Re: Dragon Ball DVDs framerate

When you encode an NTSC DVD from a 23.976fps film source, you need to run it through a process called telecine to get 59.94 fields/sec (29.97fps). Think of it like having to fit 24 frames into 60 fields. Since it doesn't divide evenly, you need to show one frame for 2 fields, and the next for 3 fiel...

Re: Missing Frames in Japanese Dragon Boxes?

Edit: is this also the case for eye catchers and endings? Because then replacing the episodes OP, Ed & Catchers could also cause if frame loss if it isn't done carefully enough couldn't it? Not the case. Basically an example disc is laid out like this. from a VOB ID perspective: VID 1: episode ...

Re: Missing Frames in Japanese Dragon Boxes?

I'm having a hard time believing they really had to cut frames to save disc space, but I don't have any better ideas and don't know too much about the production... For what it's worth, the JP Dragon Box has an extremely high bitrate and takes up almost the entirety of a dual-layer DVD. The OP vide...

Re: DBZ Ocean Group Remastered

This is really neat and it's an idea I toyed with a long time ago. It's looking pretty good, but my only criticism, that I think you should be made aware of sooner rather than later, is that it looks like you applied a deinterlace filter to the Dragon Box footage which isn't necessary; it should be ...

Re: Missing Frames in Japanese Dragon Boxes?

This is one of the biggest mysteries that I don't know the answer to. I think at some point, after they got the masters finished, they decided to trim further frames for the final DVD, possibly to save space on the disc, and the least noticeable place to do it would of course be the mostly still fra...

It is quite common for older film-based series to get high quality remasters these days. The 80s and 90s Gundam and Macross series, for example. There is also the work Discotek Media is going for some lesser known stuff.

Re: Dragon Ball Japanese ebooks: accessible and handy?

Rakuten Kobo is great for ebooks, and the DRM is easily removable, however sometime in the past few months they seem to have stopped taking foreign credit cards (none of mine work at least, but YMMV). If you know anyone in Japan, they can buy you a points card at a convenience store to add funds to ...

Re: Does Toei Remaster Better?

From a purely empirical and visual standpoint, yes, the Toei remaster for the movies is leaps and bounds above anything that Funimation has put out. There is no comparison as far as I'm concerned. It's worth mentioning that the intended "wide" AR for the movies is 1.85:1, which is slightly...

Out of curiosity I compared the two myself, and I didn't notice any significant blips in the Nappa cut in the R2 ver. Here's the same frame side-by-side (R2 top): https://i.imgur.com/0QwreOz.png https://i.imgur.com/bitZNXi.png There is, however, this one on R2, where the encoder really struggles to ...

Re: Problem #472 with the Dragon Boxes - DNR

just noticed they fixed this issue on episode 5 with the single. Not sure of this has been mention or not (tho given the age of these releases I wouldn't be surprised) IIRC the top image is from the Funi box. AFAIK the single releases are bit-for-bit identical to the JP box, though I've only confir...

Re: making custom DVDs?

Around 6-7 years ago I was creating custom DVDs, adding the Funi brick subs to the Dragon Box, keeping menus and everything. I eventually stopped doing it because - it was incredibly time consuming and despite my attempts to automate, it just wasn't possible with some of the tools - Burning DVDs tak...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

No, I know for a fact they do. You can see artefacts of it in dark areas. See: https://slow.pics/c/kH6BObxt Toei's DNR largely relies on motion blurring. As for "natural bandwidth limitations of mpeg2"; that shouldn't really be an issue with material like this, particularly with the rathe...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

The Dragon Boxes most definitely had both DNR and sharpening, but it was applied tastefully. I dont think the dragonboxes had dnr, rather they were hit with the natural bandwidth limitations of the mpeg2 on dvd format. No, I know for a fact they do. You can see artefacts of it in dark areas. Re: How to sync Dragon Box R2J to video

DB and GT also suffer from this. DB episode 138 actually has a REALLY bad sync issue; everything except the OP is ahead by one and a half seconds. This is a weird quirk of the way the disc is authored; no other episode in the set is like this. It's on the same logical chunk of video as #137 and if ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

That's the thing which really sucks, in that FUNi for some deliberate reason does not want to put out a release of Z that respects the show for what it is . No... to them it's all about polishing and making it look like a new thing and doing so as cheaply as possible as we have seen with the Orange...

Then there are the Funimation Dragon Boxes. The only release giving me any sort of issue. When you open up their "VIDEO_TS" files, it's a straight up mess. There are multiple lists of the same thing. To just copy and paste (like every other release) would leave me with 76.6GB of data per ...

In general there are very few examples of a long running weekly anime series from the pre digital era that have been remastered for blu ray in Japan. Seasonal shows like gundam have been remastered but nothing of the hundreds of episodes variety. The only ones I can think of are yu yu hakusho and R...

Re: Z Kai Re-Edited Project

The Kai master is from Toei's film, while Funi's an unknown (2nd or 3rd?) generational copy. As such Toei's will always have the strongest color & detail. I'm not a fan of Kai's post-production DNR but its color definition is the best of any of the Dragon Ball releases. Regarding what Ajay menti...
