Episode Summary
Part A
Goku calls down to Vegeta, who seems to have been swallowed whole by the kraken. The beast emerges from the water to go after Goku, who dodges and backs up, only to see Vegeta clinging on to a tentacle. Vegeta snaps back, saying he’s not used to having a child’s body yet.
Tamagami Number Two resumes its assault on Vegeta, forcing him to transform into a Super Saiyan and likewise to continue dodging the kraken at the same time. A flurry of blasts from above keeps Vegeta down toward the water, and therefore also still down toward the kraken. Vegeta is finally swallowed, but sparks around himself in the dark kraken mouth, eventually blowing his way out. The kraken, seemingly taking this as a defeat, yawns and moseys on away. Vegeta, now regularly sporting sparks around his aura, starts to fight back against the Tamagami with both ki blasts and physical attacks of his own, finally landing a couple solid punches and kicks direct to its face. Goku lands back down with the others, relieved that Vegeta has finally warmed up. Panzy is in disbelief that his other guy can use magic, too.
Meanwhile, Doo bounces and slinks and cannonballs his way around Tamagami Number One as Koo cheers him on. Doo’s attack suddenly stops, fists mere inches away from the Tamagami’s face. Doo hops back, facing away from the Tamagami, and declares he wants chocolate. Arinsu yells back, telling him that he’s in the middle of an important battle, but there’s no consoling him, as he goes into a full toddler hissy fit. Koo hops away, saying he’ll go get some chocolate. In the meantime, the Tamagami isn’t done fighting — it tosses Doo into a wall, picks up its sword, and flies back in.
Vegeta seems to be winning against the Tamagami, which Neva finds pretty fascinating. The old Namek slams his cane and waves his hands, powering up the Tamagami even more! This little service is to help them fight like they seemingly want to! The Tamagami is much faster now, punching and flinging Vegeta around with its trident, eventually capturing him with an underwater whirlwind.
Doo is on the run from Tamagami Number One, causing enough commotion for the military police to realize what’s going on. The eruptions from the battle finally catch the attention of Degesu and Gomah as well, who are preoccupied inside watching Vegeta’s fight on their monitors. Degesu swipes to another view, and sees a strange monster on the run from the Tamagami! Doo continues to dodge all of the sword swipes, when Koo appears over the wall just in time to fling some chocolate down at his brother! With a satisfied, sparkling gulp, Doo fires a massive blast from his mouth down at the Tamagami, followed by another one for good measure. The blasts push the Tamagami down into the ground, forcing the Tamagami to its knees. Gomah and Degesu survey the surrounding grounds, and see Arinsu on the side with some other demon. Doo spins himself right round toward the Tamagami again, who still hasn’t backed down. At each attack, however, Doo twists and contorts himself around, landing blows each time. After a point-blank energy attack, the Tamagami is down, and Doo strikes a pose. Much to everyone’s surprise, the Tamagami gives up! However, now it’s time for the final challenge.
Gomah wonders who this guy is — perhaps he’s Arinsu’s servant? Degesu wonders to himself what Arinsu is after…
The final challenge for the Dragon Ball is mental arithmetic! A series of numbers will be shown, and Doo must add them all up and provide the final sum as his answer. The numbers begin to appear (1, 4, 8…) slowly at first, but then start appearing in a faster sequence and growing in size (the last number being 59,314,578). The Tamagami then demands the answer! Arinsu protests, saying no-one can do this scam. The Tamagami asks Doo once again… and off to the side, Koo mumbles 683,775,029. Doo’s ears perk up, and he repeats this number back to the Tamagami. It’s correct! Doo doesn’t seem to initially react, but is handed the Dragon Ball, which makes him very happy! Doo presents the Dragon Ball back to Arinsu and performs a little dance. Koo says his little assist was pretty good, too, huh… but Arinsu says all he did was watch.
Gomah can’t believe what he’s seeing. Degesu uncertainly wonders if Arinsu is perhaps protecting the Dragon Ball from the Earth invaders, but Gomah thinks there’s no way she’d do something so generous. The last Dragon Ball better be safe! Degesu switches the monitor back to the ongoing fight, only to see Vegeta (now golden) fighting well back against the Tamagami. Vegeta is thrown underwater once again, however…
Part B
Vegeta cleches his fists and sparks off a huge aura underwater. Back up in the sky, he continues to power up… and his hair begins to grow longer! When the smoke clears, Vegeta is surrounded by sparks, has long hair, and no eyebrows! Goku wonders when Vegeta learned how to do this, but Bulma explains that he’s been training by himself for a while. The Tamagami hesitates and goes to fly in again, but Vegeta is immediately in his face, arms crossed; he spins around with a kick, knocking the Tamagami into the water. Without uncrossing his arms, Vegeta flies down underwater and motions for the Tamagami to attack. Vegeta blocks the trident with a single finger, eventually catching it between two and snapping it in half. Vegeta kicks a shockwave forward, splitting the ocean and leaving a path for him to continue his assault. Arms crossed yet again, Vegeta flies around before making the motion for a Gyalick-Hō. He throws the attack forward at the Tamagami, pushing it for a huge distance… but Vegeta is already in front of him again, landing a solid punch square to the cheek. Vegeta flies ahead to catch the Tamagami mid-air, where it finally gives up. Vegeta drops it down to the ocean without speaking, and reverts back to his normal form. Neva finds this all to be a huge surprise!
The Tamagami fuses its trident back together, and announces it is time for the final challenge before handing over the Dragon Ball. Vegeta will be given a question and ten seconds to answer it. The Tamagami calls forth what seems to be a giant series of cure cards, flips them around to reveal an illustrated story, and begins to read:
The Majin child Johnny gets 15 biscuits from his mother and goes for a walk. After eating one-third of the biscuits, Johnny encounters Jiro the goat. Jiro asks for half of the remaining biscuits, so Johnny hands over half. But Jiro worries he was too greedy and returns two of the biscuits. Johnny then meets Saburo the dog and gives him a biscuit, but Shiro the monkey suddenly appears and steals three. Johnny continues on, keeping his anger under control. He then encounters Ichiro the snake. The kind Johnny decides to give Ichiro the rest of his biscuits.
How many biscuits was Ichiro able to eat? Goku looks down at his fingers in confusion, and Bulma smacks her forehead — Vegeta is no good at this sort of thing. The Tamagami begins to count down, and just as it reaches zero, Vegeta blurts out “zero!” Ichiro ate zero biscuits, because snakes don’t eat biscuits. This is correct — the Tamagami presents the Dragon Ball to Vegeta! Everyone sighs and cheers in relief. The Tamagami apologizes to Neva for not protecting the Dragon Ball, but he shrugs it off, saying the Tamagami fought well. Goku can’t believe Vegeta solved the problem, but Vegeta says they had snakes back on Planet Vegeta. Hybis is actually kind of impressed with Vegeta, and proceeds to do a little victory dance for him. Goku offers one of the Revive Bugs to Vegeta, who declines. Goku says that Vegeta used to eat critters like this, but Vegeta is more refined now. Goku says he doesn’t talk like someone refined.
Kaiōshin announces that they should move on, rescue Dende, and get the third Dragon Ball — it’s time to head to the First Demon World!
Glorio can’t get the ship started for some reason; the engine is pretty old, but Panzy takes a look, hooks things back up, and they’re back in business.
Gomah is losing his mind over this group getting a second Dragon Ball, and Degesu admits they’ll be coming here to the First Demon World. In that case…!

Episode Notes
- Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 12 overlays the title atop footage.
-
While it is a fairly common move in media beyond just Dragon Ball, Vegeta blocking the Tamagami’s trident certainly brings to mind Goku’s own stoic version of the same response when initially challenged by Trunks.
-
Goku remarks that Vegeta used to be completely fine eating critters; indeed, the first real look we ever get at Vegeta in the series is of him and Nappa eating some kind of alien critters (and what may have been the sentient inhabitants of the planet they just destroyed…).
-
While never seen in the series-proper (or even sequel/interquel series like Dragon Ball GT or Dragon Ball Super) up until this point, both Vegeta and Broli were given Super Saiyan 3 transformations for the first time in the card-based arcade game (and predecessor to Dragon Ball Heroes) Dragon Battlers in 2009.
Both then showed up in the first Dragon Ball: Raging Blast game later in 2009 (and in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series itself after that).
-
Whether intentional or otherwise, Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 3 design feels reminiscent of Akira Toriyama’s early sketch designs for the transformation, one version of which sports hair length in between normal length and the final, longer version we see with Goku and Gotenks.
-
Perhaps a testament to the show’s long production pipeline and rollout schedule, an S.H.Figuarts release of “Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta (Mini)” — explicit confirmation of it truly being Super Saiyan 3 — was announced almost immediately after the episode’s broadcast.
