Re: What would a reboot have to do in order to comply to today's standards?

On the subject of queer representation, I’ve been starting to think more about this topic, and I’m kind of just wondering if Dragon Ball is even the kind of franchise that would bother with that in any real capacity, at least when it comes to Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. Akira Toriyama has of course made...

Re: The worst we could have gotten in the 90s

I suppose that Goku could’ve been portrayed as a stoic and no-nonsense kind of hero. As much as FUNimation got Goku’s character wrong, they did at least acknowledge his goofy moments some of which they made up on their own.

Re: What would a reboot have to do in order to comply to today's standards?

Dragon Ball is one of those things that isn’t likely to get an actual reboot anytime soon. The closet it has had to a proper reboot was Kai, but that’s just a condensed version of the old anime.

Re: DB could work as Cartoon Series?

They tried just that in the 90s, but did so through dubbing the original series to turn it into an 80s action show, the kind with action figures and cereal. If we did it fully our way, Son Goku would be a lantern-jawed Superman clone spouting cheesy one-liners, and there'd be even more dorky kid-fr...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 29 - DB movie 3 (CURRENT WEEK)

Frankly, the big problem with that particular dub is its constant insistence on inserting dialogue into scenes that are silent in the original. This man speaks the truth. Were they under the thought process back then that if there wasn't constant noise people watching would immediately get bored an...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 29 - DB movie 3 (CURRENT WEEK)

There probably isn’t much monetary gain in FUNimation producing completely new English dubs for movies they’ve already dubbed before. As badly butchered as the dub of the Bardock special is, if FUNimation didn’t produce a redub for it when it was screened for Fathom Events a couple of years ago, ch...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 29 - DB movie 3 (CURRENT WEEK)

I don’t see what’s wrong with having something resembling the horror genre in Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball is more flexible that people give it credit for. There’s an entire story arc that’s basically a homage to the Terminator franchise.

Re: Could have Dragon Ball survived in the English Speaking world without Cartoon Network?

The big advantage with DBZ airing on Cartoon Network is that it aired every day each week, instead of once a week on Saturday mornings or whenever, and considering how many episodes of DBZ there are, that was definitely for the best.

Re: The All-Purpose Bardock & Goku Thread

I think it’s kind of funny that FUNimation’s dub of the Bardock special basically foreshadowed how the character would be depicted in stuff like Episode of Bardock and Minus.

Re: What are the chances of Freeza becoming a genuinely good guy?

I hope they don't change Freeza, he's currently written as an irredeemable evil opportunist who will only do good if it benefits him in some way. Given the opportunity, he would destroy the gods and take over the 12 universes. I wouldn’t count on seeing them tackle any kind of grand story like that...

Re: DB could work as Cartoon Series?

While I wouldn’t care for the idea of a American Dragon Ball cartoon, I can’t say I understand this idea that Western entertainment is incapable of handling Eastern themes. Not every piece of entertainment that gets made in America involves superheroes.

Re: DB could work as Cartoon Series?

Not all stories made in the West follow a “Western” structure. Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American show, but it clearly has some major Eastern influences.

Has FighterZ made Budokai 3 obsolete?

Budokai 3 used to be seen as the epitome of Dragon Ball fighting games, but pretty much everyone agrees that FighterZ has the far superior combat system. Does that make B3 redundant, or is there anything people would argue that it actually does better compared to FighterZ?

Re: False Super Saiyan Appreciation Thread

Toei’s decision to call the movie “Super Saiyan Son Goku” was clearly an attempt to try and preempt the transformation’s appearance in the manga. The manga had been generating quite a bit of hype surrounding the Super Saiyan concept at that point, so Toei obviously realized they could make some dece...

Re: False Super Saiyan Appreciation Thread

It’s a little difficult to get past the fact that the form exists as nothing more than a cheap marketing stunt for a subpar movie. The form wasn’t even relevant to the rest of the movie. It just came and went. They could’ve at least had Goku defeat Slug in that form. All things considered, it’s not ...

I can definitely buy that Kid Boo is top tier. He was always a pain to fight against in that game, but what makes Broly the best of the best?
