Re: The meaning of ''Shunkan Idou''

瞬間移動 (shunkan'idō) as a whole means "teleportation". You can translate it as 瞬間(shunkan/instantaneous) and 移動 (idō/movement), but why stop there? Why not 瞬 (shun/instant), 間 (kan/tele-), 移 (i/trans-), and 動 (dō/-ation)? Instant Teletransation . And in reverse, we could translate "teleportation", as ...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

No I meant it's common in manga and anime for character names to be written in Katakana instead of their original Hiragana or Kanji. So that basically it doesn't mean much that it's written differently, in terms of the intent. Again, the usage of Katakana for names is common, and it's not about for...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

For Makankosappo usually adapt it Demonic Piercing Death Cannon, for Gyarikku Ho, I usually go with Gyarlic Gun, where it’s still different but you can tell it came from the base word. Kaioh, the Galactic Overseer. Would call him the Galactic King but the character in Jaco/Super complicates that. U...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

It doesn't go against Toriyama's intentions at all. His intention is for the reader to recognize that the character's name is Oolong as in Oolong tea. Whether it's written Wulung/Wulong/Oolong doesn't matter in that regard. The usage of katakana versus kanji is common and isn't really a factor in t...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

The most recent style of Cantonese, Jyutping, actually romanizes it as jam caa , pronounced the same as the Yale yam cha . I suppose "Yumcha" would work just as well, since apparently "yum cha" is the popular spelling in the English speaking world. Similarly, "Oolong" is the popular English spellin...

To quote God himself:

"I serve as nothing more than a means to power up, and to contribute my vast wisdom."

and

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

Oof. I'd like to point out that I made a typo in my first post. It's Pu-erh , not Pu-ehr . Uhg, my eyes... Yeah I don't know where the Japanese wiki may have gotten that info, but the few Wade-Giles/Pinyin converters I have used all return wu and yin for both styles. And for what it's worth,...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

I thought "Oolong" and "Yumcha" were just anglicized forms of the original Mandarin/Cantonese words, not Wade-Giles romanizations. Are they? You know, it's VERY hard to find sources of Wade–Giles spellings... :/ Tho, I know the Japanese wikipedia page for 飲茶 says that "Yumcha" is the Wade–Giles spe...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

I still have no idea what this thread is supposed to be about. Also, moving this out of "In-Universe" because... well, while I don't quite understand what the point it, it's certainly not "In-Universe"...! "Sun Wukong/Wu-k'ung" is but one of several names given to the character over the course of t...

Re: Internationalized Japanese names?

As far as I know Freeza was always his real name, and Freezer... Well that one is the original name of a Pokemon we know as Articuno. Well, yes ; that's what I'm saying. The character フリーザ (Furīza) is Freeza , and the word (and pokemon) フリーザー (Furīzā) is Freezer . The character ベジータ (Bejīta) is Veg...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

As an addendum to my previous post, I'd like to point out that 餃子 Jiaozi is what most people spell as "Ciaotzu". The final letter -the I- is short, and sounds kinda like the I in "spit". Tho, if you're not familiar with Chinese accents, it tends to sound similar to a short U (as in "put"). At least,...

Re: Internationalized romanticized Japanese names?

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but... Do you mean like how each language Latinizes it in their own way? Cuz, I think for the most part, the names are the same so long as they aren't purposefully changed or misunderstood (which was probably only FUNi for the most part). I don't really have...

Re: Poll about your preferences (manga, anime, games, music...)

I would prefer tankōbon-sized comics rather than the size Viz uses. Viz's comics are DVD-sized, but I think the tankōbons are BD sized. Right? Anyway, for how thin they are, I always thot the smaller size of the Japanese comics was better. Plus, it IS a Japanese comic, so why not leave 'em all the s...

Re: The original DB Manga and anime adaptations don’t reflect their era much

The art style is very 80s. Well, at least the part of the comic written in and around the 80s. It kinda starts fading away during the Saiyan arc in 1988 till it reaches full-on pointyness.

Re: People who have managed to have extremely low contact with the manga.

Hah! I've never even SEEN all of Dragon Ball. Well, the Z portion, I mean. At least, not in Japanese. I got up to the Majin-Boo arc of the animation. As for the comics, tho, I think I only got to... maybe the Demon King Piccolo arc. And I own it all , too. Haha. But my reason is that I'm trying to f...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

Could "Altered humans" or "Altered beings" be a substitute for Jinzoningen? With Goku, would it be prononced "Go(pronounced like the Japanese say "go") - Kuu"? That's how I usually say it, but I'm unsure. Saying to myself to get the hang of it, so the "nah" would be pronounced a at the same speed a...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

First syllable is still emphasised as Scott says it (possibly they emphasise the second syllable in the dub itself, we don't know), but much like Kaioken, they actually use the correct sounds; "Nah" as in the English word "Nah", with an Ah sound as in "Ah yes," or "Car" without the C; the common mi...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

Btw, is it "Nah(ar)-mek" or "Naw-mek"? I tried doing research but it was very confusing, still confused on how to put emphasis on the "mek". I checked the manga, Viz version, and Trunks did clarify that they were Cyborgs, after calling them Androids, but I don't think it was corrected any further. ...

DNA, perhaps you typoed, but you have it listed that the first VHS came out before the game. Also, I don’t know if that even matters. They were clearly made at the same time. It probably IS most likely that Ishikawa was the composer for the game, and that his music got chiptuned by someone else for ...

Re: Could Launch and Nameless Namekian be two souls in one body?

I think when the nameless son of Katats split his body and soul into two, the two souls remain as separate in death as they are in life. Same with the versions of Majin-Boo . However, Lunch is likely just one soul with split personality disorder, with a little cartoonish flair to exaggerate the diff...
