Re: Is there a general consensus on what the worst movie is?

Movie 11 is subpar for me, but not for the reasons people think. In fact, a couple years ago, I even ran down the reasons why Bio-Broly is a lot of things that Dragon Ball fans had been asking for (and, to an extent, are still asking for). The biggest reasons why it's a let-down is because of the ti...

Re: Are Power Scalers a cause or symptom of toxicity in the fandom?

This is something that was touched upon in the series itself, but never expanded because the whole ordeal about power levels had long since passed: does power level only mean "of that whole person?" Like, does the Farmer with a power level of 5 Freeza Paps have that power because of his shotgun or ...

Re: Are Power Scalers a cause or symptom of toxicity in the fandom?

Or worse, they treat everything like a card game and act like any attack from a weaker character is negated in the long run. Related: the 90s version of these was REALLY popular in my school back in the day. It probably didn't help. https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-0kvv9/images/stencil/1280x1280/pro...

Re: Nostalgia for the so-called dark ages of DB

I feel a similar way. I got into DB the "era" before you, midway through its OG FUNimation dubbing, so I experienced the series as if it were a new thing still happening (as far as I knew). The period after that between 2005 and 2012 was initially disappointing. At first, I didn't really care. I had...

The general gist I'm getting from this thread is that the 90s dub wrecked a lot of stuff.

Re: Are Power Scalers a cause or symptom of toxicity in the fandom?

In Dragon Ball fandom of the early through mid-90s, Power Levels were INSANELY apocryphal, at best. They in NO way dominated the discourse around the series NEARLY to the extent that they did, hell even by the late 90s, much less today. This is something that ought to be hammered home, especially w...

Re: Did Ultimate Tenkaichi have potential as a full series?

I think RB2 debuted the kai cast Raging Blast 2 debuted the Kai cast. Raging Blast 2 also sent off the OG FUNi cast. Often times within a sentence of each other. It was indeed an embarrassing shitshow. I thought it was Ultimate Tenkaichi that issue? Ah, that's right. I knew there was another reason...

Re: Did Ultimate Tenkaichi have potential as a full series?

This is the only DBZ Game I have returned since the Budokai 1 days and I barely return any game (also Sonic Forces). I just have to say no. Hero mode was so limited. Only thing this game is remembered for in my opinion is the destruction (which was all pre determined) being the first character cust...

Re: Saiyan Family and Friends

Toriyama's original ideas for the Saiyans are much simpler than my own— from what I can ascertain, Saiyans were made to be different from Humans. Or Earthlings specifically. In Dragon Ball, Earthlings are written be generally good people with empathy and kindness but also dark tendencies that lead t...

Re: "Happy" 20th Anniversary of FUNimation's DBZ Season 3 Dub!

You know, I get most of the sentiments expressed in this thread. I only have one question... What's everyone's deal with the music? I thought that, aside from the instruments themselves, it was an improvement in virtually every way! It's my favorite anime soundtrack to date; It's even inspired me t...

Considering how even more inconsequential things have become famous for dumber reasons, I'm surprised "Dragon Ball Super Continuation Confirmed" hasn't become a meme yet.

Re: "Happy" 20th Anniversary of FUNimation's DBZ Season 3 Dub!

A dark day for the series. I don't think anything has ever done as much damage to the integrity of this franchise as the Funi dub did. In retrospect i feel kind of sad about the people who grew up with this version of DBZ. It robbed so many new fans of a far more accurate representation of the show...

"Happy" 20th Anniversary of FUNimation's DBZ Season 3 Dub!

One of the important events in DBZ history in the West besides its first airing, for better or for worse. Just about everything surrounding how Dragon Ball Z is perceived today in America all truly started on September 13th, 1999. Sean Schemmel as the "true" voice of Son Goku, of Bruce Faulconer bei...

Re: Fighterz 2 or Xenoverse 3 for 2020?

XV2 as it exists now is what should've been released in 2016. Xenoverse 2 + DLC is close to having as many characters as the later Tenkaichi games. It only became passable as a game with all of the DLC. And even then, there are many problems with the gameplay and basic game design. Simply getting mo...

Re: You watched DBZ before DB and certain characters didn't make sense

I don't recall being confused, but I definitely made up a lot of my own head canon to fill in the blanks. The first Dragon Ball thing I can clearly remember seeing was a random episode of the Ocean Dub Vegeta Vs Goku fight or a fansub of movie 12 or 13 (loaned to me by a friend of mine who had Drag...

Re: What parts of the franchise evoke nostalgia for you?

Gonna get into some specifics. The "most" nostalgic part of Dragon Ball Z for me was the part that I think I started with seriously. I know for a fact I saw Dragon Ball Z around 2001 or 2002 at midnight, particularly around the reveal of Majin Boo, and I didn't like it much for whatever reason. And ...

Re: Dub Changes That Don't Bother You...that much

I've been thinking about the early Saban dub for a while now (i.e. about 45 minutes) and wondering where the story would have gone if that actually was the definitive version of Dragon Ball Z. That could become its own thread: let's say the DBZ dubs from 1996-1999 were the actual series. Bardock is ...

Re: Evidence that GT influenced Toei’s End of Z?

As a side-bar, I've always pondered as to whether Toriyama wanted to start a new arc, then realized his heart wasn't in it and ended the story. In his own words, he thought that Dragon Ball had effectively been over for a while but Toei's staff kept it going. From 1996, right as GT started airing: ...

Re: Are Power Scalers a cause or symptom of toxicity in the fandom?

They were relying on something unreliable. It didn't take very long after discovering scouters to find ways to hide their full power from it. The numbers are shown to be BS in the show. The Ginyu Force underestimate Goku when he first arrives. Trunks' power was measured to be a measly 5, and Raditz...

Re: Is the Budokai/Budokai Tenkaichi games bad?

As fighting games? Their awful. If you're just playing the story mode their okay but combat is meh. Even their story modes are bad. Budokai 1 had the best presentation, but considering that was the start of the 3D Z games, that only means it was downhill from there. Ever since I left the Sonic fand...
