Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

One thing to keep in mind is that Akira Toriyama was not a dictator even when he was actively working on the original manga. He seemed more than willing to pivot based on feedback from his editors and collaborators. He'd come up with designs based on ideas from other people. The tone changed during ...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

I think one thing that's worth expressing is gratitude for having been there. Think about what it must have been like being a kid at the theatrical premiere of Wizard of Oz, for example. We all know of things that totally rewrote the book but think about the privilege of being specifically one of th...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

My rationale is that so many things wouldn't exist if we rigidly closed the book on stuff the second the founder dies or retires. I know, but by the same token, how many original things would exist instead, if they didn't play on someone else's sandbox? It's like a creative crutch, which invariably...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

I think the best way to respect people's contributions to the zeitgeist is to make sure they outlive the flesh and blood humans who created them. Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster aren't with us anymore but Superman is. Gene Roddenberry isn't with us anymore but Star Trek is. William Shakespeare, Walt D...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

Incredibly sad news and extremely infuriating. I owe him a thanks for all the fun and good times. With this it's like Dragon Ball itself is dead too and I find it hard to have enthusiasism for new content without him to supervise. I think the best way to respect people's contributions to the zeitge...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

I'm still having trouble processing this. This came completely out of left field. It's the first I've heard of him even suffering from an ailment. Rest in Peace. Acute subdural hematoma sounds like it might have been caused by an accident rather than disease. Some kind of head trauma. Obvious...

Re: Who Else Has the Potential to Turn 'Good'?

Anyone in DB can become good-enough if they're exposed to Goku's infectious naivety for too long. Just look at Freeza, he went from a total psychopath that randomly kills his minions whenever he feels like it to tolerating a minor degree of disrespect from others. The old Freeza never would've allo...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

I'm sure it's been answered somewhere but I'll ask again. Are they doing a retcon so that Goku and Vegeta are now the same age? "Three saiyans born at around the same time" does not necessarily mean that they are "the same age". It could mean that they were born in the same gene...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

Nah Broly and vegeta are too busy trying to kill each other. To be honest, I think the main reason why Freeza was brought back for the ToP was just to be used and killed in this movie. Either Broly or Vegeta doing it would satisfying. One thing that would be even better is Broly or Vegeta killing B...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

Even though I've been a Dragon Ball fan for around 20 years (and I'm 25 years old), constantly still following Dragon Ball and it being my favorite manga/anime of all time, this whole Bardock retcon and Minus doesn't bother me at all. I'm still going to enjoy this movie. The changes won't determine...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

Exactly. I know the Bardock Special is particularly popular, but other than character designs, Toriyama had nothing to do with it like the other Specials and Films. But something that always struck as odd from the special, despite information to the contrary, was that Bardock was supposed to be som...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

It literally says in the trailer that Bardock, Broly, and Goku are born around the same time. 5 year gap is NOT around the same time. I don't exactly remember, is it mentioned on the manga that there's a 5 year gap between Goku and Vegeta? I mean Goku doesn't remember about his saiyan heritage, but...

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged

Fantastic work--not just the episode but the entire series. I'm not going to go into ass-kiss mode so what I'll say is this--when people discuss what Dragon Ball is "about" they usually focus on the superficial veneer that's been parodied and exaggerated a million times and that perspectiv...

Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse

After watching Kale in DBSuper 100, I'm even more convinced that the Toei writers are getting ideas from DB Multiverse. Right down to the random Broly energy blasts being tossed around the arena at the other competitors. Any similarities seem pretty coincidental, mostly because both are drawing fro...

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged

Sitcoms are dialogue driven so anything that sufficiently entertains through casual banter is going to seem sitcom-like. I think South Park is a better comparison, though, because, while sitcoms usually have the protagonists driving the plot, South Park tends to drag them along kicking and screaming.

Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse

I agree that "He must pay for his crimes" is unusually articulate for Goku. There are a number of lines like that peppered throughout that I wonder if it's a translation quirk. But the overall tenor of Goku's reaction is spot on, I think. It is a bit of a let down to have skipped over the ...

I bet he's bluffing. More importantly, he's holding Ginyu in a "safe" position so he can't change with anyone other than Bra. But that reflection in the glass...

Did he really have to grab his own daughter by the crop top? :? Yes. Remember guys: Anyone remember THE PACT? The Pact still stands, Salagir! Salagir, this seems to be the pact! xD I'm still waiting for Bra to lose her shirt. Come on, Salagir! Write it in, even if it's for just one panel! An...

Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse

I think it's safe to say that Ginyu is going to swap with Vegetto which would explain Bardock's visions. The bigger question is how Bra gets back in her own body. Maybe we'll have a Futurama scenario where everyone gets swapped around. :D
