Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"
How can I consider any of that to be some kind of "artistic vision" when it's clear Toriyama never wanted to do any of these things in the first place? Because, even though he originally "did not want to do any of those things", he still ultimately contributed to those things. H...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"
Nobody takes Dragon Ball beyond Toriyama because their hands are tied by executive and Toriyama meddling. When you create an environment where creativity is artificially stifiled to try and match the needs of executives and Toriyama, of course you're going to wind up in positions where the artistic...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"
I'm kind of repeating myself here, but I really don't see the point in placing some kind of 'canon' on a pedastool, when it completely ignores whether a work of art is good . I think it's important that we keep that in mind, because it isn't some nebulous idea of 'canon' that is the connective tissu...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"
Canon is no reason to experience a work of art. Canon is no reason to out a work of art in a pedastool. There's nothing fun—and entirely too much importance given to—worrying about silliness like 'canon'. Find a work of art that you enjoy and enjoy it for that.

So... according to this, Toriyama underwent surgery last month due to a brain tumor.
Oh man...

Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.
Speaking as someone who has written 125,000 words of her own original novel since May 2023, I can confirm that authors like the freedom that comes with writing original works—even if they still borrow elements from other works. That's just how art is made. We make art to satisfy our needs, after all...

Re: Dragon Ball Going to the Public Domain When!?
I believe in Japan a work enters public domain seventy (70) years after the death of the author.
Oy vey, what a weird conversation to be having so soon after his death. :/

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator
The problem has lied in that Dragon Ball has always been a work of a series creator who didn't really have a dedicated passion for writing, and corporate suits. It's rare that it has been allowed a moment to be told by a creator unencumbered by something . I think that Nagamine's Movie #20 was the c...

Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator
Now that I've had some time to process Toriyama's passing, I do have some concerns about the future. My suspicion is that Iyoku Akio will chase the ambulance until the cows come home—which is to say, I think he'll want to keep franchising the series out, which was the reason he formed Capsule Corp T...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Toriyama owned Dragon Ball and as creator was the ultimate authority figure. If I had to guess, one of his kids will become the steward of the franchise from here on out.
That being said, I don't really think that this is the time for this conversation.

Hey, welcome back! Sad it had to be under these circumstances.
But yeah, if there's an afterlife, I hope Toriyama fiddling with his model kits right now.

Re: Your watching experience on Toonami
Ooh, yeah, I also watched the Afterlife Tournament arc on The International Channel and some of the Majin Buu arc. It was so surreal, because my actual first exposure was a shitty fansub download of the episode where Trunks fights that one dipshit in the Tenka-ichi Budoukai that I downloaded via Nap...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 102 - Official Discussion Thread
Well, no, I'm talking about what's necessary. Dragon Ball is a complete story. Nothing in Super was/is necessary; it's effectively a side-story taking place during a timeskip in Dragon Ball's story. It is the Optional Comedic Sequel™. It going on longer than the original run (or having someone's ab...

Re: Your watching experience on Toonami
I recall in my days as a younger girl first coming across Dragon Ball Z when it was airing on Toonami in either October or November of 1998. I specifically remember the first episode I watched being the one where Vegeta was killing the Namekians with the Reigun from Yuu Yuu Hakusho . At the time I w...

Copyright law, as is the way with most if not all laws, exists to protect the wealthiest above all else. Yamamoto Kenji's crime wasn't harming the average Jane, it was 'harming' those with more money than him, and for that he was judged and excommunicated.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 102 - Official Discussion Thread
The major issue being, I think, is that Toriyama is obssessed with setting up rules for handicapping himself with the types of stories he'll tell, and Toyo-tarou, Victory Uchida, and anyone else involved with the franchise, refuses to actually think about breaking those rules. Like, literally, anyon...
