Episode Synopsis
Vegeta and Nappa emerge from the two space pods and Nappa wipes out East City with a single blast. They then fly off towards the island where Piccolo and Gohan are in search of the Dragon Balls. Kuririn arrives first, and the three face off with Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo learns for the first time that he is a Namekian when he is told so by Nappa! At Vegeta’s order, Nappa plants seeds in the ground, and from them six ferocious Saibaimen are born!! Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu, and then Yamcha fly in to join in the battle. Vegeta suggests they have a game of one-on-one, and Tenshinhan faces off against a Saibaiman first. The Saibaiman shoots acid from his head, but he is soon defeated by Tenshinhan and because of this he is annihilated by Vegeta! Next, Yamcha fights in place of Kuririn, and the Saibaiman he defeats latches onto him and self-destructs, infuriating Kuririn!

Episode Notes
- For the first time in the series, re-animated scenes are shown in the next episode preview. However, an unfortunate animation error made its way into the broadcast episode. It is presumed that staff were editing this shot just prior to exporting the footage, but they forgot to turn one of the animation layers back on (as visible) in their editing software. As Tenshinhan fires his Kikōhō, the ki flashes around his hand, and it is clearly visible by the checker-box effect that the layer which is supposed to be flashing has been temporarily turned off. This error was later corrected in the home video release, as shown on the right of this comparison image, and was also corrected in the scene’s actual appearance in the following episode.
- While the original broadcast of this episode featured Kenji Yamamoto’s musical score, the background music in all subsequent re-airings have been replaced by Shunsuke Kikuchi’s original musical score from Dragon Ball Z due to allegations of musical infringement. The credits below reflect those from the original broadcast in which Kenji Yamamoto is credited as the series’ musical composer, although Shunsuke Kikuchi is credited as such in all subsequent re-airings and home video releases featuring his replacement score.
Re-animated Scene Gallery
This collection compiles all re-animated scenes featured in this episode’s original broadcast, listed in order of appearance. Each re-animated scene will be presented with a screen shot from the original Dragon Ball Z TV series (left) and another taken from the Dragon Ball Kai TV broadcast (right). In Japan, Dragon Ball Kai was broadcast in widescreen, so these comparisons will maintain this proper aspect ratio. All original comparison screen shots were taken from the Japanese Dragon Boxes and maintain their proper 4:3 aspect ratios. It should be noted that some of these re-animated scenes only appear in the widescreen presentation of the series and were possibly omitted from fullscreen releases, both domestically and internationally.
