Re: Hardcore wuxia fans, what are the biggest similarities and differences between the genre and Dragon Ball?

As a DB fan from Japan, I'm against the idea of Wuxia directly influencing Toriyama. 99% of the users here seem to be from the Western world and have very limited knowledge about the cultures in East Asia, so they tend to connect whatever from China or Hong Kong they find similar with Dragon Ball so...

They're really hard to catch even for native Japanese speakers like me, but at least I can hear 祝え今宵 (Iwae koyoi, celebrate tonight) in the beginning.

Re: What's the concensus on dubs replacing sound effects?

Personally I think it removes the exact tone and "spice" of the show, similar to when the music is switched out, particularly when generic stock sound effects are used. That's literally what Toei themselves did with Super and that's exactly why I hate it with passion. Edit: Oh I didn't no...

Re: I feel like the slow pacing for DBZ in the anime and filler works to its advantage

The stupid, pointless, or cheesy filler aside, the slow pacing of the series at least brought one positive effect: They heavily relied on the music to keep the tension in slow-paced scenes, which made the Kikuchi score very memorable and iconic as a result.

Re: Why Kai 1.0's Kikuchi Score was so limited.

I believe that Toei actually had budget to digitalize the missing Kikuchi tracks, but not time for it, so they hadn't any other choice but get stuck to the stereo tracks. No, they had already run out of the budget at the time. I directly asked one of the staff members of Kai on Facebook and he conf...

Re: Can someone explain to me this score removal in the "Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle" dubs?

They removed these tracks because they contain singing in Japanese. A lot of dubs around the world avoided these particular tracks, too. You're from Brazil, right? Check out the PT-BR dub of DBZ episode 28. M424EXT is muted when Piccolo dies. It's the same as the insert songs: They don't want to let...

Re: For spanish speaking people, do male characters names ending with "a" seem weird?

I've never heard of any Spanish anime dubs whose character names are changed for the sake of gender suffixes. Such kind of name changes are relatively rare even when it comes to the languages with noun case inflection, but the Lithuanian version is one of the few exceptions: Its almost all character...

Re: Did FUNimation continue UUC production?

These might be like those Latin American DVD singles that looked like Ultimate Uncut, but the video was Orange Bricks. I've got two volumes of that release and no, these are not. By the way, until now, I never noticed that the texts on the covers used Funi's character names instead of the Latin Ame...

Re: GT Special question

Around the mid-'80s, Toei introduced their new film transfer system named "Fine Nega Video System" (hereinafter called FNVS) which transfers negative film masters directly to videotapes. A lot of anime series and films including DBZ movies were transferred with this system for home video r...

Re: Was GT a failure ?

Well, according to Kei, GT DVDs sold better than OG DB and Z in Japan , so evidently it was a series that was looked upon more favorably over time than it was during it's initial run on Fuji TV. I think the Dragon Box GT sold well because GT is the only series you can't read in the manga format. Th...

Re: Myth - "Funimation didn't acquire film masters of DBZ until 2008"

Speaking of the change in video quality in the original DB, my guess is that the early episodes were transferred when the BLT dub was produced, and the rest was done later, maybe in a cheaper way. Frankly this is blowing my mind. I assumed the guy at the station just popped in a videotape with the p...

Re: Myth - "Funimation didn't acquire film masters of DBZ until 2008"

Excuse my ignorance: kei you’ve shown that film reels were used for airings until 2000 or so. ... What exactly would a TV station do with that film reel? I assumed they were sending video tapes around, since TV is video. The status of the film is written in next to each airdate, so I think they wer...

Re: Myth - "Funimation didn't acquire film masters of DBZ until 2008"

So you have some of the actual film that the rebroadcast tapes were transferred from? Does your film happen to have the same kind of tinting that the rebroadcast footage has? I was thinking that the rebroadcast footage looked very tinted because of the film fading, so I'm curious to see if your fil...

When I see a screenshot comparison between this version and the Level Set or the Season Blu-rays, there always seems to be a shift in color towards red. I don't even want to think of this possibility, but I can't help but imagine that they did it with an intention to make it look "authentic&quo...

Re: Myth - "Funimation didn't acquire film masters of DBZ until 2008"

I've never heard of this myth and I always thought that they've got their own film masters from the beginning. The reason is simple: From what I know, Toei had never provided any videotape masters to foreign countries when it comes to the TV series of DB and DBZ until they produced the DigiBeta mast...
