Episode Summary

Part A

Goku is out ploughing the fields by firing ki blasts, while Chi-Chi, Gohan, and Goten watch from the side. Chi-Chi explains that Goku was wanting to train, and since the tractor is broken, this way they can kill two birds with one stone. But Goku still wants someone to spar against, so that is why Chi-Chi brought Gohan. It turns out that Beerus and Whis are heading off to a joint conference of Kaiōshin and Gods of Destruction and cannot train Goku right now.

Gohan wants to spar a bit, but Vegeta is looking extra mean today, and Piccolo is helping Dende. Gohan thinks he and Goten could spar instead, but Chi-Chi is adamant Gohan handle this himself. Though at first reluctant to challenge Goku, Gohan realizes he can do it… as the Great Saiyaman! Using his transformation watch to get into his costume, he goes into a standard Great Saiyaman speech, though Goku is not fooled as to Saiyaman’s true identity.

The two begin fighting, and before long both power up into their Super Saiyan forms. Gohan gives Goku a pretty good fight… too good, in fact. Their battle ends up devastating the field, and Chi-Chi angrily tells them to fight somewhere else.

Later on at the Son household, Chi-Chi again warns Goku not to fight out in the fields anymore. Goku still wants a sparring partner though, and Goten suggests Kuririn. While Chi-Chi says Kuririn is far too busy with his policeman job for that, Goku dashes off to see him.

Meanwhile, Kuririn is involved in a police shootout with some bank robbers, and his arm gets grazed by a bullet while shielding one of his fellow officers. Goku flies in and quickly apprehends the crooks once he learns the situation. He tells Kuririn he wants to train, and while he is worried about the wound on Kuririn’s arm, Kuririn assures him it is nothing.

Back at Kuririn’s house, Kuririn protests that he will not make a good training partner for Goku. He has given up martial arts and is just a cop now. But No. 18 chews him out for being so weak-spirited. She cannot believe he got hurt by an ordinary bullet! Even Marron wonders if her father is weak. Kuririn caves under all this pressure and goes to train with Goku.

The two of them soon decide that if they are going to train together again, they might as well go do it under the Turtle Hermit, just like old times. Kuririn changes into his old Turtle School uniform, but warns Goku that he is not actually becoming a full-fledged martial artist again. He just wants to get back in shape; in his line of work he cannot be getting hurt by bullets, after all!

Part B

At Kame House, Kuririn asks Roshi to retrain him, and presents him with a dirty mag (just like old times). When Goku does not likewise offer a proper greeting, Roshi hits him. Like Kuririn, Roshi does not think he would make a good sparring partner for Goku, but decides to help Kuririn fight Goku.

Outside on the beach, Roshi has Goku wear a heavy turtle costume as he spars with Kuririn. He is not allowed to fly or go Super Saiyan either. Regardless, Goku has no trouble dodging Kuririn’s attacks, and just as heis about to strike Roshi stops their match. Kuririn is worn out while Goku seems fine, yet Goku cheerfully says their fight was great training.

That night while Goku sleeps at Kame House, Kuririn stands out on the beach practicing his moves. He soon stops though, and Roshi appears, saying he seems conflicted. Roshi says that while Kuririn wants to move forward he is unsure how to go about it, and Kuririn explains that he wants to be strong for No. 18 and Marron.

The next morning, Roshi announces that today’s training is to run an errand for him. Now that he is old, he needs a special herb to keep his strength up, something not sold in stores: Paradise Grass. It grows deep in a forest on an island somewhere, and the first one to bring some back gets Roshi’s prized photo collection (another dirty book, naturally). Goku and Kuririn are not too interested in that though, so Roshi also mentions a certain technique to instantly power up one’s ki that he could teach them.

Goku and Kuririn soon arrive on the island, but once inside the forest they have no clue where to go next. Fortunately, Uranai Baba appears. Roshi sent her to act as referee, watching their competition via her crystal ball. She tells them the Paradise Grass is up ahead, and the two set off running. They soon come to a giant stone gate shaped like a demon’s open mouth. Baba tells them that inside is where the real challenge begins.

Through the gate is an even creepier part of the forest, filled with leafless trees. Kuririn is suddenly plagued by visions of the police shootout and No. 18 calling him weak. Multiple moons appear in the sky, and a heavy fog rolls up. Out of the fog materialize giant phantoms of Cell, Freeza, Nappa… and all sorts of enemies Goku and Kuririn have faced in the past!
