Re: Kai marketing sold idea that Z series is a flawed series

DBZ TV is very slow but it has its redeeming features. It's a poor adaptation of the manga but I think that the filler is part of what makes the anime worth watching. Unlike a lot of filler in most shounen shows, filler in DBZ was treated just as any other episode was treated. So it's not unbearably...

Re: Best and Worst Animators

In the old days key animators handled like, a half or third of an entire episode on average. There were not a lot of animators per episode. Solo episodes were not uncommon for a series either, especially during the late 70s with longform series' like Lupin III series 2 for example. While it stretche...

Re: Best and Worst Animators

Kameda's animation is very hard to miss/not recognize, especially with those "in your face" sketchy frames. Hironori Tanaka likes to make hair move in very detailed ways. These two guys did pretty much everything good in FMAB. Also, Murad's account getting nuked not too long ago ...

Re: Best and Worst Animators

Um, I have some more questions with regards to the animation (some of these I should have included in my opening post): Also, how can I identify different key animators (what are the distinguing chacteristics of their animation)? Most (good) animators have some defining traits in the way they... an...

Re: Dragonball singles DVD quality?

Well the process from film to the broadcast master tape to the station's airing settings to the quality and settings of the existing recorded versions all have several factors that could completely whack the colors out.

Re: Dragonball singles DVD quality?

The color timing is done on film though. And given that the Dragon Boxes have lots of obvious fading between cuts and reels and such, I'm thinking that Toei might've not touched the colors at all for the Dragon Boxes.

Re: Dragonball singles DVD quality?

I don't know why, but the zooming really bothers me. I'm sure, had I not seen the comparisons, I'd be fine, but just knowing how much picture I'd be losing, I could never buy the Blue Bricks. It sucks, because I've never seen the entirety of Dragon Ball (only about 50 episodes, in fact), but I MUST...

Re: Dragonball singles DVD quality?

It's worth noting that the first 13 (aren't these the episodes that were previously never released uncut in the US? maybe that's why -- perhaps they had no uncut masters...) episodes of the blue bricks are based on new film scans and have good quality, good enough that if the whole series was this w...

Re: Funimation comments on the Blu-Rays, hints at more DBoxe

16mm sourced material does not really need the max bitrate for a very high-quality presentation on BD. Half of that (20mbps) average is probably fine with quality compression software. Good compression work will give high bitrates to sections that need it and lower bitrates to sections that don't, a...

Re: Funimation comments on the Blu-Rays, hints at more DBoxe

For anybody who would argue about cropping footage for widescreen or pan and scan (for whichever form of television), such a practice is undeniably wrong . It's not an opinion, but a fact, please see this site for more information. It's why some Disney movie releases have been released 4:3 instead ...

Re: Funimation comments on the Blu-Rays, hints at more DBoxe

I don't get how a slimmed down release defeats the purpose of the Dragon Box, really. I mean, there were singles releases in Japan... the big box was a limited version. I think the most important part of the Dragon Boxes is the content -- ie, video from high quality masters taken from the original n...

Re: Funimation comments on the Blu-Rays, hints at more DBoxe

Why don't they release a less exquisite version of the Dragon Boxes, with, like, thinpak DVD cases, softcover Dragon Book, and such? That way it's still the Dragon Box at heart, just less collectible I guess. Why though? I mean, if they're gonna do a set that doesn't appeal to the mass market anywa...

Re: Funimation comments on the Blu-Rays, hints at more DBoxe

I had a suspicion that it was related to costs of production and such rather than a limited run forced by Toei. The boxes are pretty heavy and well-made, I imagine they aren't cheap at all to produce and ship. Plus they take up a lot of shelf estate in stores too. Why don't they release a less exqui...

So does this mean if they continue with DBZ on BD, they'll still be using their whatever-generation prints for the release?

Re: The Freeza Saga Challenge

I watched 17 episodes (52-69) of DBZ yesterday and it was a school day. I could probably do 33 episodes on a free day easy. My previous bests are 36 episodes of FMA1 in one day last summer + ~32 (honestly I can't remember the exact amount but I remember going through the last few episodes of one of ...

Re: Best and Worst Animators

Solo episodes or two-people episodes didn't seem too uncommon back in the day, especially for long-form shows. How many other DB/Z episodes were solo? Some shows these days still have solo episodes but they tend to be more "artsy" shows, like Kemonozume or Mawaru Penguindrum. And it tends ...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

but that is for analog only and shouldn't really apply to digital sources. I don't know why Funi does that to their releases. Dragon Boxes are film transfers, they aren't a digital source. Do notice the ringing and how bright they can be at times, but neither of those really bother me- perhaps havi...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

This counts, right?... Funimation's Dragon Boxes look bad. Too much low-pass filtering and mosquito noise, it's especially noticeable when you watch it on an HDTV with an upscaling player -- lots of huge ringing everywhere. The R2J DVDs look much better. I realize that Funi had to fit more episodes ...

Re: FUNimation's Dragon Boxes have indeed been discontinued

I REALLY can't tell if this is legit or not: [link removed just in case] Apparently they ship you the thing but they also sign you up for a $10/mo "membership fee" that's basically impossible to cancel. So, legit and not legit? Maybe trying to buy with a prepaid debit card is worth a shot.
