Re: Why is Piccolo Considered "The Black Guy"?

[ Most of those are horrible stereotypes, though. Which I'm not going to hold against Toriyama too much. Japan was very late, and still is, in some sense, in catching up to peer countries in terms of racial sensitivity, being very homogeneous itself. Though they received those images, the problemat...

Re: Biggest exageration by fans?

GT is no longer in the mainline canon, its now like the movies. You can consider it canon if you wish, but its more like an alternate universe.

Re: Why is Piccolo Considered "The Black Guy"?

I think its telling for a Japanese anime to include so many different races. You have Indians with Nam, Native Americans with Uppa and Bora, you have Russians with Suno and her family, etc. I think Toriyama did a good job in putting different races of people in the show, something most anime doesn't...

Re: Was DBZ good because Goku got very little screentime?

With the exception of Goku Vs. Freeza and the later half of the Majin Buu saga....DBZ was essentially Gohan's story, not Goku's. Gohan gets far more screentime in every saga than Goku. Even when Goku is fighting Vegeta or Freeza...Gohan is literally always shown or thinking about what's going on. Th...

Re: Why is Piccolo Considerd "The Black Guy"?

I never once thought Chris Sabat's Piccolo "sounds black" or whatever that means.

If anything Sabat does a good African-native accent with Mr. Popo and Commander Black of the Red Ribbon army.

Does anyone feel like they "grew up" along with Gohan?

I imagine Japanese fans felt this way about Goku, but for dub fans or anyone who started watching DBZ before Dragonball, did you feel this way? Gohan was only 4 years old when DBZ started, and I imagine most of us were young kids when we first watched DBZ too. As Gohan was aging throughout the serie...

Re: Why is Piccolo Considerd "The Black Guy"?

Do people really see the cast as "white?" Aren't they all, you know...Japanese?

I think Bulma, Android 18, and Mr. Satan are some of the few characters who are likely "white" and not Asian.

Re: Favourite Overlooked Moments?

Launch's filler scenes in DBZ were fantastic. It really puts into perspective why she wasn't at Roshi's house anymore and the way she tried to follow Tien up Korin's tower was hilarious. I especially liked seeing Uppa and Bora again too. Launch's last scene of getting drunk alone in a bar has such d...

Re: Why is Piccolo Considerd "The Black Guy"?

This topic is rather shady because its like saying all Nameks are black.

Do you consider Kami to be black? Dende? King Piccolo? All the other Nameks? Why should Piccolo be considered black and not his entire race?

Re: The popularity of Freeza and catalyst for future villain

I can't believe we're seriously arguing that Darth Vader isn't the main and most iconic villain of Star Wars. Doesn't matter that he was Emperor Palpatine's puppet either. He's the main villain of the original trilogy. He also spent 20 something years between the end of Episode 3 and the start of Ep...

Re: What is your Franchise Head-Canon?

Movie 8 also can't fit because the whole Earth was in panic because of the fear of Doomsday. Chi Chi takes Goku for a interview when that could never happen in the anime or manga. Goku and Gohan are seen in their base forms instead of their FPSSj forms. Cell is nowhere to be mention or seen in the ...

Re: What's Your Favorite Battle Background?

Its kind of ironic the movies have the best battlefields of the series as opposed to the main series. Some highlights: - Garlic Jr's gothic castle - The arctic battlefield in Movie 7 (my favorite because I love ice/snow/arctic areas in videogames) - The Bojack movie's tournament and city - Movie 8 o...

Re: The popularity of Freeza and catalyst for future villain

Except Darth Vader was never the ultimate villain of Star Wars. Darth Vader is far more iconic than Emperor Palpatine, and when most people think of the main villain of Star Wars they think of Darth Vader. No matter what happens in the Star Wars comics, the prequels, or the upcoming movies, Darth V...

Re: What is your Franchise Head-Canon?

In Movie 9 Gohan doesn't even transform into a SSJ2 until Goku tells him to. He fights and loses as a regular Super Saiyan. It reminds me how in the Cooler movie Goku fought in his base form until he lost and didn't power up to Super Saiyan until the end. So why do people accept Gohan not transformi...

Re: Were the Ginyu Force killed too early?

I thought it was amusing Jeice got to survive for awhile and wasn't killed right away. I think their popularity is why TOEI brought them back for filler on King Kai's planet and why Ginyu is returning in Super.

I also like how everytime something bad happens to Goku, Master Roshi is able to sense it. When Planet Namek exploded in space, Master Roshi is sitting there talking to Yajirobe about how he thinks something bad happened. When Goku transports Cell to King Kai's planet and he dies, they immediately c...

Re: What's Your Favorite Battle Background?

The ice battlefield from Movie 7 was fantastic. I never realized how little they battle in an arctic setting with all ice and water.

I loved that they fought Super Android 13 and the other androids in the arctic. They really need to include more battles in an "ice or snow" type battlefield.

Re: The popularity of Freeza and catalyst for future villain

Because for all intents and purposes, Freeza IS the ultimate villain of the series. No matter how many future villains they bring in, no matter how strong or powerful they are, Freeza will always be the most memorable and iconic. Freeza is to DBZ what Darth Vader is to Star Wars, what The Joker is t...

DBZ, along with Pokemon and Sailor Moon, was a lot of 90's kids first exposure to anime.
