Episode Summary

Part A

Goku and the others stare down Arinsu and her two Majin goons. Arinsu attempts to introduce herself, but Koo jumps in first. Arinsu continues, including the fact that she is a Glind. Doo (who loves chocolate cookies) rounds out the bunch. Glorio wonders to himself what this all means. Bulma calls out that these two look like Majin Boo, and Goku notices their one Dragon Ball. Koo chuckles, and explains that Doo is the one who defeated the Tamagami to win it; personally, he lost! Goku wonders why he’s acting so proud about this fact.

Kaiōshin walks forward and says hello to his sister, who greets little Nahare. His size is due to Gomah wishing them all into children, which Arinsu figures is why they’re here — to get the Dragon Balls and wish themselves back to normal. Kaiōshin asks for the Dragon Ball as Doo runs off after a butterfly, but Arinsu of course tells him that this is not possible — she has a wish of her own, which is to become the Demon King! Degesu had the same ambition, but Arinsu says not to compare her to him; Degesu had no real vision, unlike her, who wants an even more terrifying Demon Realm that the outside world bows down to. Kaiōshin thinks it’s a shame she doesn’t use her ambition and power for peace; Arinsu thinks that’s disgusting.

Vegeta chimes in, but is once again shut down as being some small little arrogant guy from the outside world. Arinsu has a proposal: her Majin will fight one-on-one against an individual from their side, and the winner gets to claim all three Dragon Balls. Piccolo thinks this is a little off considering they have two as opposed to Arinsu’s one, but she says she’ll destroy her Dragon Ball if they don’t accept her terms. Goku thinks this plan is fine, and is ready to fight. Piccolo says they seem pretty confident, but Goku is likewise ready for this. Vegeta butts in again demanding to at least do rock-paper-scissors to decide who goes next, but Goku insists that Vegeta just fought the Tamagami, so it’s his turn now. Bulma eventually intervenes, saying it’s Goku’s turn, and if Vegeta is an adult, to just let him have this. Goku walks up ready to fight; Koo passes the Dragon Ball to Arinsu and runs after him… but he’s not fighting! “Pretty strong” won’t cut it here; it’s Doo’s fight.

Goku strikes a pose. Doo blows off some steam and rushes in. Goku manages to dodge all of Doo’s punches and gets in a few hits of his own, but Doo’s stretchy arms start pushing him back, forcing him to take out Nyoibō. Goku keeps pushing him back, but Doo is eventually able to grab Goku from below and twirl him around. The two run along the outskirts and charge back in, and Doo catches Goku with his antennae. Goku is able to fling himself back and transforms into a Super Saiyan, pushing Doo to retaliate with more intensity. The two trade blasts and grapple for a bit as everyone else watches on.

A giant hand suddenly pulls itself up; Gomah is here, and he tosses a blast of his own to interrupt Goku and Doo. Gomah then pounces down below in front of the group.

Part B

Gomah apologizes for the interruption, but he was wondering what all the commotion was out here! This is Goku’s first introduction to King Gomah. Arinsu and Neva notice the Third Eye. Panzy asks what this is, so Neva explains that whoever claims and wears this eye is granted incredible power; even he seems somewhat shook at this development. Glorio comments that the eye was supposedly lost back during Abra’s reign. Hybis looks up and mutters. Gomah thanks everyone for the explanation, which should help them all understand just how much of a threat he is now. Bulma comments that the eye looks similar to Hybis’ belt… but where is it? Eh, one eyeball is as good as any other.

Goku wants to know if Gomah plans on fighting them. Of course this is the plan; he wants to try out this power, after all! Gomah says he will prepare a special ring for them to fight in, and flings magic off into the sky, which collects a bunch of glowing rocks together, eventually forming into a pillared, floating platform.

Vegeta flies in to attack, but Gomah is able to stop him at the last second with just the flick of a single finger. Gomah is fast even at his size, and lands a punch to send Vegeta flying. Unfortunately he’s breaking his own castle in the process of fighting, and pleas for Vegeta to stop firing attacks. Gomah clothelines Vegeta, forcing him to transform into a Super Saiyan. Even with this strength Vegeta is no match for Gomah, who flings him away once more.

Goku calls for everyone to fight; Piccolo, Kaiōshin, and Glorio all follow him. Bulma remarks that it’s not like Goku to suggest everyone fight all at once like this, and Neva comments that the enemy they’re facing right now is just that overwhelming. Goku (now also Super Saiyan) and the others start attacking in tandem, but Gomah blocks everything thrown his way. Goku and the others get knocked away yet again, and Bulma yells at Arinsu and the Majin to go help. Arinsu ponders for a second as she watches the mayhem, and then agrees: Koo and Doo need to go fight. Doo thanks her, and the two fly off. Kadan and his army also fly off, with the Amazoness grabbing Bulma along the way.

Neva slides his way back to Tamagami Number One, who is otherwise just watching. Neva keeps winking at him, then gestures up toward the fight. The Tamagami still isn’t getting it, so Neva sends some sort of magical signal his way… which finally gets the point across.

Doo distracts Gomah with a stretchy arm hold, while the others rush back in with their own attacks. Despite the hold, Gomah uses the surrounding rocks to knock everyone away before they connect… but he didn’t see a blast coming from Tamagami Number One! At the very last moment before the blast hits, Gomah is able to deflect it with the power of the Third Eye.

Gomah uses his power to break apart the land and send it flying toward all the fighters. None of the attacks, even when they land, manage to faze Gomah in the least. Doo stretches himself around Gomah and Goku lands a solid punch, but just as everyone else reaches him, Gomah simply knocks them all away.

Goku and the others all start to charge up their signature attacks, which Gomah welcomes head on, tossing out a barrier that negates them all. As he falls away, Vegeta asks about those bugs Goku had, but the bag seems to be missing! Goku is then telekinetically frozen by Gomah, who throws a giant blast his way. Right before it can hit, Tamagami Number One and Doo arrive to hold it back. Goku figures he has no choice, and starts to power up even further — his hair starts to grow longer, and lightning surrounds him. Gomah’s blast hits Goku, but he tanks it completely… now as Super Saiyan 3.

“Awakening”

Episode Notes

  • Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 17 overlays the title atop footage.
  • As opposed to the most recent batch of episodes, there is no standard eyecatch animation featured between commercial breaks in episode 17 — like earlier episodes, the Daima logo is simply superimposed down in the corner.

Translation & Language

  • As they have done since the beginning, the official simulcast English subtitles refer to the item as the “Third Eye” when the Japanese spoken aloud is サードアイ (sādo ai meaning and using the English words “Third Eye”), while instead using a fabricated, Latin-esque “Tertian Oculus” when spoken aloud as 第3の目 (dai san no me meaning “Third Eye” in Japanese). This continues to be in contrast with the original “Tertiary Oculus” phrase as used in the first episode.
  • When snapping back at Vegeta, Arinsu refers to 外の世界 (soto no sekai) for “the outside world” (in line with how it has been used thus far in the series), while the “lower being” that she refers to Vegeta as is 下等生物 (katō seibutsu).

Staff & Cast

  • A new member of King Kadan’s army is credited this episode: a “Lizard Soldier” played by Ryō Yaginuma, who has previously played various military police and demons throughout the show, and was just credited as a “Horned Goblin” in Kadan’s army two episodes ago. Beyond Kadan himself and the Amazoness, however, none of these other Kadan Army members seem to actually say anything during this episode (unless they potentially mutter something as a group).

All credits listed below are presented as they originally appeared in the episode’s initial Japanese broadcast and international simulcast, although any errors have been corrected to maintain accurate and consistent spellings throughout the site.
