Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 13; Still Unreleased

I wouldn't draw conclusions from Chinook/Blue Water's response. They're likely just following Ocean's protocol. I don't know why they would list it on their website but all companies involved have seemed pretty disorganized or nonexistent when it comes to their web presence so who knows what happene...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 13; Still Unreleased

Do we know how "Saiyan" was pronounced in this dub, or if they used Kuririn and Tenshinhan vs Krillin and Tien Shinhan? We have Brian Drummond saying Goku like "Gokuu" a few times in recent years, It's pretty much confirmed that Saiyan wasn't changed as Saffron recalls Namek bei...

ABED wrote: Sat Feb 25, 2023 6:14 pmWhy do you find it strange that he lost? Is it because a more conventional narrative would've had him win?
I said it was strange that he still somehow survived. In this case, it didn't make sense for him to be spared death.

Re: "Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks" turns 30

I've always enjoyed this film. The portrayal of Future Gohan is what makes it special to me. The dub isn't very good but the work Dale Kelly did for the replacement soundtrack stands out the most in that version. In terms of plot, I think it's good overall but the final act with Trunks losing the fi...

Re: Deep Thoughts: The Namek Saga (Ocean Dub)

Kids WB is also where the 4Kids dub of Yu-GI-Oh , aired, and that was still notoriously subject to censorship, to varying degrees of silliness. Broadcast television in general seemed to be just a bit more strict than the stuff you saw on stations like Cartoon Network. Also I think their standards h...

Re: Opinions on the Ocean dub of movies 1-3?

Some might be, but the guys at TFS don’t seem to care for Cell in that form either I'm not sure what this means exactly or why TFS is relevant to this discussion. While I might have seen some of the Abridged stuff over the years I'm not personally a fan of the creators and wouldn't know about their...

Re: Opinions on the Ocean dub of movies 1-3?

I would also have to disagree with you on Semi-Perfect Cell’s design not being goofy. He’s by far Cell’s silliest looking form, and was even used as the basis for a certain Internet meme from the late 2000s. The meme you're talking about is taken from a scene where Cell is intentionally drawn with ...

Re: Opinions on the Ocean dub of movies 1-3?

People can dislike certain Ocean voices for reasons that don’t involve whether or not they sound like their Japanese counterparts. Hell, a common consensus on these forums seems to be that Ian James Corlett is the best Ocean voice for Goku, but he sounds absolutely nothing like Masako Nozawa. I've ...

Re: Opinions on the Ocean dub of movies 1-3?

Did anyone in this thread even claim that dub voices have to sound like the Japanese voices? OP took issue with Ocean's voice casting. Clearly, they weren't saying they should sound more like the Funimation/in-house voice cast (as in this case, the Kaio voice is based on the Ocean one), which only ...

Re: Opinions on the Ocean dub of movies 1-3?

The point was that neither is accurate to the Japanese.

As for the justifications for Dameon's second form Cell, I disagree but this isn't the thread for it.

Re: Opinions on the Ocean dub of movies 1-3?

They were still better than Funimation's in-house output until (arguably) the post-Kai era but similar to your criticisms of this dub, I personally find those modern dubs are held back by various problems inherited from Funimation's Z dubs, as well as occasionally being overwritten. The Pioneer/Ocea...

Re: Could foreign dub casts be a thing of the past?

Yeah for Goku I've also always found MasakoX's take on Goku to be pretty much the ideal Goku voice that holds a resemblance to Nozawa without sounding weird (e.g. people might disagree but I never liked Peter Kelamis' movie 2 Nozawa emulation). Let's not get too carried away here. MasakoX (in terms...

Re: Could foreign dub casts be a thing of the past?

I only show excitement for the Horikawa one. And that's because I found it pretty crazy to hear Horikawa's voice speaking English and I much prefer that over every English dub Vegeta voice we've ever gotten. I mean, it sounds more or less like a younger version of Milton James' Vegeta from the US r...

Re: Could foreign dub casts be a thing of the past?

What I'm more curious about here is, why are so many people going "These examples do not sound good, therefore the hypothetical future scenario described will never happen. " Like, you know the whole point here was not "AI voices are currently at a level where they can replace humans...

Enuka Okuma wasn't Android 18, that was a mistake that was only corrected in recent years. Farrell Spence played her until the end of the Cell Games and after that, it appeared that Willow Johnson took over for whatever reason, possibly schedule reasons although Willow Johnson was in a lot more Vanc...

Re: When I compare all the English voices of goku including dbza the one that sounds like how goku sounds like in my hea

I think what OP was getting at is the youthful sound of MasakoX Goku and how that matches the general vibe of Nozawa's, which is partially a byproduct of her being a woman and not having a masculine voice, but there's also the characterization aspect that goes along with it; both are able to represe...

Re: Dragon Ball Z on SubTV in Finland

Now that I think about it, the Danish dub used Rock the Dragon as the their intro, which technically means others in the region had English dub materials. I always thought that was peculiar how they did that, considering the rest of their dub had all the original music and whatnot. Maybe they had a...

Re: Dragon Ball Z on SubTV in Finland

It's great that we finally have more information on this. I had always suspected they might've aired the 'Westwood' dub in parts of Northern Europe but that was mainly because of how Turner Broadcasting EMEA (now Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA) is divided up to control both the UK and Nordic regions. I...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 12; Still Unreleased

The only problem with this theory is when news about Ocean Kai first leaked Kirby Morrow said a new company was in charge of it, and Diana Gage confirmed Ocean produced it. Although maybe because Kirby spent so much time recording at Airwaves for Z he had mistaken them for being the company behind ...
