Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I'm a more casual Dragon Ball fan in that I'm a broader anime fan that's followed the medium/industry for 25 years and have about 1,500 releases on my shelves, and Dragon Ball's something I enjoy among the entire medium without being obsessive about it. So I don't live and breath the series or regul...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

It's not like streaming and piracy haven't been the go-to for the average anime "consumer" for about a decade now (or longer, for piracy), and aside from the bubble burst quite a ways back, the physical US industry has reoriented itself and currently enjoys sustainability among the hardcor...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

Have there been anymore pics past the first episode to judge the potential cropping / aspect ratio? Is that Piccolo shot past the first? It's been so long since I last watched DBZ that I can't recall. My set finally arrived. The packaging and art are incredibly underwhelming, especially for $375, an...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

Also, separate from this, someone in the comments of that video told me that someone said to them that FUNi might've added fake grain to the images, or that they noticed grain & suspected it was that. We'll know once people start reviewing it &/or start posting clips for sure on that one. T...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

Aren't these supposed to come with a numbered certificate? Surprised I haven't seen one yet in one of those eBay links. Can anyone remind me when the sets were first available to order? My Funi receipt E-mail is from 1:08 EST on April 5th, and I can't recall if the ordering was made available at 1:0...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

Again, FUNi gave us the Dragon Boxes after the orange bricks, I can see that happening again now. I imagine Funi gave us the DBZ DBoxes merely because the work on the remaster had already been done by Toei, and so it was a relatively simple venture to capitalize upon in order to repackage/remarket ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I could see them doing an eventual 4k release. Doubt 8k will ever catch on enough to be worthwhile though, lol... But they'll likely have the exact same mindset: "We're releasing a product on televisions that are more crystal clear than ever before. Who would want that expensive and marvelous s...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I've been buying R1 anime for 20 years. I own probably around (or at least) 100 Funi titles. At no point have I ever felt that Funi wasn't the absolute worst US company, aside from the years when Mangle Entertainment existed. Their quality and practices are routinely dogshit (nowhere near to the sam...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

It seems like there's a myth here that YouTube compresses the grain too much or even in its entirety but that's not true. This is from YouTube: https://i.postimg.cc/5t6Qj1Kk/Level-Set-You-Tube.png Heavily disagree. I've uploaded some PS1 footage to YouTube with the system's original dithering, and ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

But it absolutely kills me when I see things change from the original, mostly when it comes to movie remakes like the lion king (the bloody movie was perfect and ageless but they still decide to remake it). I mean, you seem to have enjoyed the first (American) remake of Kimba the White Lion well en...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I too want my legacy destroyed as a birthday gift I feel bad for Toriyama. I feel like he wouldn't appreciate this... Generations from now, people are going to know DBZ as the show that looks like garbage and has a prequel calld Dragon Ball. Again I'm far from being the most hardcore DB fan like ma...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

The thing is though, that Funi has rarely given a shit about video quality throughout their entire library. Their bitrate sucks, they do indeed DNR many of their shows (including Bebop, which they nonsensically did just to regrain it, which I previously mentioned in comparing this Anniversary releas...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

This set is not going to sell out I don’t think this is a limited time period. I just think it only has a month to get to 3000. If it gets there it will probably be available to buy for a lot longer. WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO RESERVE A SET? To reserve a set, you must provide a credit/debit card numbe...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I was indeed wrong about the 4:3 and the price point, but I was right in that the only way it could be 4:3, cheap, and released so quickly, was if they simply reused their existing season remaster sans the crop. Almost surely it'll be missing NEPs, and have the dub-centric presentation of the season...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

While I'm no expert on the technical details, among the broader anime fandom, it's well-known that Funi's alternate angles introduced significant macroblocking to the shows that featured them. Even in scenes where no alternate angles were present. I forget and/or can't explain why that is, but I thi...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

Hey can someone update me with the basics of what's going on here? I just got back from alabama the other day and just buried my father yesterday so I haven't kept up with anything at all. will this be limited like the dragonboxes or will they rerelease these sets later on? Okay, here's what we kno...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

There's really no way we're getting NEPs unless Funi does the Saiyan-Cell arc all over again. Also, the instrumental for the background needs to still be available, if it was ever available in the first place. Assuming they have access to the Japanese rights/materials, there's no excuse other than ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

If we were again to compare this Funimation Anniversary Collector's Edition release to Bebop's, Funimation didn't give any indication as to whether the discs would be newly reauthored (fixing their DNR/regrain nonsense) or reused, and fans only found out for the first time when the sets actually shi...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

Gohan looks relatively good in the 16:9, but that Goku shot is way too cramped imo, and as you point out, sacrifices showcasing his broken fingers (which is good if they do indeed creep you out XD). The US Kai BDs are 4:3, right, whereas it was broadcast and offers its DVDs in 16:9? I might've been ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

After this I'll stop contributing to the derail, but, starting with Friends, you're all right and I was wrong about the crop, as most of the time it's simply expanded, but there are indeed many a scene when I rewatched a season or so on Netflix where I've noticed obvious cropping (when they couldn't...
