Episode Summary

Part A

The gods from the four universes exempt from the Tournament of Power arrive at the newly-completed tournament arena. As they wonder if it will be able to stay intact throughout the entire tournament, the Great Priest welcomes them and notes that the Omni-Kings are relaxing until the contestants arrive. In response to the gods’ worries, the Great Priest explains that the arena is made from “Kachi-Katchin Steel”, an even harder material than Universe 7’s Katchin Steel.

The Great Priest goes on to suggest that they test the arena out a bit before the main event, in order to keep the Omni-Kings from getting bored. Following this, Liquir, Arak, and Iwen — the Gods of Destruction for Universe 8, Universe 5, and Universe 1, respectively — begin a sparring match with the same rules as the main tournament. Liquir considers this a perfect opportunity to demonstrate how their universes are superior to the ones having to participate in the tournament, while Giin, the God of Destruction for Universe 12, bows out, saying that he already knows how things will turn out.

The three-way match begins, but before long the arena is in ruins. Calling the match off, the Great Priest thanks the participants for demonstrating how the arena needed to be improved… and leaves them with the job of fixing it up before the tournament begins. Sadly, the Omni-Kings were asleep and so failed to witness any of the fight.

On Earth, the mood is tense as Freeza meets up with the rest of the Universe 7 team at Capsule Corporation. Beerus warns Freeza that he won’t let him get away with any shenanigans. Vegeta mocks Freeza’s halo, but Freeza offers to give him one of his own.

Tenshinhan wonders if they can really use Freeza as a team member, but Goku assures him he can keep Freeza in check. Besides, there’s nobody else they can use in Boo’s place… Hiding off to the side, Yamcha, Pu’er, and Oolong eavesdrop on the conversation. Pu’er consoles Yamcha for not being selected for the team, but he seems to take it in stride.

Shin wants to talk strategy, but Vegeta insists that all they need to do is simply take out any strong-looking guys first. Freeza agrees with Vegeta, but Gohan maintains the importance of teamwork, and Piccolo points out that if they lose, it will mean the end of their universe… including Trunks and Bra. Vegeta becomes a bit more cooperative, but still doesn’t like Shin’s idea that they focus on ganging up on enemies—fighting two against one, three against two, etc., and Goku likewise thinks that sounds dirty. With Goku and Vegeta’s Saiyan natures getting the best of them, Gohan and Piccolo realize it will be up to them to promote teamwork.

Whis announces that it’s time to depart, and that to teleport to the arena everyone will need to hold hands. Vegeta balks at the thought of holding hands with Freeza, but Beerus steps in and holds Freeza’s hand so he won’t have to. Whis contacts the Great Priest, who teleports the team to the World of Void. Watching the team depart, Yamcha reflects that the fate of the Earth and their entire universe is in their hands. Bulma wishes them luck, and reminds them that everyone is counting on them.

Part B

The team arrives in the World of Void to find Liquir and co. putting the finishing touches on their repair job of the arena. Teams from other universes begin arriving, and Beerus notices they are not holding hands. It turns out the hand-holding wasn’t actually necessary to teleport, it was just Whis’ way of trying to build team bonds (though it almost backfired).

No. 18 notices how the arena floats in a void — hence the name — and Whis explains that contestants are prevented from using flying techniques like Bukūjutsu. However, contestants with wings are still allowed to fly, as are non-contestants. In addition, each contestant will still experience the same gravity as on their native planet.

The gods take off to watch from afar, and the Universe 6 fighters come greet those from Universe 7. Frost and Freeza are pleased to meet each other, while Cabba happily introduces Caulifla and Kale to “Master” Vegeta. Goku is interested to meet female Saiyans, though Caulifla clearly has not come to make friends. Off to the side Kuririn wonders if the Turtle Hermit will be able to handle fighting women, but he assures him he’s fine.

Sidra and Rou aren’t happy to see the Universe 7 team, but Rou thinks they’ll just have to leave things to their own warriors now. Off on their own, Freeza and Frost compare notes: they both like to rule by force, and seem to get along great. Perhaps they should team up…

Meanwhile, the Universe 11 team arrives, and Goku and Vegeta are shocked by their ki (Caulifla seems less impressed, both with the Universe 11 team and the Universe 7 Saiyans for being so impressed). Goku rushes up to greet Toppo and says they can settle their score from last time, but Toppo isn’t interested in any personal rivalry; he is here to save his universe! Goku next spots Jiren, but Jiren is even less friendly: he seems to instantly warp behind Goku’s back, and coldly tells him to “get lost”.

Seeing that all the warriors have arrived, Liquir and co. pick up the pace and telekinetically zip the remaining arena blocks back into place. Warriors frantically dodge out of the way of these flying blocks, including Goku when they approach him and Jiren… but Jiren himself remains perfectly still, and the blocks pass right by him. Goku realizes that Jiren was able to perfectly read the blocks’ movements ahead of time. He really is awesome!

With the arena repairs done, the Great Priest introduces the teams. First there’s the Universe 2 team, with the highest proportion of female fighters… plus Goku spots a Yardratian, a member of the race that taught him teleportation. Next is the Universe 3 team, consisting of many cybernetic warriors. The Universe 4 team seems to have only eight members, but Tenshinhan can faintly sense the remaining two.

The Universe 6 team features the five members from the last tournament, plus Caulifla, Kale, Dr. Rota, and two shadowy figures. The Universe 7 team contains the usual suspects, plus Freeza. The Universe 9 team has the Trio de Dangers and seven additional members. The Universe 10 team features a whole bunch of beefy guys, plus a bird and butterfly fighter. And the Universe 11 team consists entirely of Pride Troopers: Toppo, Jiren, Dispo, and the rest of the crew.

Seeing all these formidable foes, Gohan once again stresses the need for teamwork, but Vegeta just seems annoyed, and Freeza not that interested. The Great Priest introduces the Omni-Kings, who briefly thank all the contestants for coming. Finally, the 48-minute Tournament of Power can begin!
