Re: Meaning of Goku's name?

In Journey to the West the name was created for the Monkey King when he completed training under a Buddhist sage, who felt the monkey should have a Buddhist name. Wu/Go (悟) = englightenment, to understand, to perceive Kong/Kuu (空) = (in a Buddhist context) nothingness, void, emptiness, nonexistence,...

The first two seasons were syndicated; they weren't on a network.

Has Toriyama ever stated the origin of Kuririn's name in an interview?

I think it's probably common knowledge in this fandom that "Kuririn" is a combination of 栗 (kuri, "chestnut") and 少林 (Shaolin, or "Shourin" in Japanese). The "chestnut" being another example of Toriyama's propensity for food related names, and the rin/lin because Kuririn's design is inspired by Shao...

Re: The Pronunciation of "Whis"

I've always pronounced it like the English "whisky," but it doesn't bother me that they use "wheece" in the Funimation dub.

Re: Golden Cooler Idea/Question

Since "metallic" counts as a color in Dragon Ball (Sergeant Metallic) does that mean Metal Coola was the counterpart to Golden Freeza all along? Yeah, that's what I thought too! Although, I don't remember Cooler calling himself Metal-Cooler I don't remember if they use it in the movie but he's labe...

Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

Proper nouns aren't translated (or shouldn't be, anyway) and people are basically mixing titles with names. Obviously a proper name like "Son Goku" shouldn't be translated into "Grandchild Awakened to Vacuity" or anything like that. A title like "Turtle Hermit" or "God" isn't a name though. Calling...

Re: Is Movie 10 the new Movie 11?

Movie 4 has no redeemable qualities. The scene where Piccolo rips his ears off is more entertaining to me than a lot of parts of the other movies. It's so stupid and over the top that it makes me laugh every time. The Speedy dub of Movie 4 also has some of my favorite stupid dub lines ever. The Sun...

From what I remember, in the movie itself he says to Goku: "Once more. I can transform one more time than my brother."

Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

Just a minor correction, but his name is spelled 武天 ("Martial Heavens/ God ") rather than 無天. This renders a possible (literal) translation of Muten Roushi as "Divine Teacher of the Arts Martial" (for the added stylistic flavour in order to convey the nuance of the Japanese). You're right, I totall...

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names

Not really a big deal, but why does the dub spell Vegetto's name "Vegito"? There is no "i" in Kakarot or Vegeta that I know of. "Vegeta" is written "Bejīta" (ベジータ) in Japanese. We change the b, j, and i because it's a play on "vegetable." Same thing applies to Vegetto, which is wriiten Bejitto (ベジッ...

Re: Do you prefer the English movie titles or the Japanese o

English titles as they're easier to remember for the most part. And a lot of the Japanese titles are kinda weird in a way that Japan likes. Kinda like DB's sister show, "Asobi Ni Ikuyo" which translates into "Let's Come and Play" or something, hence being released stateside as "Cat Planet Cuties". ...

Re: Super's manga by Toyotarō

Can we assume that AGE refers to something other than year? Maybe decade or something? Is AGE ever used besides the guidebooks? Age comes directly from the manga: In Chapter 358, Trunks inspects Cell's time machine and says it came form "Age 788". This is the only reference to a specific year withi...

Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

"Demonic Light Screw." Same amount of syllables as Makankossapo at least. I think "Devil Drill Cannon" might have been a good choice for adapting the name. I think both of these would have been good choices for localizations. They're both incomplete translations, but as localizations they're fine. ...

Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

The dub of the original series was actually kind-of-sort-of decent when it came this. Most things that originated in DB were translated if it wasn't a "Kamehameha" example of gibberish(Zanzouken, Rogafufuken, Bukujutsu, Mafuuba), but then there were Z holdovers like "Tri-Beam" or the censored Drunk...

Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

But translating sometimes does not do any favors. Some of the names are basically puns which translating to another market like the US (just to use as an example)would not make any sense. Just like calling Vegeta "Vegetable" and Freeza "Freezer" (Freezer as the home/kitchen appliance, which is the ...

Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

How do you feel about a certain Dragon Ball Super fansub using "Venerable Grandmaster" for "Muten Rōshi"? "Venerable Master" I would be okay with, but a "grandmaster" is a master of chess so that's pretty weird to me. There's nothing wrong with translating and localizing names or titles (even thoug...

Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

As we all probably know, lots of characters in Dragon Ball have different translations of their names. Some of this is because of different localizations, or because translators don't know how to deal with the good portion of Chinese names in the series (Chinese to Japanese to English doesn't always...
