Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions

I just realized that Namekians are vaguely elf-like, though I've never seen anyone else make that comparison. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elves_in_fiction#Characteristics_and_common_features Modern fantasy literature has revived the elves as a race of semi-divine beings of human stature who are fr...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

BSG was a reboot. I wanna see Samurai Jack, but Star Trek bores me to tears, so I'll take your word for that one. Just keep in mind I said "very few" not none. I haven't watched much of Star Trek myself, just a few episodes on best-of lists (almost all TNG). They were good, but I can't see myself b...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

I don't mind the writing but it's not surprising modern stuff doesn't have the staying power of DB at its height. It's several hundred episodes in. It's hardly surprising that later stuff just isn't as memorable or isn't held in the same regard. That and the series long since passed its logical con...

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 4/27/20!)

Toriyama really should have spent more time with the "domesticated" Vegeta if he wanted to sell Majin Vegeta just a few months later. As an aside I always thought Gohan's whole relationship with that family (Vegeta, Bulma, Trunks) could have been explored more. Not dwelt on, because this is Dragon B...

Honestly, I don't remember how strong is old Slug.
Around as strong as non-SS Goku is in that movie. Slug tells Goku that he might have had a chance against him before he regained his youth, but now that he's in his prime again, he can beat Goku around effortlessly.

Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions

What if the various tournaments in the series took a page out of real life and instituted weight classes? Or rather, power level classes? Like how in boxing, guys who weigh between 130 and 135 (lightweight) wouldn't fight guys who weigh between 160 and 168 (super middleweight) because everyone know...

Re: Where did the powercreep really start?

Herms first pointed it out in his series retrospective with Geekdom: visual escalation disappears in the Saiyan arc. Once Vegeta says he can destroy a planet (and actually does it, in the anime) all bets are off. As Herms put it, you can watch Goku's fight with Vegeta in isolation and easily come aw...

Re: Kid Goku didn't have a power-level of ten at the beginning of DB.

1. Power levels aren't linear. Piccolo Daimao in the hundreds still had to expend notable effort to blow up a city, while Piccolo Jr. at 408 was able to blow up the moon, which requires literally quadrillions of times more energy. 2. A bear with a power level of 5 will still be much stronger than a ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

Was Toyotaro implying that if those women didn't have power greater than Roshi's, he would've just sexually assaulted them and they'd have been powerless to stop it? So much for responsible usage of martial arts... Tenshinhan not being able to insult people is so weird to me. That was all his dialog...

Re: Least favourite performances in your dub

It's always a pet peeve of mine when it comes to fictional aliens having accents from Earth when they are not even from that planet. Jeece having an Australian accent comes to mind. Everyone in the universe speaks the same language but you're bothered by an accent? I feel like there’s a difference ...

Re: Least favourite performances in your dub

I recently learned that kid Trunks in the Funimation dub (one of the aforementioned unbearable raspy child voices) was voiced by Laura Bailey. I wonder what the director was telling her because she is not a bad VA normally, yet her Trunks was atrocious.

Like my favorite, Justified. Or, you know, Breaking Bad. Banditos, griff lawmen, pistol duels, train robberies, Indian reservations, a clearly Western soundtrack, lots of abandoned desert areas for showdowns, the cocky young gun being brutally exposed to reality, themes of losing your humanity and ...

Re: Team Four Star's influence on Dragon Ball's revival

I'm not sure how much influence DBZA had on Super, either way i'm glad it exists. I’m not sure about Super but in the Broli movie the “*I heard this planet was repugnant” joke seemed to be a nod to the “You just use words you hear other people use to sound smarter” gag in DBZA. That line was in the...

Re: Top Three Favorite Fights

All three of the main Saiyan arc battles have a great sense of progression, tension, and viscerality that is never really matched by any of the battles before or after, on top of emphasizing teamwork, a relative rarity for this series. So I guess my top three would be: 1. Goku, Gohan, Krillin, and Y...

Aside from the obvious choice of Young as Freeza, every single raspy child voice was just unbearable.
