Re: Introducing Somebody New To Dragon Ball

The first episode of Kai undermines the reveal about Goku's origins. That's because it was being presented as its own thing rather than a sequel/continuation of DB so they had to find a way to start it without the viewer feeling the need to watch what came before. Oh yeah, I understand why, and I a...

Re: Favorite Filler Moments

I have mixed feelings about most of the filler. I always like the idea, if not the execution, of the filler that expands on existing stories and fills in gaps, rather than dragging things out. Threading the Pilaf gang through the first arc, Goku's solo training while travelling the world, the heaven...

Re: Dub lines and even aspects that you like.

That's a good point, a lot of the dialogue and delivery in the Dragon Ball is actually pretty funny and it's a bit more appropriate place for Funimation's "punching up" of the script. Speaking of that, does anyone have a link to that scene where Roshi is teaching Goku how to read and makes him read...

Re: Introducing Somebody New To Dragon Ball

If I were introducing someone to DB these days I'd start with IAmTheMilkman's DB Recut then Kai with Yamamoto, since the biggest thing that seems to put people off is how slow it can be at times, but Kai's Kikuchi placement is... Not the best the series can be, let's say. Sometimes it's possible wit...

Re: Dub lines and even aspects that you like.

"AND I DONT CARE IF YOU'RE A MILLION TIMES STRONGER THAN ME" Also, I don't know why but one that always made me laugh much more than the Japanese counterpart was from Roshi in episode 3 of Dragon Ball. Where in the original he thought to himself something along the lines of "I don't suppose she'd w...

Should the English "Bulma" have been "Blooma"?

The main argument I can see for pronouncing the name "Bulma" in English is that this is how it's written on her first outfit in Dragon Ball, but "well come", "Gokou" and "Klillin" have also been written on things on the series if I remember correctly. The other would be if they intentionally wanted ...

Re: Would you want a full reanimation to combine DB and Z in a single series?

In Toei's current condition, no, I wouldn't. Besides the production itself being very poor, I don't think DB works without Minoru Maeda, Shunsuke Kikuchi and the rest of the members of the original staff. I mean, DB would never being so popular in the whole world if the OST, for example, wasn't the...

Would you want a full reanimation to combine DB and Z in a single series?

If a full, newly animated adaptation of the Dragon Ball manga were to be made, the likes of which some people wished Kai had been, how would you want it do handle the split between what have come to be known as "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball Z"? Do you think it should simply cover all 42 manga volum...

Re: Full Colour manga releases

Viz is releasing three volumes per year, allegedly. https://www.viz.com/news/newsroom/1006052 Future volumes will be published three times a year. So we're going to have to wait till 2021 to get the Buu arc and possibly 2023 for the original DB ? That's the worse marketing thing they could've done....

Re: show do not tell. db super writers need to understand that

Don't blame the times, all of those super hero cartoons and johnny quest/transformers cartoons were all about selling toys back in the 90's. It was so bad that T.V. Guidelines in America had to make it illegal to sell toys related to the show in the same time-slot. If something doesn't make money, ...

Re: show do not tell. db super writers need to understand that

The writers don't have full control. The series director doesn't have full control. They're pawns of shitty corporate overlords who believe there is a specific way to handle their hugely popular property. This is exactly what's wrong with Super. The capitalistic, toy-selling, robotic, no-love produ...

Re: What made you switch over to the Japanese version?

In a way it was because I'd had a bit of a break from the series, and the Viz manga was a sort of stepping stone. I watching the Ocean/Funi/Westwood Frankenstein dub of DBZ we got in the UK back in the day, then years later when I'd got into other anime as a teenager, read some manga, I thought "hey...

Re: Bruce Faulconer or Shunsuke Kikuchi ?

For the superior experience, I'd always say watch in Japanese. That's definitely how I'd introduce it to someone. However, if you're going to watch the English dub, you might as well watch it with the Faulconer score which was tailor made for it, especially if you're partially watching out of nostal...

Re: Does DBZ have the most over-hyped anime English dub of all time?

You do still see, pretty much everywhere except here, people saying to watch the dub because the music is so much better. I think to a lot of people in English-speaking world, the replacement score is closer to what they culturally expect from an action series and what they've learned "fits". It's n...

Re: Is u7 overpowered

What's happening here actually goes against the central theme of the whole of Dragon Ball, in a way. "The world is always much bigger than you imagined. There's always someone stronger out there." The world grows and grows, always dwarfing what came before, and we see you've never made it to the top...

Re: Has anyone done blind reactions/experience reports from the beginning?

About 8 years ago on the old Funimation Forums, a UK user watched the entire franchise at the time on recorded his reactions in a thread. It was like watching a child grow up. That sounds like something I'll have to track down. "Watching a child grow up" is pretty much what this sort of thing is fo...

Has anyone done blind reactions/experience reports from the beginning?

Reacting to and reviewing shows on Youtube so others can follow one's first-time experience is a pretty commonplace thing these days, and plenty of people have done it for the TFS Abridged series, but I'm surprised with Dragon Ball being such a popular series that nobody appears to have done that so...

Re: Why didn't Goku's first SSJ transformation get a unique insert song.

An insert song, I'm not sure that would work, but it definitely deserved a new, evocative theme. Both Z and Kai used pieces that had been repeated over and over and become just standard BGM pieces. This is at least one good thing I can say about the Faulconer version, it used a new theme for the sce...

Re: Could the ToP have been a bit more "Hunger Games"?

It would also probably be hard to enforce the rules. Everyone would be out of sight and we know the gods arent all seeing. Yeah, we know the gods aren't all seeing, but we've seen plenty examples of gods watching things through orbs or simply watching fights from a distance with their minds. It wou...
