Re: Do you enjoy Complaining about/Discussing/Watching edited versions of DB?

it just sounds so goofy and sometimes it's like strangely really menacing ? it's weird. Yeah the aggressive menace is definitely what sticks out in my memory the most along with the heroic "Goku arrives" track mentioned above. While the Saban-era music was higher quality and felt far more professio...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

Getting back to the original topic at hand, the Ocean dub is largely just a curiosity for me. I got into the series around the time that the redub starting to get going with the in-house cast, and my only exposure to the Ocean cast was the Over 9,000 meme and finding the odd old dub episode on YouT...

Would it be correct to say that the old Funi singles were an honest representation of what the show looks like?

Over the years, I've seen people say that these releases had the saturation levels increased, and sharpening filters applied. Of course, the Pioneer era singles from the late 90s also had all of the pre-existing syndication edits. But, when I compare the singles to Funimation's subsequent releases, ...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

It's hard to pinpoint where the Pioneer dub would fit in all of this though. As far as I know the three movies were dubbed in 1997. I believe Dead Zone got a winter release and World’s Strongest and Tree of Might were released in spring of 1998. I know Sleeping Princess came out in 1998, but I beli...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

Perhaps Funimation felt comfortable enough after the first season’s relatively good ratings that they wouldn’t be getting the axe and anticipated a season 3 when they started season 2. https://variety.com/1996/scene/vpage/saban-to-sell-new-kangaroo-x-men-1117466224/ This article from December 1996 ...

A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

What was your reaction? Most people who disparage that dub on YouTube seem to be the types who were first exposed to the Orange Brick redub of the first two seasons. I only saw a few episodes of it prior to 2005, when they were the only game in town, so I would barely count as someone who grew up on...

Re: How many series exist for you?

I can understand Faulconer (although since Funi broke up with Faulconer I'm not sure what the money situation is there) and especially Johnson and Menza... but Wasserman was Saban's thing. Are you sure Funi was making money off the Wasserman score instead of Saban? Wasserman actually did DBZ as a f...

Re: How many series exist for you?

I think you could make the argument that GT is also the same series as DB/Z. Although it had no Manga equivalent, it was produced immediately after Z ended with the largely same staff as the previous anime, and was part of the original 1986-1997 broadcast. I know some will say it isn't because of h...

Re: The Trimark (BLT) Dub of Dragon Ball

And I know the Saban era actually finished production in 1997 but compounded with their “test dub” of Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle it just seemed like Funimation was moving independently away from Saban and Ocean. I always suspected this. If you check the credits of the episodes that aired i...

Re: FUNi Kai dub with the Ocean Dub / Westwood Dub music?

Unfortunately there just isn't enough of the Ocean soundtrack released to attempt such a thing. The so called OST of the Mega Man cartoon is just a bunch of vocal songs. Not to mention how low quality the online uploads of the Westwood dub are. As for ripping the songs out of the Saban dub or the M...

Re: Bruce Faulconer returning to compose the score for DBS?

Anime dubbing as a whole has moved past replacement scores. Literally the only example I can think of that still regularly does it is Pokémon, and even there, the latest movie kept everything except the ending theme song intact. I see absolutely no reason why FUNi would go back to changing the musi...

Re: Is the tv edit of Tree of Might available outside Rock the Dragon

I think its sad no recordings exist of the T.O.M dub as it originally aired in November 1997, sliced into three TV episodes. It might be the only thing FUNi and Ocean have done that doesn't exist in any capacity on the internet. I mean, even all the Westwood and Blue Water era stuff that only ever a...

Re: FUNimation and their use of the term "Season"

To quote an old thread here, the actual seasons for the show in America were as follows: Season 1 (1996-1997) Saiyan Arc - 1-26 (1-35) Season 2 (1997-1998) Namek Arc - 27-53 (36-67) Season 3 (1999) Ginyu/Freeza Arc - 54-92 (68-107) Season x (Early 2000) Garlic Jr Arc - 93-101 (108-116) Season 4 (Lat...

Re: Why don't we get any Halloween episodes in Dragon Ball?

I felt a lot of the one-off filler episodes from the Saiyan Saga had a Halloween-y vibe to them, with the Pendulum Room, Arlia, Princess Snake, Fake Moon and Hell episodes all being examples. Or that could just be because the og Ocean dub made them feel like that. Also If (old) Funimation had their ...

If you turned down the contrast levels of the Orange Bricks on Avidemux or some other video editing software I'm pretty sure what you would get is the Blu-Rays True. The Blu-rays are nearly identical to the DVDs with some minor tweaks. It's funny people think the Season BDs are that much better whe...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

It always makes me facepalm that Funimation had the nerve to fire a bunch of veterans to only replace them with a bunch of nobodies because they were cheaper. It clearly shows that Funimation wasn't the best company to handle Dragon Ball. When you hire nobodies to dub over a show that was composed ...

^ Or just watch the uncut Pioneer movies with the Ocean cast. Honestly the best way to appreciate the Ocean cast and its consistent But story wise they aren't really connected at all with each other. The (edited) Tree of Might's theme of Saiyan invasion and usage of characters like Tien and Yamacha...

Re: If FUNimation were to release an 'uncut' Ocean Dub release along with JPN/FUNi dubs?

Ocean Kai is your best bet for a consistent way of watching the series with that cast. Apart from that your only hope would be a complete redub from start to finish. The most consistent way of watching the Ocean dub right now is either the edited Tree of Might dub followed by the Saiyan Saga (same ...

Re: If FUNimation were to release an 'uncut' Ocean Dub release along with JPN/FUNi dubs?

To do so, FUNimation would have to fill in the missing parts with the original Japanese audio but considering Saban chopped off so much content of the episodes, the majority of it would be in Japanese while a small portion in English. So, would it be worth it? Probably not and better to leave as it...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Here is another interview pointing to the late 2000 start date for the Westwood dub. This one was with Saffron Henderson, and it's the interview where she revealed her reason for leaving the show (her wedding conflict). She recorded as many episodes as she could in late 2000 before having to leave....
