Episode Summary

Part A

Goku steps up, ready to take on Gomah — now as an adult, but in the same red, furry form as before during his bout as a child. With a huge burst of power, Goku rushes in and lands a punch square to Gomah’s face, following through and pushing him to the ground. Gomah retaliates with Evil Eye energy, and the physical bout begins anew. Each lands their own set of hits, throwing energy blasts into the mix along the way. Whenever it seems that Goku has the upper hand, the Evil Eye reacts and brings Gomah right back into the mix. Gomah then tosses energy into the sky, and his magic staff creates a whirlwind of energy balls surrounding Goku, who responds with precision to bat them away and get back in to Gomah’s face. Goku powers up (and bulks up) yet again, but even another square blow to Gomah’s gut is not enough to deal with the reactions of the Evil Eye.

Goku pauses, chuckles to himself, and gets back to it. Gomah uses his powers to telekinetically throw pillars at Goku, who likewise keeps trying to get solid blows to the face and gut. Gomah pushes Goku down into the arena and surrounds him again with energy balls that themselves also fire individual blasts. The two break out back to the sky and punch away at each other. A face punch delivered by Goku turns into a drag through a mountain, but Gomah keeps getting up.

Goku unleashes an aura of power all around him, hunches forward, and lets it loose, standing with confidence in the resulting silence. Goku cups his hands together, and begins to form and vocalize a Kamehameha. Gomah creates a massive purple ball to meet it. The two blasts meet midway, and at first it seems that Gomah is unable to handle it. Goku pushes more energy into his blast, but the Evil Eye is up to the challenge… or so it seems. The blast overwhelms Gomah, piercing him straight through the chest, and pushes up through the layers of the Demon Realm. Water from the Second World begins to flow down to the First through the resulting craters. Gomah stares at the gaping hole in his chest.

Part B

Piccolo takes the opportunity to get his three hits against the back of Gomah’s head, but only makes it to two before Gomah retaliates with a backward hand slap. The Evil Eye vibrates around; Gomah has figured out their plan!

Arinsu wonders if there could be more information in the magic book, which Koo is still holding onto as he dodges around. Goku and the others all jump in against Gomah now, who has electrified the arena. Gomah’s gaping hole heals itself up, and everything starts anew as if no progress had been made. Koo falls out of the sky from the resulting wind and lightning, but finds himself heading straight toward the back of Gomah’s head. With the giant magic book, he slams Gomah three times in a row… popping the Evil Eye out of Gomah’s head entirely! The pillars around the arena immedaitely crumble, and Gomah starts to shrink back down to normal size.

The Evil Eye rolls to the side in front of Glorio… who stomps down on it with an anticlimactic “pop” as it fizzles into nothingness.

Everyone breaths a sigh of relief, and Panzy gives Glorio a thumbs-up as Koo poses with self-satisfaction in the background. Glorio and Panzy exchange looks with each other, and Koo wonders why it is that he can’t be the one to finish things… but everyone crowds around to cheer for him on a job well done! Even Arinsu gives him a reluctant elbow jab. Goku says that it all worked out!

Part C

Gomah is all wrapped up, and Neva comments on his short rule. Gomah thought Neva was supposed to be senile this whole time! Arinsu and Marba swoop in, ready to trap Gomah in a special urn for the next hundred years as punishment. Piccolo notes that Gomah didn’t actually try to kill Dende, so they should make the punishment just 99 years, instead. Arinsu swirls some smoke around to bring out Degesu, who she says should be included so Gomah has company. Marba uncorcks the the urn, and a swirling burst of wind drags Gomah and Degesu inside. Marba says it’s actually quite nice inside, with a small garden and all sorts of games to play.

With Gomah and Degesu out of the picture, Arinsu wonders who will take the now-empty role of Demon King…? Kaiōshin wonders back if she will take it, since she ranks higher than any of her rivals, and she seems to still have a sliver of a conscience. Arinsu is slightly repelled by this, saying her ambitions have not changed — Neva repeats back that it was to create a terrifying Demon Realm that rivaled the outside world — but Arinsu refuses, since if she becomes Demon King without any additional magic power from the Dragon Balls, she’ll just be a target and overthrown. Neva chimes in again saying that the one who defeats the Demon King is first in line to succeed them… and suddenly all eyes shift to Koo! He’ll do it — he’ll become the new Demon King! Koo sprouts a magical cape, and says he chooses Arinsu to be his Vice Demon King! He’s a good judge of character, after all — she may be ambitious, but at her heart, she’s not all bad. Majin Doo will be a minister! Marba and Neva will also be ministers because of their knowledge, skill, and magic power as it relates to the Demon Realm! Glorio will also be a minster for his good judgement and heart! King Kadan will be another minister, due to his courage to come fight! Kadan is surprised, since he’s just from the Third Demon World, and has never heard of anything like that. Koo says he’ll be the first minister from the Third Demon World, then! Koo says everyone from the outside world has done so well; is there anyone who wants to be a minister? Goku raises a hand, but says they’re going home. Undeterred, Koo turns around and extends more minister appointment invitations. Hybis raises his hand over and over, but Koo says that the assignments are done. Neva wonders if Koo might actually be good at his new job. Koo extends a hand to Arinsu, asking her to help work to make the Demon realm a scary-yet-good place to live! Piccolo has no objections to King Koo.

Later on, Panzy presents a bunch of Majilite to Bulma; she took it all from the warehouse at Gomah’s castle. Koo prepares a giant batch of chocolate cookies for everyone, but Kaiōshin explains that he can’t eat these.

Vegeta goes at it a bit with Goku, saying he still could have eventually won. Furthermore, Goku was keeping that transformation a secret! Goku says that he wasn’t sure if it — Super Saiyan 4 — would work. Vegeta says that it’s like a Super Saiyan bargain sale. Goku quips back that Vegeta turned Super Saiyan 3 as well, though, but Vegeta stammers and says it’s called Ultra Vegeta 1!

Neva asks Dende if he’s considered coming to live here, but Dende has his duties back on Earth. Piccolo remarks the same. Dende says that he will, however, ask the Namekians who lost Planet Namek and have been reduced to nomads, who may welcome the idea. Neva says he’ll stay here and look forward to it.

Panzy tells Goku that they’re all packed and ready to go. Kadan notes that, since the tunnel is open, wind is pushing the gas up, making the air lighter here. These folks from the outside world really helped them out! Glorio preps the plane, and Goku and the others depart back for the Third Demon World. Koo yells for them to come save everyone if things get hairy again!

Post-Credits

As Glorio flies the plane and Panzy munches on a bag of chips, Goku asks if they can make a stop back at the place where they previously bought the Medi Bugs. They’ve been running low on Senzu, so he’d like to buy some of those Revive Bugs. Meanwhile, Bulma examines her back-to-adult skin condition.

The Rest Stop Lady is reading a newspaper with a story on Koo and Doo, which she puts down to welcome this group of shoppers. She recognizes Goku as the kid who bought Medi Bugs the other day; he’s grown so much since then, but was it a result of the Medi Bugs? Bulma begins to check out what looks like green jewels, but throws one back in disgust when she flips it over to see the bug parts. The Rest Stop Lady laughs and says they do actually work, though! There’s the ones that heal burns, smooth out your skin… Bulma is suddenly interested again in this one that de-ages your skin ten years. She’ll take them all!

Panzy looks around some more, and ends up around a corner… only to discover a dusty jar that has what look like two more eyes in it! The Rest Stop Lady says they’re Evil Third Eyes that give you tremendous strength when you place one in your forehead. She used to have three of them, but they’re pricey and look suspicious, so she’s only managed to sell one, a long time ago. If they want one, she’ll give them a discount! One of the eyes turns in the jar to look at everyone as they scream in surprise.

“The End”

Episode Notes

Episode Structure

  • This final episode of Dragon Ball Daima sports no traditional opening theme sequence, instead using a reprise of the opening theme for its ending credits music (itself replacing the standard usage of “NAKAMA” and its respective animation sequence).
  • Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 20 overlays the title atop footage.
  • As done with some previous episodes, no eyecatch animation or jingle is used to indicate the commercial break. As each part of the episode concludes and prepares to cut to the commercial break, the Dragon Ball Daima series logo appears in the lower left corner. When the episode returns from commercial break, the logo remains visible before fading away.
  • With no standard episode theme, episode 20 actually breaks the structure into three distinct parts with eyecatches between them, as well as its own post-credits sequence beyond that (ultimately making for four total, separate “parts”).

Past Content Allusions

  • Gomah and Degesu getting trapped in the urn here in the Demon Realm feels like a clear and obvious allusion to attempting to trap Demon King Piccolo (himself a “demon” after all!) in the rice cooker via the Mafūba.

  • Super Saiyan 4 — originally designed by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru for the 1996-1997 television series Dragon Ball GT — returns with a redesign from the previous episode, now in adult form (compared to the “Mini” version from two episodes ago). Unlike the last two episodes, it is later actually referred to by Goku as “Super Saiyan 4” directly by name.

That said, the form’s name was confirmed as “Super Saiyan 4” — specifically for “Super Saiyan 4 Son Goku (Mini) -DAIMA- — through S.H.Figuarts announcements prior to this episode’s debut.

  • While any given Kamehameha can often look similar to another one based solely on the necessary posing to use the attack, the specific framing and illustrated style of Goku’s Kamehameha here in episode 20 seems reminiscent of the image Akira Toriyama drew for the cover of Weekly Shōnen Jump‘s 1991 No. 37 issue:

  • Gomah being pierced through the chest with a resulting hole brings to mind Goku’s final attack against Demon King Piccolo:

  • Vegeta referring to Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 transformation as a kind of “Super Saiyan bargain sale” is a direct nod back to his usage of this same phrase in Dragon Ball manga chapter 429 (and Dragon Ball Z episode 207).

Toriyama addressed this line in his “Twel-Boo Mysterious” Q&A for Saikyō Jump in 2014, where in response to a question about whether or not Vegeta has actually been to a bargain sale, he stated:

As you might expect, he’s never actually been to a bargain sale. Bulma’s super rich after all, so I don’t think there’d be any need for them to go. Most likely he just learned about them from TV news or commercials he happened to watch.

Translation & Language

  • After Panzy and Glorio look at him in a questioning way, Koo states: オレがきめたっていいだろ! (Ore ga kime tatte ii daro!), asking along the lines of why it can’t be him specifically that’s the one to finish things off (as in deal the final blow to Gomah). This is adapted in the official simulcast English subtitles simply as “Why can’t I finish things?”
  • Koo says that Arinsu can be his “Vice Demon King” (副大魔王; fuku daimaō), the exact same way Gomah was described in reference to Dabra back in episode 15.
  • Koo goes on to assign a bunch of “Minister” (大臣; daijin) positions to his comrades.
  • Goku finally refers to “Super Saiyan 4” (超サイヤ人4; sūpā saiya-jin fō) directly by name. This is spoken exactly as it was done for its original version in the Dragon Ball GT television series, with the number “four” being spoken aloud in English.
  • When Vegeta challenges Goku on the new Super Saiyan 4 transformation, Goku responds: うまくいくかどうか自信なかったけどな (Umaku iku ka dō ka jishin nakatta kedo na). A fairly literal translation of this would be, “I wasn’t sure if it would work out [successfully] or not, though.” The implication here is that it would probably work to some degree (as in it would actually happen/start/occur at bare minimum), but not necessarily hold/take/endure for the long haul. This sentence is rendered in the official simulcast English subtitles as: “I wasn’t sure if it would work, though.”
  • In response to Goku remarking that even Vegeta turned “3” (スリー; surii), Vegeta stammers and fabricates the name “Ultra Vegeta 1” (ウルトラベジータ1号; urutora bejiita ichi-gō) for his otherwise-standard Super Saiyan 3 transformation.
  • Dende refers to a bunch of “nomads” (流浪の旅; rurōnotabi) who lost Planet Namek. This, however, begs the question: who exactly is he talking about here, since New Planet Namek was already long-since created and in use? This is where Dende was brought from to be Earth’s God, after all! There is Monaito over on Planet Cereal in the Dragon Ball Super manga… but, continuity and timeline aside on that one, who else is being referred to that Dende would know and is directly referring to here, anyway?!
