Re: Barry Watson vs Yukio Nagasaki - who "damaged" series mo

Translation drift. Certain terms that transfer well from Japanese to Mexican Spanish are bound to get mangled when translating the translation to English.

Re: Manga UK picks up Dragon Ball

When you watch your Madman sets do you notice ant ghosting in it? I hear these sets suffered from ghosting from the NTSC to PAL conversation. That's pretty much a standard feature of NTSC-to-PAL transfers, as 30 NTSC frames/second get mashed into 25 PAL frames/second. The effect is really only heav...

Re: Barry Watson vs Yukio Nagasaki - who "damaged" series mo

The fact that DBZ season 3 had such a horrendously green cast should tell you that DBZ was popular in spite of the changes. which I still don't understand when they had Steve Simmons doing subtitle work He didn't start until WELL after they began production. Regardless, I still can't believe FUNi c...

Re: Kai Episode 99 (06 April 2014)

Honestly, I feel like that's just a result of the low bitrate encodes. Each Kai episode on the Blu-rays came to ~3GB an episode whereas this is ~600MB. That's a huge difference so I don't think it's quite fair to judge the clarity of the product until the official release. I still don't have the Bl...

Re: Kai Episode 99 (06 April 2014)

It's interesting to see how much just a little colour correction makes to the overall quality of the footage. http://i.imgur.com/tJsEoD3.jpg Apologies for the lazy screenshot. Funny how much better this simple balancing looks. How does the rest of the episode fare with these kinds of adjustments? T...

Re: the footage rereleased and remastered

Th-They've been doing that stuff since like 2006 or 2007, dude. Remember the Brick sets? YuYu Hakusho? Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood? All these have lacked japanese credits and alternate angles. Wasn't the change in policy announced after Funimation said something to the effect that adding extra ...

Re: New Animation VS Old Animation

One would kind of expect that the Timing Directors have some level of experience as actual animators, but I think the role's presence is a bit insulting. The key animators at the South Korean studios are the ones doing the actual animation, they ought to be deciding and playing with the animation. ...

Re: Dragon Ball,Z,GT censorship thread

What astonishes me is that when Yamcha is in his dazed "not Dragon Balls" stupor after getting a good look at Bulma's breasteses, his eyes have nipples for pupils even on the TV version.

Re: New Animation VS Old Animation

EDIT: I forgot to mention this is my previous post, but a higher number of drawings is not the only thing that matters. After all, American cartoons usually have 10,000+ drawings an episode but the timing of the animation and other elements are bad. When people praise an animator, like Nakamura Yut...

Re: Dumb things you throught when you were a Noob to Dragon

I took the dub at face value (which was a big mistake), though the biggest "Huh?" was figuring out that Freeza was a guy. I held no illusions that what I was seeing was edited for TV, since the made-on-video bits of censorship (HFIL, the blue beer, and especially the time-compressed pannin...

Re: Why does FUNimation like to over saturate footage?

It's because oversaturation has a habit of making colors more vivid, which has the effect of making older footage look newer to the untrained eye. Sharper and brighter is the aim in these remastering projects, and all the better if you can hide your shoddy work with a deceptively excellent looking s...

Re: New Animation VS Old Animation

Sometimes a lack of cleanup can result in rougher looking animation. Xerography was a dirty word to many (including Walt Disney himself) in the '60s and '70s because it had a habit of picking up rougher edges in the animation that the ink and paint girls were trained to ignore when they traced the p...

Re: New Animation VS Old Animation

Redrawn/retraced animation will always look terrible because a) it's a copy of someone else's previous work, and b) done at with a comparatively lower budget by a comparatively less-skilled animator (or worse, a computer). Granted, it won't look as hideous nowadays as the awful hand-redrawn coloriza...

Re: How Did Funimation Get Away With This?

It's not exactly common for a remastering studio to get credit for their work in America unless it's say, Lowry Digital, who have famously restored a number of high-profile films in addition to advancing a lot of the technology behind the art of film restoration. Furthermore, Pony Canyon is mostly a...

Re: The difference of "Music by" and "Music Produced by"?

And here's another wrinkle in the credits for the Saban-produced dub: http://www.noamkaniel.com/dessin-anime/80s/ Noam Kaniel is one of the lesser known musicians that Haim Saban has employed (and exploited) for years, and he's claiming to have provided some of the music for DBZ (it seems to be lump...

Like you can watch Star Trek and a new alien species will show up and say you have 1 hour to leave xlicbz space or we will blast you into 10,000 pieces.
