Re: Isn’t It In Toei’s/Funimation’s Legal Right to Use The Original Broadcast Audio on Future Releases?

I can't speak to what is or isn't Toei's right, but I can definitively say that FUNimation can't release anything without Toei's consent (which is part of the reason it took a while to get Toei to authorize the release of the North American Dragon Boxes--it was supposed to be a Japan-only thing). So...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 11; Still Unreleased

Ok, i just came back from Kamehacon, it was fun, and i got some interesting info. Saffron Henderon told me that she did Gohan in the Ocean Dub of Kai. Brian Dobson did not play Dr Gero, but he did participate in it in Minor Roles. Alistair Bell however, mentioned something interesting, he said that...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 11; Still Unreleased

We've had word from way back that a Calgary cast was involved to some degree. To what exact degree isn't clear (and likely never will be until we have a full cast list), but the common consensus seems to be that the producers gave the roles with high-level importance to Vancouver actors, and the rol...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 11; Still Unreleased

Regarding Saffron Henderson she heavily implied reprising Gohan after Z, which could only mean she played him in Kai, that would probably rule out Jillian Michaels too. If I were a betting man, I'd say that's probably what she meant too. That said, "Temporarily replaced but got to do lots more...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 11; Still Unreleased

No updates on the Ocean dub, but I couldn't help but notice that the Dragon Ball-centric convention, "Kamehacon," is happening in ten days...and the guest list is not only quite expansive, but includes a large number of Ocean alumni . So, if anybody is going and wants to ask some of the ac...

Re: Does the lack of diversity in sub and dub bother you?

Tbh, I'm not bothered by it as long as it fits However, I find it odd that Americans have this weird thing where they have a select group of actors (10 or 15) and that group plays every we single character of an animated show, in Latin America most of the time we have an individual actor play 1 cha...

Re: Furious voice actors

Oh, that's not nearly as true as it used to be. Lately, many in the localization industry--be it actors, translators, adapters, directors, engineers, and more--are calling for a raise in rates. Among actors in particular, there is a mass mobilization in the LA and NY markets towards unionizing as m...

Re: Any FUNi dubisms you still find yourself saying from time to time?

also "krillin" is bad anyway because it just totally destroys the pun, unless you want to argue that they tried to go with a krill pun, which i kind of doubt and isn't really a equivalent to his actually pun's orgins. Heh, I hear 'ya, and trust me, I'm not gonna pretend for one second tha...

Re: Furious voice actors

1) Toei could one day say, "No more paying humans to dub, we're just going to use an app to synthesize the Japanese voice actors in another language." You know that is very terrifying. I have worked as a live interpreter (like a protocol droid C3PO) and people would constantly joke sayuin...

Re: Any FUNi dubisms you still find yourself saying from time to time?

I still say...

"Say-in" instead of "Sai-yin."

"GOku instead of goKU."

"Krillin" instead of "Kuririn."

That said, I don't feel particularly bad about that last one because I was told that was an acceptable romanization of his name.

Re: Furious voice actors

Frist of all, I want to thank TheBlackPaladin for sharing his knowledge on the subject, I learned a lot. Second, I wanted to know your opinion but what I personally think is that AI voice synthesizer is OK as long as the voice actors get a percentage everytime it is used, probably cents, but it wou...

Re: Furious voice actors

It's not their voice. It sounds like their voice, and there have been sound-alikes and impressions since the begininng of entertainment. Heck, FUNi started out doing soundalikes for the previous dragonball crew. Technically, it is their voice. It's just not them using their voice, which presents a ...

Re: Furious voice actors

I think this is a trend that will happen more and more in the future and I bet new VA contracts are already including clauses that cover this thing. Non-union contracts are all over the place in terms of standards. Some are quite good, even better than union contracts, but many are not. So, whether...

Re: Furious voice actors

So, upon looking at the article you brought up, I see that Fakeyou is not an app where you can request voice actors to say certain things for a fee (which is fine, that's like what Cameo is over here), but rather, an artificial voice synthesizer. Apps like these are a huge topic of discussion in the...

Re: What will you call future Texas dubs?

Wait a minute, the whole Funimation brand is being phased out? Yup, the whole brand is gone. They even re-named the existing FUNimation recording studios to Crunchyroll studios (and built a brand new studio in addition to the existing one, also called Crunchyroll studios). That said, it doesn't mea...

Re: What will you call future Texas dubs?

I'll probably call them "Crunchyroll dubs." It'll be awkward for a short while, but then again, it was awkward for a short while to call this site "Kanzenshuu" as opposed to "Daizenshuu EX." The awkwardness quickly faded, though.

Re: Does the lack of diversity in sub and dub bother you?

The lack of diversity with the dub is really more of a holdover from an older era than anything else. Back when FUNimation started dubbing in Texas, pretty much nobody in the area had any experience with dubbing. Chris Sabat said that in the early days, when they called local talent agents to ask f...

Re: Does the lack of diversity in sub and dub bother you?

The Japanese version is justified in having Goku, Gohan, and Goten be voiced by Nozawa, although Bardock and Turles probably should've had different voices. I've always thought it would be interesting if either Bardock or Turles was voiced by Shigeru Chiba (the Japanese voice of Radditz), so that t...

Re: Source of Rumor that FUNi's Early Z Masters "Came From Mexico"

...also no. How did you come up with this strange story? Mario Castañeda does not ‘actually’ have a deep and bassy...?(wtf) voice. He’s between tenor and alto, the higher register for males, with a very unique soft timbre. With not an ounce of bass in it. His Goku voice is 100% his natural voice an...
