended to be senile and came to Earth with Gomah to use their Dragon Balls. Piccolo still wants to know why they were turned into children, but Neva says that was Gomah’s request, since he feared they might invade the Demon Realm, and they wouldn’t be a threat if they were children. Piccolo wonders what Neva might have done instead if a different wish was made, but Neva says he’d still play dumb. The topic of Dende comes up as well, and Neva agrees that Gomah would not actually hurt (or even worse, kill) him, since Earth’s Dragon Balls would then be useless. Even Neva, however, didn’t expect them to be this strong and gathering the Demon Realm Dragon Balls. Goku explains their plan is to use these Dragon Balls to become adults again, and then save Dende. They have one Dragon Ball, and their on their way right now to get the second one. Panzy puts it together and realizes this is the guy who made the Tamagami; with such powerful creations, he could have just taken down the Demon King himself! Neva says that Nameks must not use their power for conflict; everyone side-eyes Piccolo. Glorio wants to get going again, since Gomah must know they’re here now. Neva wants to come along, but Panzy says the plane is already too crowded. Neva asks if anyone can speak the Namek language, since they’ll have to make the wish in that language. Bulma says this is just like Porunga on Planet Namek! Goku asks if Piccolo can speak the language, but he says he’s been on Earth too long. Neva thinks this is the perfect reason he should come along!

After Koo’s loss to Tamagami Number One, Arinsu (with Koo in tow) is back at Marba’s to concoct another fighter. Koo says it was too dangerous to keep fighting, and is proud of himself for how observant he is; Arinsu thinks he shouldn’t be so proud. They clearly didn’t use enough essence of Boo last time. Marba pours is all of the remaining fragments this time, and a huge purple glow emanates from the cauldron. There is one seed left, and Marba thinks they should bury it 10 centimeters deep, but Arinsu says it’s their last chance: bury it 20 centimeters deep. Marba thinks this is too big a gamble, but Koo says he’ll handle it if things get out of control! They need it to be strong enough to defeat a Tamagami, because even if she becomes the Demon King, it won’t last long without their support.

Hybis says his butt hurts from sitting back in the cargo area, but there aren’t enough seats for everyone. Bulma starts grilling Neva on his name, living back in that area all alone, and Panzy joins in to ask if he gets lonely. Kaiōshin can’t help but jump in as well, asking why he didn’t leave with the rest of his kind, but Neva says he likes it there, and needs to keep it save for when everyone returns. Bulma asks why he created the Tamagami, since Earth’s Dragon Balls don’t have anything like them. Originally the Dragon Balls of this realm were meant as a kind of reward, but when bad people learned about them and began using them for foolish reasons, Neva made it so they couldn’t be gotten so easily. Goku thinks the plane is moving too slow; their previous one could have been there already. Vegeta chimes in, saying he gets to fight the next Tamagami since Goku already fought one. Goku doesn’t think this is fair, and asks Neva if two different people can fight the Tamagami in sequence. This is fine, so long as the actual fights themselves are one-on-one. Neva can’t believe they’re actually excited about fighting the Tamagami!

Marba pours her cauldron into the pot, and has Arinsu add her saliva once more. Koo digs and measures the hole for the seed, then pauses and reflects: this new guy is going to be his brother, right? He’s always wanted a brother! Arinsu supposes so, but who cares? Excited, Koo then buries and waters the seed. Everyone steps back as the concoction begins to erupt. Arinsu asks Marba what this Majin’s name is: it’s Majin Doo! As the surroundings crumble away, we see a chubby, green Majin turn around with a serious face…!

Part B

Doo screams out of nowhere, unleashing a massive shockwave. He then proceeds to bend over and shake his butt before raising one arm in the air and greeting everyone with an “N’cha!” Arinsu and Marba are shocked into their own “N’cha!” in response. Doo wants chocolate! Marba doesn’t have any, so Koo asks for money to go get some at the convenience store. He runs there and back quickly, and shares a bar with an appreciative Doo. Koo opens his own bar, and is happy to to split this one with his new brother. Doo grabs the larger half, sending Koo into a tirade… which is only half-real, since he always wanted to fight over snacks! Doo (with Koo on his head) walks up to Arinsu and asks what he’s supposed to do. She wants him to go fight something called a Tamagami, and when Doo readily agrees, Marba thinks this might have just worked out after all. Arinsu still isn’t so sure.

Glorio continues piloting the plane as most everyone sleeps, but they finally begin to approach the second Tamagami, who floats up along the far side of a cliff.

Meanwhile, Arinsu and her comrades arrive back at Tamagami Number One. Doo walks up and introduces himself, ready to fight! Koo cheers on his brother! The Tamagami raises its sword, but Doo just starts jumping up and down… before spinning down at his opponent! The Tamagami grabs Doo and flings him back, but Doo uses the wall to bounce back, stopping right before he reaches the Tamagami to then zip all over the place. The Tamagami tries to attack, but Doo is able to stop on a dime, resulting in some embarrassing hits. The Tamagami fires an energy blast, which prompts Doo to try creating one of his own in his hand; while looking at it, however, the blast explodes in his face. Doo shrugs it off.

Vegeta gets in some light stretching as the group arrives at Tamagami Number Two. Panzy explains that, while it looks like a statue, it will move if you challenge it. This Tamagami is really strong, and not even powerful demons have been able to beat it; is this Vegeta guy really up to the task? Bulma smiles and says to just watch and see.

Gomah and Degesu continue their remote viewing of Vegeta and company arriving for their fight. Degesu says it doesn’t seem like the spikey-haired one is going to fight, but Gomah corrects him that this one ALSO has spikey hair.

Vegeta flies over to and challenges the Tamagami, who remarks that this child should stop joking, and head on home to his mother. The Tamagami laughs, but then notices Neva waving from afar; it then apologizes, saying this is apparently a serious fight. The Tamagami swings its trident around and commences the fight. Vegeta immediately fires a ki blast, and the two trade blows and dodges, intermixed with more energy blasts. Vegeta finally gets a rush of hits in and wraps up with a larger energy blast; Bulma smiles yet again, saying Vegeta hasn’t even gotten started. The Tamagami strikes with the trident several times, and lands a slash to Vegeta’s face.

Doo continues his own bizarre assault on Tamagami Number One, zipping all around and firing energy blasts.

Tamagami Number Two repels Vegeta’s blasts back at him, knocking him down into the ocean… where a kraken finds its next meal! The kraken begins to inhale as Vegeta struggles to swim away. With a burst of energy, Vegeta is able to escape to the sky… where Tamagami Number Two is waiting for him, and proceeds to smack him right back down into the kraken’s mouth.

Episode Notes

• Neva’s poor excuse for a tune is actually from the opening theme to the original Dragon Ball television series from 1986, “Mystical Adventure!“:

  Let’s grab up the Dragon Balls!

  The official simulcast English subtitles render this as “Let’s go grab them up! The Dragon Balls!” which matches the translation used for the existing subtitles on streaming services.

• Upon meeting Piccolo, Neva says notes that he is a 戦闘系ナメック人 (sentō-kei namekku-jin), which gets rendered in the official simulcast English subtitles as a “Warrior Namek.” This is in reference to the different types of Namekians as explained over the course of the series, including these “combat” or “warrior” types (as seen with Nail), as well as the “healing” types (as seen with Dende).
• Piccolo says he’s “lived on Earth too long” and therefore can’t speak the Namek language. However, Piccolo — as his current “Piccolo Jr.” incarnation event — spoke this language to Earth’s God (himself in disguise as Shen) at the 23rd Tenka’ichi Budōkai. Compared to how long the child of Katatz existed through his various incarnations (from a single being, to then split between Demon King Piccolo and God, to then a new “Piccolo Jr.” and then merged back together again), not to mention the inclusion of Nail through Namekian assimilation, it seems strange that in this short few decades he would have forgotten the language entirely. Perhaps Piccolo forgets lots of things, like the fact that he can grow large.
• Majin Doo greets everyone with an exclamation of “N’cha!” (んちゃ; n’cha), a condensed “hello” (こんにちは; konichiwa). This greeting was popularized by Arale, the main character of Akira Toriyama’s first full-length manga series, Dr. Slump. Doo raising one hand in the air (along with Arinsu and Marba following suit) is in line with Arale’s usage, as well. Koo’s run for chocolate is likewise styled as Arale’s typical kiiiiiin running style.

Character & Location Names

• Katatz (カタッツ; katattsu)
  The name “Katatz” as Piccolo’s father originates in Dragon Ball chapter 265 — when Kuririn briefly explains the history of Earth’s God and Piccolo, the Namekian Grand Elder presumes it must have been the child of Katatz. The names of both Katatz and Muri come from one of the Japanese words for “snail” (蝸牛; katatsumuri).
• Tamagami Number Two (タマガミ・ナンバー・ツー; tamagami nanbā tsū)
  From the start, the “Tamagami” protecting the Demon Realm Dragon Balls have been written in the closed captions and in the voice credits in katakana as タマガミ (tamagami). This is in contrast to what could have been written with kanji with distinct character meanings as perhaps 玉神 (“Ball Gods” or “Orb Guardians”). As with both Tamagami Number One and Tamagami Number Three, this second Tamagami is referred to with the actual English words “Number Two” for a name.
• Majin Doo (魔ドゥー; majin doo)
  As with Majin Koo before him, the new creation Majin Doo seems to take the name “Boo” and shift the consonant sound from a bu to a du. If this is the case, it would be similar to the name “Bee” for Boo’s dog friend, which shifted the vowel sounds from -uu to -ee. Since we go with “Boo” for a name spelling (as Bibbidi, Bobbidi, and Boo all match their exact katakana spellings from the same source words in the Cinderella song in Japanese), we have gone with spellings of “Koo” and “Doo” for these new characters. The official simulcast English subtitles go with a spelling of “Duu” (presumably to match their FUNimation-English-dub-sourced spelling of “Buu”). This does raise the question, however, of whether there is an intentional “English” spelling direction being made in Japanese with the name series, perhaps going from “B” to “C” to “D”… in which case “Coo” might be a better spelling option.

Translation & Language

• Last Chance (ラストチャンス; rasuto chansu)
  Arinsu uses the full English phrase “last chance” when deciding to plant the seed 20 centimeters deep, as opposed to even a half-English/half-Japanese phrase such as 最後のチャンス (saigo no chansu).
• Brother/Sibling (兄弟; kyōdai)
  Majin Koo uses the word 兄弟 (kyōdai) in reference to the then-forthcoming Majin Doo. While this can mean “sibling” in general, its meaning as “brother” is equally valid and, as Like a Dragon franchise players will be familiar with, does not have to refer to blood relatives when it comes to these kinds of relationships. Cell uses this same terminology when introducing himself to Piccolo (due to their shared DNA harvested by Dr. Gero).
• My Father/Parent (オレの親だ; ore no oya da)
  In keeping with the fact that Nameks do not strictly have a gender (as explained by Dende back in the original series), when Piccolo refers to Katatz, he uses the word for “parent” (親; oya) rather than explicitly “father” (any variation of 父; chichi).

Staff & Cast

• Hideyuki Umezu makes his posthumous Dragon Ball debut as Tamagami Number Two. Umezu passed away earlier in 2024 due to interstitial pneumonia.
