Episode Summary

Opening

When seven magic Dragon Balls are collected and the password is recited, a dragon named Shenlong appears to grant the summoner any wish.

Son Goku is an incredible warrior who lived in the mountains as a child, searched for the Dragon Balls while going on many adventures, and grew into adulthood with his new friends.

One day a vicious battle race called the Saiyans arrived on Earth — it seems that Goku was himself a Saiyan that had been sent to Earth as an infant. Saiyans maintain a youthful body for much of their lives.

Throughout his life, Goku continued to face terrifying enemies and overcome these challenges to protect Earth. Now the Earth faces a new threat…

Part A

The plane seems to be flying now — Glorio thanks Panzy for her work. Panzy calls up Pelar on the plane’s communicator, and explains that she’s radioing in because a kraken ate her phone. She’s fine, but in the meantime, she asks that Pelar tell her father that they got the second Dragon Ball, and now they’re heading to the First Demon World. Pelar is impressed, but says that the king went to steal a plane for himself to travel to the First Demon World. Panzy winces a bit at this, saying she has plenty of people from the outside world with her that are really strong.

Having been listening in, Vegeta comments on a king needing to steal planes, but Panzy says they only had one busted mid-sized plane! He may be a king, but they aren’t rich. Bulma offers up a few planes as gifts if she can get some Majilite!

Meanwhile, Degesu provides an update to Gomah: the military police are almost at the ready. Gomah is most worried about a special group who already seems to have gathered. When he glances over, however, what appear to be five military police members are all chowing down on treats, oblivious to their entry. Degesu clears his throat, and the group pauses as Gomah stares them down. The five immediately take their place as the lights shine down and their pedestals rise:

Special Force Captain: Kademu! Special Force Number Two: Danima! Special Force Number Three: Hiria! Special Force Number Four: Mashimu! Special Force Number Five: Gaimoi!

Together, they are the Military Police Special Force! Gomah lowers his head as the squad starts firing indiscriminately around the room. Kademu wonders what sort of situation required gathering them all together here. Gomah explains that a bunch of renegades, who are currently on their way from the Second Demon Realm, may attempt to invade. Degesu has deactivated Warp-sama, so they theoretically have no way to get here, but the squad has been summoned anyway as a precaution. Kademu wonders who these invaders are; it’s a few children from the outside world and some people from the Third Demon World, but to be more precise, it’s adults who look like children. Gomah says not to let their appearance fool them, but the squad seems confident — Gomah can go ahead and take a bath and play with his fart bubbles. Degesu chimes in, saying the invaders defeated Majin Boo and the Tamagami. The squad thinks this is all a big joke, and continues laughing. Degesu yells that it’s no joke, while Gomah lets them know he’ll be charging them for the repairs to his lobby. A piece of rubble falls down in the following silence. As Gomah and Degesu make their exit, the squad wonders if such people can really exist… it must be an exaggeration… so they should go get more of those awesome chips from the palace convenience store in the meantime.

Glorio stops the ship in front of Warp-sama — something appears to be wrong with it. Neva figures Gomah must have turned it off. Goku hops out of the ship and pokes at Warp-sama with Nyoibō, but there’s no response. Vegeta asks Hybis if there’s another way to get there, but that’s a negative. Kaiōshin says that the tunnel that leads to the First Demon World is blocked by a light shield. Goku extends Nyoibō down below just to see if it’s really blocked, but Panzy yells that he’ll die if he touches it. A blast of lightning comes up through Nyoibō, frying Goku and knocking him down toward the shield. Panzy screams after him, but Neva walks out to the platform, chuckling at Piccolo’s line of questioning, and says he thought he’d just air out the Demon Realm a bit.

As Goku continues his extended free-fall, Neva flies forward to hover over the shield, holds his hand outward, and chants several times: Porutaratto Doddorushii Pupirittoparo. A swirling ball flies upward from Neva, breaking the light shields. Goku finally wakes up mid-fall, and recovers into flight before he crashes down. Piccolo supposes it was Neva who created the light shields all that time ago, which he confirms — he had to do it because the Second Demon World was in chaos, with ruffians coming from the Third World and a bunch of arrogant fools coming from the First World. Peace seemed impossible, and it’s one of the reason Nameks left for the outside world. Neva put the shields in place and Warp-sama was instituted, so eventually travelers decreased and things quieted down. Piccolo says that no Namek could do what Neva did; he truly is legendary. Goku is ready to get going to the First Demon World now! Everyone hops back aboard the plane, and Glorio rushes it down to the open tunnel.

Part B

Degesu senses something like the wind blowing, but Gomah isn’t concerned.

The Special Squad arrive at the palace convenience store, ready to load up on chips. They have trash salt and mold mayonnaise flavors! Koo and Doo run over from a different isle, impressed by the number of chips. The Special Squad brag a bit, saying when you’re as strong as them, you can buy all sorts of snacks. Doo shows off his chocolate, and the squad laughs at how this is all the brats can afford. The Special Squad grab snack after snack off the shelf, and even take Koo’s and Doo’s snacks to go pay up. The total price comes to 10,000 dokuro… which they don’t even remotely have enough to cover. They pay for Koo’s and Doo’s chocolate and walk off, saying kids shouldn’t eat too many snacks anyway. The two wave their new friends farewell!

Arinsu looks out the window as Koo and Doo chow down, watching down over the military police below. She also feels something in the wind… and a sound… could it be that the shield…?

Glorio is unable to slow down, as if the plane is being pulled. Piccolo starts to plan: when they get through, they’ll be in the sky of the First Demon World, so what’s the temperature going to be like? Hybis doesn’t like it when it’s hot. Glorio chimes in, saying the First Demon World has a small, sun-like sphere that orbits around the world, and around this time of day, the sky should be around 60 degrees Celsius. Piccolo figures that’s no problem then; they can just abandon the ship and fly away if it breaks down. Panzy wonders if they’ll really be OK, and Hybis reiterates not liking the heat. Bulma wonders if she’s the only one here who can’t fly, which Hybis takes to mean that now he has to carry her, too? She wasn’t asking him, though; obviously it’s Vegeta that will carry her! Hybis thinks that’s a relief. Glorio opens the door, and everyone hops out to take flight on their own. Bulma wonders if Hybis is going to fight, and if not, to carry the Dragon Balls; Glorio hands Hybis one and takes the other, himself. Everyone makes it out safe (in a controlled free-fall), and it is indeed hot.

A couple military police see a plane crashed down, and then look up to see what looks like the light shield gone from the tunnel… AND people falling! Degesu gets the call, and brings up Goku’s group on the monitor for Gomah to see. Warp-sama was indeed shut down, but the tunnel’s light shield is gone! Gomah screams for the attack to begin!

The military police start firing at the group, forcing them to fly away.

Episode Notes

  • Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 14 overlays the title atop footage.
  • It is impossible to ignore the similarities between Gomah’s reaction to his Military Police Special Force and that of Freeza upon the arrival of the Ginyu Special Force on Namek.

Character & Location Names

  • Military Police Special Force (憲兵特戦隊; kenpei tokusentai)
The “Military Police Special Force” (or “Special Squad”) combines the 憲兵 (kempei) from 憲兵隊 (kempeitai) — the “Military Police” (rendered in the official simulcast English subtitles as “Gendarmerie” pulling on historical, real-life ties between Japanese and German forces) — with 特戦隊 (tokusentai), meaning “special fighting force”. This is obviously the same term used for the Ginyu Special Force, and the wild movements and poses are of course similar to those from the Super Sentai series in Japan, which is what Toriyama pulled from for the Ginyu squad:

But merely escalating the enemies was a pain, so I brought out the Ginyu Special Force. My son really loved sentai stuff, and I always watched it with him. Well, I brought that in. It’s put out by Toei, same as the Dragon Ball Z anime. (laughs)

  • Kademu (カデム; kademu)
Kademu’s name could perhaps come from an anagram of “centipede” in Japanese (百足 or むかで; mukade). Kademu is the “Captain” (隊長; taichō) of the squad. The character’s name is rendered as “Kadem” in the official simulcast English subtitles.

  • Danima (ダニマ; danima)
Danima’s name could perhaps come from an anagram of “tick” in Japanese (マダニ; madani). The character’s name is rendered as “Danima” in the official simulcast English subtitles.

  • Hiria (ヒアリ; Hiria)
Hiria’s name could perhaps come from an anagram of “fire ant” in Japanese (ひあり or ヒアリ; hiari). The character’s name is rendered as “Hillia” in the official simulcast English subtitles. There is also a plant called the “Hillia” (a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae).

  • Mashimu (マシム; mashimu)
Mashimu’s name could perhaps come from an anagram of “pit viper” (or “pit adder” or “Crotalinae”) in Japanese (マムシ; mamushi). The character’s name is rendered as “Mashim” in the official simulcast English subtitles.

  • Gaimoi (ガイモイ; gaimoi)
Gaimoi’s name could perhaps come from an anagram of the “cone snail” or “Conidae” in Japanese (イモガイ; imogai). This would, of course, slightly interfere with the existing Namekian name pun series. The character’s name is rendered as “Gaimoi” in the official simulcast English subtitles.

Translation & Language

  • Neva’s incantation is: ポルタラット ドッドルシー プピリットパロ (Porutaratto Doddorushii Pupirittoparo). There are some obvious similarities and differences compared to other dragon-summoning incantations we have seen in the series before:

It may be the case that “Dorushii” refers to the dragon of the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls, and that swapping Takkaraputo for Porutaratto adapts what occurs; in this case, Neva does not summon a dragon, but opens up the light shield from the connecting tunnels. It should be noted, however, that as of this episode’s premiere, no concrete details regarding a theoretical Demon Realm dragon’s name or function have been formally revealed. The chant is adapted in the official simulcast English subtitles (as it’s been since the beginning with the initial trailers) as: “Portarat Doddorusie Pupilit Paro”

  • The flavor of chips so eagerly sought out in the convenience store — named “Gomart” (ゴマート; gomāto), perhaps short for “Gomah Market”(?) — include “trash salt” (ゴミ塩味; gomi shioaji) and “mold mayonnaise” (カビマヨ; kabimayo).
  • When Kademu brags in front of Koo and Doo in the convenience store, he refers to how strong they are (最強の俺たちレベル; saikyō no ore-tachi reberu). This is adapted as, “When you’re at our power level…” in the official simulcast English subtitles. To be clear, Kademu is not (necessarily) specifically referring to their numerical “battle power” or “combat strength” or “power level” (戦闘力; sentō-ryoku), but just that they are much stronger than others.

Staff & Cast

  • Rikiya Koyama plays Kademu of the Military Police Special Force. Koyama is perhaps best known in Dragon Ball as the “Evil Saiyan” Cumber from the Super Dragon Ball Heroes series of video games (and associated spin-off animation).
  • Atsuki Tani plays Danima of the Military Police Special Force. Tani also plays the kraken in Dragon Ball Daima, and previously played Shito in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
  • Atsushi Imaruoka makes their Dragon Ball debut as Hiria of the Military Police Special Force.
  • Taiki Matsuno posthumously plays Mashimu of the Military Police Special Force. Matsuno has previously played the “Elite”-type Majin character avatars in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series. Matsuno passed away earlier this year.
  • Taketora makes their Dragon Ball debut as Gaimoi of the Military Police Special Force.
  • Masato Sugiyama makes their Dragon Ball debut as the Convenience Store Clerk.
  • Animation artist Naoki Ebihara is incorrectly credited in the ending credits as “海老原樹”, rather than the correct spelling of his name, “海老原樹”. This misspelling has been corrected in the credits listed below.
