My feeling currently is that Kinnikuman (space wrestling tournaments) and Urusei Yatsura (space comedy) had the greatest influences on the DB manga.

That is one interpretation of it. And a valid one, too.

And most of what happened after this, with the exception of Uub as an apprentice, feels like the show's power celling issues were starting to affect the story IMO.

I think only the ones dictated by prophecy (Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan God) can make an impact like that.
