Re: Movie titles: the bad, the bad, and the also pretty bad
I always go by the English titles because I have no bloody way of remembering which Japanese title goes with which film. On the meta Cooler thing: in the Metroid games, Ridley made of metal is called Meta-Ridley, rather than Metal Ridley. I'm not sure if this was a translation thing or actually in ...

Re: Why were African Americans represented so poorly in DBZ
Does Toriyama exacerbate Asian eyes? No. No, but a lot of current American animation does, despite the fact that terms like "squint eye" used to be used as racial slurs. But somehow people accept the fact that, yes, Asians do have epicanthic folds, and acknowledging that is not offensive. It's just...

Re: What Does Dragon Ball Have Over The Shonen Of Today?
when Goku defeated Piccolo at the tournament, pretty much everything that had been going on up to that point had been satisfyingly wrapped up. What about why goku was so strong and was able to transform into a gaint ape ? That's a big thing to leave with out an awnser we had no idea about Goku's or...

Re: Movie titles: the bad, the bad, and the also pretty bad
I love the overblown Japanese titles. When I first watched the Japanese version of DB, and saw the long, overly-excited episode and movie titles, I thought it was distinctive and interesting in a fun, cheesy (but also kinda cool) way. My favorites of the Japanese titles are "Sleeping Princess in Dev...

Re: Are saiyans aboriginals of Planet Vegeta?
According to Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans and GT, the Saiyans originally came from another planet. Other than that I don't think it's ever been addressed. Based on their name, I would assume they would originally have come from a place called "Saiya". Whether that was another planet, or maybe some ...

Re: Why did FUNimation spell Freeza with an "i"?
"Kami" means God, but it's not the same God that we view in western culture, meaning that translating it could make it lose some meaning. The gods of Shinto may have subtle differences from many Western deities, but that doesn't change the fact that "kami" is used in Japanese as the general term fo...

Re: Why did FUNimation spell Freeza with an "i"?
I'm not sure if it was the same in the 1997 version, I'm assuming it would've been, but in DB Final Bout the dub spelling is used, but wasn't that released before the air date of the anime use of the spelling? Slightly before, yes. Final Bout was released in the US in July of 1997, while the dub ep...

Re: Why did FUNimation spell Freeza with an "i"?
You're assuming they knew anything about the Japanese language. Remember, this is back when the name Sasuke was pronounced suh-soo-kee in English dubs. It took Funimation quite a while to learn just the basic pronunciation, which is odd considering the president of the company was Japanese... But t...

Re: Why did FUNimation spell Freeza with an "i"?
I don't know a Freeza, only a Freezer, just as a Boo or a Saiyajin. And his name is Freezer. The katakana could be translated to Freezer, Freeza or Freeza but in the end on and the same word is meant with one and the same Pronounciation. In Japanese, the word "freezer" is spelled フリーザー (furiizaa). ...

Re: Sagas
Funimation's use (or overuse) of the term "saga" has no sway over my decision. If they had been correct in their use, I would use it too. However, as has been pointed out previously, they were incorrect, as Dragon Ball as a whole would be considered a saga. As for how I divide up the saga of Dragon ...

Re: Your #1 Kikuchi/Shuki/Nathan/Faulconer/Menza/+ tracks.
It's pretty much impossible to pick only one Kikuchi track. Although I'd seen the Funi dub on TV, I first got really into Dragon Ball after watching the Japanese version on DVD, so Kikuchi's music is fundamentally Dragon Ball for me. Kikuchi - M306, M309, M313, M1020, M1218, M1420 Kiyooka - Marugoto...

Satan vs. Little Trunks made me lose it the first time I saw it.
Also, Goku eating the clouds, and when Goku bites Freeza's tail. Such classic stupid moments.

Here's some stuff Toriyama's said in interviews regarding stuff he did and didn't plan out/think about in advance. Sources are linked above the excerpts: ( http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/adventure-special-toriyama-qa/ ) Interviewer: Who made the Dragon Balls themselves? Toriyama: Whoa! Now t...

Re: Your own personal canon?
I don't really think of Dragon Ball in terms of a singular canon or non-canon. What happened in the manga, happened in the manga. What happened in the anime, happened in the anime. When it comes to movies, or spinoffs like Jaco, I consider them as their own seperate entities (with their own "canons"...

Re: Looking for info on this bootleg set
To be more specific about the "Master Goten" thing, in Chinese, the characters for Muten (武天) and Goten (悟天) are both pronounced Wutian. Hence Wutian Laoshi (武天老師) becomes... Wutian Laoshi (悟天老師). Or, at the very least, whoever translated the Chinese subs into English new that one of the Wutians was...

Re: General Website Goofs/Errors
The Kanji Symbol Guide states that Chiaotzu is a Japanese approximation of Chinese Jiǎozi. However, this is incorrect. They're both Mandarin Chinese. Chiaotzu (although using proper romanization rules it should be Chiao-tzu with a hyphen) is Wade-Giles romanization, and Jiǎozi is Pinyin romanization...

When I was 14 I borrowed my friend's copy of Tree of Might (the first Funi release) and watched it subbed. It was the first time I saw any of Dragon Ball in Japanese.

Re: Ginyu Saga DVD singles question
I think the boxes were just different on the Ginyu discs. My copy of Assault looks exactly like that with the different font and it has the Movie 1 OP and the "censored" subtitles.
