Episode Synopsis

Gohan collapses, having used up all of his power, and a satisfied look spreads over his face. Yamcha and the others carry him to Dende’s. Having lost his rival Goku, Vegeta flies off alone. Left in the desert, Satan announces to the television staff that he defeated Cell. Trunks and No. 18 are carried to the Heavenly Realm, and Shenlong is summoned. Shenlong restores all those killed by Cell to life, but from the afterlife Goku tells everyone that he’s fine being dead. With the second wish, Kuririn has the bomb inside No. 18’s body removed. Learning of his kind heart, No. 18 says “see you later”, and flies off. Kuririn and the others part with Piccolo and leave the Heavenly Realm behind. Chi-Chi collapses in tears when she hears about Goku from Gohan. Everyone later reunites to see Trunks off as he returns to the future.

Episode Notes

  • This episode was originally scheduled to air on Sunday, 20 March 2011 at 9:00AM on Fuji TV. However, due to the news coverage of the horrific earthquake that hit Japan on 11 March 2001, the broadcast of this episode was pushed back one week. Due to this, broadcast of the 98th, and final, episode of the first phase of the series was canceled and is only viewable in Japan through home video releases.
  • As this was the last episode of the first phase of the Dragon Ball Kai broadcast on Fuji TV, the next episode preview for the final episode was replaced by the next episode preview for the first episode of the subsequent series, Toriko. The next episode preview for the 98th episode of Dragon Ball Kai was later included on the home video releases.
  • While this episode was originally intended to feature Kenji Yamamoto’s musical score, the background music was replaced prior to its initial broadcast with Shunsuke Kikuchi’s original score from Dragon Ball Z due to allegations of musical infringement. Therefore this episode is only available with Shunsuke Kikuchi’s original score, in both the original broadcast and home video releases.
  • Fuji TV publicist Tomoko Kumagai was incorrectly credited in the ending credits as “熊谷子”, rather than her actual name, “熊谷子”. This error was eventually noticed and publicly addressed by Toei Animation in an “Apology and Correction” note included with the “Artificial Human & Cell arc” box sets released in January 2015. However, the error was not actually corrected in these releases and still appears in all Blu-ray and DVD home video sets, in addition to the episode’s original broadcast.

Re-animated Scene Gallery

This collection compiles all re-animated scenes featured in this episode’s original broadcast, listed in order of appearance. Each re-animated scene will be presented with a screen shot from the original Dragon Ball Z TV series (left) and another taken from the Dragon Ball Kai TV broadcast (right). In Japan, Dragon Ball Kai was broadcast in widescreen, so these comparisons will maintain this proper aspect ratio. All original comparison screen shots were taken from the Japanese Dragon Boxes and maintain their proper 4:3 aspect ratios. It should be noted that some of these re-animated scenes only appear in the widescreen presentation of the series and were possibly omitted from fullscreen releases, both domestically and internationally.
