Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

Weird. I always thought Knuckles was Piccolo and Sonic and Tails were like Goku and Krillin. The character concepts for Sonic and Tails differed pretty far in the 90s from how they are now. Originally, Sonic was entirely self interested and Tails was more like his protege who followed along and ido...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

We can't cleanly draw a line between what is and isn't part of Toriyama's artistic vision, because Dragon Ball has always been the product of multiple people to one extent or another. Obviously the original manga is the thing Toriyama had the most control over, so that's the part you should pay most...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

Nobody could do it like Toriyama. Nobody has done it like Toriyama...but they don't have to. The problem with Dragon Ball outside of Toriyama's involvement is not simply that it lacks his specific energy, but that a lot of it kinda sucks? The point is, nobody can be Toriyama, but Dragon Ball, if it ...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

We lost a legend. I suddenly feel a little guilty for talking shit about his work occasionally, but make no mistake, I have a lot of respect for the man. His work brought endless joy to millions of lives. It was kind of unreal to me to even read the news. I genuinely have never seen my friends, fami...

Re: New Toei film looks DB-inspired?

I'm definitely interested in seeing what happens with this thing, but it's not any more Dragon Ball than other things derivative of Journey to the West. Yeah, monkey guy has spiky hair, but...it's Ohshima. His stuff sometimes looks like Sonic even when it isn't. Still, I'm excited to see where this ...

Re: Dragon Ball Recut [COMPLETE], Dragon Ball Kai Recut [COMPLETE]

Thanks for all your hard work, Milkman. Rest assured that lots of us are still here following your edits, they make enjoying Dragon Ball a much less daunting task. Obviously I'd love to see Kikuchi's work and Z's corrected footage properly recut, but like aspiring-creator, I wouldn't blame you for s...

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

You're giving it way too much credit. Raj doesn't "become more and more confident", he's treated as someone with an actual disorder that the show is content to make fun of for said disorder, who takes experimental drugs to try and help it, and then in one episode just kinda...gets better. ...

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

However I don't understand this, why it is ok for straight males characters like this: Male shy or afraid of Female - DB and Big Bang Theory Male being a neat freak - iCarly Male being afraid of a mouse and screams like a girl - Good Luck Charlie But it is wrong that General Blue is afraid of a mou...

We should get a bat signal or something for whenever someone is spouting stupid shit and we need Kunzait to drop an extremely wordy explosive on their posts.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima (2024)

A dumb 8 minute webtoon series that never left Japan and just existed to promote a trading card game/arcade game isn't really comparable to a web series being released internationally and being pushed by Toei as the franchise big 40th anniversary celebration. And let's ignore Daima for a second. Wh...

Re: Dragon Ball Daima (2024)

We already had a web series that didn't use Super's branding four months after Super ended. Doesn't seem like much of an indicator of anything to me.

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

I do wonder how much of this perception I have is due to my fandom interaction mostly being through forums, which are a dying format. I specifically avoid venturing out into social media spaces where younger, and theoritically more progressive fans are. It makes me curious how much of the pushback ...

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

I think it speaks to how too many vocal voices view art analysis as stopping at silliness like world-builing or feat shit, and don't consider things like reception past barebones 'Is it popular and makes a lot of money?" I think what's hilarious about this dichotomy in general is that A. World...

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

I also don't think it's hard for anyone to simply say "Wow, that writing of women and queer people is bad and weird, I hope they don't do that again!" It takes zero effort to approach art that way, and yet so many people want to defend and sactify this sort of writing in both Dragon Ball ...

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

Most of that also wouldn't really benefit from a Kai style edit because really, the first 100 episodes of One Piece were mostly paced well. I think it wasn't until sometime in Skypiea that stuff started getting noticeably padded. I am truly baffled by statements like this. Did we watch different sh...

Re: One Piece Remake, fans are so lucky...

The One Piece remake is kind of ridiculous to me, because A. We just got that with the Live-Action, and B. The regular series is still going. What is this meant to accomplish? Sure, One Piece's pacing is shit, but they obviously could have DB-Kai'd it with even easier results due to the original foo...
