Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

You literally are given an explanation for why something in Dragon Ball is the way it is, but instead of accepting that, you have to construe it as meaning something else because.... why? That Dragon Ball has to be political? That it has to be "deep"? You're trying to squeeze out the mean...

Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

Holy fucking shit, 'Carbombya'? That is disgusting. Its not even clever! On top of being nauseatingly racist, nativist, etc. its just sheer fucking cringe-ass we're-not-even-trying-here lazy and moronic on its face! This is the kind of shit someone like Steven Crowder would use for a "bit"...

Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

In particular, one such example of this that I was thinking of was in the 1984 Transformers cartoon when it featured an episode with a fictional country named "Carbombya" https://i.imgur.com/PIEaj0J.gif And you people wonder why exactly it is that I shit so much on children's cartoons?

Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

It's probably helpful to mention that the real point of contention for most when they speak about stuff like this is whether or not there's shoehorned propaganda of any kind in any era (like most US media tends to be, honestly), not necessarily whether it has anything to do with "politics"...

Re: The end of era: Sony discontinues the Funimation brand on April 2

Kunzait_83 : Streamline may have been a good contender for Dragon Ball, as far as I know their dubs were some of the better ones in the 90s, although maybe they would have been unlikely because Harmony Hold (who Carl Macek also owned) already had the license. I'm not sure about other options beside...

Re: Actual Celebrities doing dubbing on Dragon Ball (Star Talents)

And that felt more like Toriyama just making it easy on himself to explain how Piccolo could conquer the world so easily "he only has to overthrow one power" (at least I don't think he established a single monarch ruled the earth until the Daimao arc). Again though, that ties into the fac...

Re: The end of era: Sony discontinues the Funimation brand on April 2

I imagine if Pioneer was the licensee from day 1 we would have gotten the correct pronunciation for Saiyan If Pioneer were the licensee from Day 1, at least 95% (minimum) of the incredibly inane, tortured arguments and bickering that the DB fanbase in the West (the U.S. in particular, but the West ...

Re: Actual Celebrities doing dubbing on Dragon Ball (Star Talents)

I really don't understand how people easily torpedo their careers using social media. No matter what you believe, you should be able to know that those statements are at the very least controversial. Not to mention, using politics is a good way to alienate half of your potential audience in the US....

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I'm not saying I agree with the sentiment. In fact, I despite it for pretty much every single thing you just said right there. I'm a gay person myself. But that was the point I wanted to emphasize. Be it for cultural reasons or what-not, very few people in the West care about the concept of "c...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

There are more arguments about the X-Men suddenly being "woke" than there are of the original authors' involvement, for example. I mean, this is pretty much as clear-cut of an example of a self-invalidating argument as I've ever heard. The whole "X-Men have suddenly gone woke" t...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Many indie western comics are similar with manga with the comic is over when the author is done with it. Like as seen with The Maxx, Invincible, Hellboy (the spin offs are still a thing), Preacher, etc. Absolutely for sure: but those are almost never what's being thought of by most folks here whene...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Honestly, I have NEVER seen a single person complain about Spiderman canon, or argue "this isn't written by Stan Lee" when it comes to criticizing Sam Raimi's films, or anything of the sort. Heck, I doubt there's a single person alive who sincerely thinks Disney adaptations are worse than...

Re: Justin Chatwin apologizes for Dragonball Evolution

As for Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro was fucking awesome. He even confirmed to me face to face that he is a fan of Doraemon. Even debated how Nobita is a useless character. Doesn't even remotely surprise me to hear that: Del Toro has by all accounts always been an incredibly down to earth, genuin...

Re: Justin Chatwin apologizes for Dragonball Evolution

It's not everyday you get to see apology coming from writer and actor. I dunno: reportedly for many, many years after the movie came out, anytime a fan told George Clooney that they saw Batman & Robin in theaters, he would actually refund them their ticket money out of his own pocket. Hon...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

How would a post-capitalist world work though? I agree, it sickens me when large corporations put the bottom line before peoples mental or physical wellbeing, but no one can get by in this world without money. Some people have too much of it and others have too little, although it would be very cha...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

And to be clear, I'm not using profit as a bad word. We live in a capitalist world, for better or for worse, and this is how we engage with artists and creatives in a market-driven environment. Of course we live in a capitalist world, and obviously there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that. Its...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

keeping the Dragon Ball franchise relevant in an ever-changing entertainment market See to me, this is basically just a different way of wording "profit-seeking corporations that will drive something into the ground if left unchecked" . To me, these are both the same exact thing, just wor...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

I'm generally in the "Dragon Ball ended in 1995" camp, but what happens from here on is definitely going to be different in some specific ways. Part of what made me interested in Super was the idea of "where would Toriyama have gone next, after Boo?", and even if the answers we ...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

Pardon me, but do you not believe that Toriyama was largely behind Dragon Ball Daima? Or were you just commenting on what's been released already? I was commenting on what was released thus far. Apart from being heavily involved in the scriptwriting for the theatrical movies, Toriyama's involvement...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

There's really not much to say on this topic: Dragon Ball is basically going to just be another whored-out mega IP like any other, a mechanism for major media corporations in Japan (and around the world) to generate revenue off of. As much as people don't like to admit this (for whatever reason), ev...
