Re: "Getting Used To" The Original Version

I'll admit that I do think it sounds like 60's/70's martial arts movie music, or "Godzilla music" as I called it as a kid, but that's what DragonBall is: a bombastic over-the-top martial arts series. So it fits perfectly. Fun fact: Kikuchi actually did the soundtrack for several of the Gamera movie...

Re: Episode #0388 (20 September 2015)

Cool episode, guys. I'm glad there was finally an episode on this subject. Just a couple of things I'd like to point out: "Peking" isn't actually the Wade-Giles romanization of Beijing. Pei-Ching is. Peking is the "postal romanization," a system of romanizing place names for shipping purposes develo...

"A child like you could have died".
What does that even have to do with being "PC"?

Re: What's up with Toriyama and Toei?

If some hypothetical person in the future is willing to invest all the hundreds of hours necessary to watch DB, DBZ, and DBSuper, I doubt that adding a couple of 90 minute movies into the equation would suddenly be a deal-breaker. The problem is that can also become confusing for future new fans. D...

Re: How accurate is the original "Dragon Ball" English dub?

Quality varies depending on whichever scriptwriter was working on a particular episode (If Christopher Neel or Sean Teague wrote it, steer clear!). Where can I see who wrote each episode of the dub? If I remember correctly Funimation uses the same end credits for every episode, so those aren't any ...

Re: What's up with Toriyama and Toei?

These millions of unborn future Dragon Ball fans haven't seen DB, DBZ, or Kai either. And what would be more pragmatic? Watching DB, then Z, then Super? Or watching DB, then Z, then Battle of Gods and F, then Super? Obviously the most pragmatic would be watching none at all. If some hypothetical pe...

Re: What's up with Toriyama and Toei?

Because you're thinking short-term. Millions of people have already seen it, and other millions have not. Millions of people that are yet to be born and will, hopefully, be watching the series later on in their lives have also not seen the movies. These millions of unborn future Dragon Ball fans ha...

Re: To The People That Switched From Dub To Sub...

I never had a problem with the Japanese voices. Occassionally I would be surprised when a character's original voice was very different from the English dub (for example, the first time I watched DBZ Movie 1 in Japanese, I was surprised to find out that Garlic Jr. has a deep, commanding voice, since...

Re: What do you prefer for the attack names in sub/dubs?

If we're going to pick at this, let's go all the way! Kamehameha is borrowed from a Hawaiian name and turned into a pun which explains its odd lettering. (citation) . Still, I think the popular literal translation of "Turtle Devastation Wave" comes from pulling apart the punny name and reading it a...

Re: Saiyan being spelt as Saiyan

Shenlong's anime pronounciation always bugged me. "Shenurono" would have been more convincing. "Shenron" sounds neither Japanese, the language of the production, nor fitting the possible Chinese appearance of the dragon. I don't understand how "Shenurono" should sound more convincing. It doesn't so...

Re: Positive changes/Woolseyisms

He obviously didn't mean it as a racial slur, though, and you all know that but naturally wouldn't let up an opportunity to jump down his throat and mini-mod go past. Never have I ever encountered a Japanese person that has flashbacks to racism and hatred upon seeing the word "Jap" used in referenc...

Re: What do you prefer for the attack names in sub/dubs?

I would've thought "Why are they eating balls of rice?" It's not a normal thing for most Americans, let alone American kids, to know about. It's just localization. Cater to the masses, not the weeaboos. I was an American kid who watched Pokemon, and knew basically nothing about Japan. I could tell ...

Re: What do you prefer for the attack names in sub/dubs?

Taiyō Ken (太陽拳) literally means Solar Fist (or Sun Fist). It has nothing to do with "spiritual energy." That's not strictly true, and you really shouldn't dismiss people like that. By "spiritual energy", I'm talking about how everything in Dragon Ball is linked to Ki. Not specifically "spiritual en...

Re: What do you prefer for the attack names in sub/dubs?

So what about something like 'Taiyō-ken'? The dub calls that 'Solar Flare' and there's no explanation behind it. I can kinda see what they were going for, but it kinda undermines the whole martial arts, spiritual energy thing that Dragon Ball has going for it. Taiyō Ken (太陽拳) literally means Solar ...

Re: What do you prefer for the attack names in sub/dubs?

Personally I like the Japanese names and knowing what they mean. I don't really care for the exotic approach of treating them as cool sounding gibberish. Kamehameha > Turtle Wave Beam. Actually, the way it's written is just "Kamehame Wave" (かめはめ波). "Turtle Wave Beam" would be something like Kame Ha ...

Re: Am I the only one who hates all these new movies?

The whole concept of the "god" thing was really underplayed until BOG was released. And then everyone threw the term "god" around like it means nothing. And it isn't limited to DB, fucking Kanye West and Eminem did it too. It's not really underplayed (except in the English dub and subtitles). After...

I don't hate Cha-La Head Cha-La. But I like We Gotta Power more. This goes for the songs themselves as well as their corresponding intro animations. As far as the songs themselves go, I like Cha-La Head Cha-La a lot, but We Gotta Power gets me more excited. It has a more exciting melody and arrangem...

Re: Are saiyans aboriginals of Planet Vegeta?

In reality, we cant accept it as canon because of how it makes even less sense than most of Z's own filler did. I for sure can't make sense of it. I'm not crazy about Bardock being the original Super Saiyan, but I don't remember anything about the special that really confused me. What exactly didn'...
