Re: Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

How do you feel about a certain Dragon Ball Super fansub using "Venerable Grandmaster" for "Muten Rōshi"? "Venerable Master" I would be okay with, but a "grandmaster" is a master of chess so that's pretty weird to me. There's nothing wrong with translating an...

Which translations do you prefer for characters' names?

As we all probably know, lots of characters in Dragon Ball have different translations of their names. Some of this is because of different localizations, or because translators don't know how to deal with the good portion of Chinese names in the series (Chinese to Japanese to English doesn't always...

Re: Do you prefer the English movie titles or the Japanese o

At the end of the day, I guess I'm just happy that even Toei seems to have moved away from that style of naming, at least for the movies, if Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' are any indication. Kai and Super both used/are using the longer episode titles though, but I guess for a show proper, it'...

Re: Do you prefer the English movie titles or the Japanese o

Just as KameRule said, it wouldn't have appealed to American fans. Casual fans over here just aren't used to the "two sentence" title structure, and they would have probably just laughed at the title rather than watched the movie. So had they kept the two-line title format in the series a...

Re: Do you prefer the English movie titles or the Japanese o

Japanese titles are blatant spoilers. Eng titles can be cool. Fusion Reborn, Wrath of Dragon etc "Fusion Reborn" is basically a direct translation of part of the Japanese title (復活のフュージョン!!悟空とベジータ "The Reborn Fusion!! Goku and Vegeta"). Also, "Fusion Reborn" is just as...

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names

I've had a hunch for awhile that the dub names for Soukidan and Genki Dama were probably switched or something. If you took the dub names "Spirit Bomb" and "Spirit Ball" and applied them to the opposite attacks, they're not quite perfect translations, but you can see what they're...

Re: Do you prefer the English movie titles or the Japanese o

Obviously I prefer the AB Group and Speedy titles like "Super Battle in the World" and "Super Guy in the Galaxy." 8) Honestly, though, I don't really care. Being a fan of the Godzilla movies, I'm used to movies having several different titles just in the English speaking world al...

Re: Dragon Ball Animax dub

Very likely. Tho, Toei seems to be where we got all the dub names from. The names below are from the episode titles (17~36) that Toei gave FUNi. I don't know what names were used in the Malaysian English dub, tho. Shenron, T i en Shinhan, Chiaotzu, Nimbus Cloud, Kami, Krillin. Depended on the movie...

Re: Dragon Ball franchise in Africa

According to Kei's site, African countries that showed Dragon Ball were: Algeria (Arabic dub), Uganda (one of the English dubs), Egypt (Arabic dub), Ivory Coast (French AB Groupe dub), Sudan (Arabic dub), Senegal (French AB Groupe dub), Tunisia (Arabic dub), Niger (French AB Group dub), Burkina Faso...

Re: Why weren't King Piccolo's off-springs Nameks?

I never fully understood this. His backstory was retconned in the Saiyan arc, yet for some reason all of his victims before that never went to the afterlife. Raditz was the only one up until that point whose soul went to Enma and I don't understand that either. How exactly is he a demonic Namekian?...

Re: Dub consistency, or no dub consistency. That is the ques

My preferred way of viewing the series is in Japanese, but I also enjoy watching various dubs because I enjoy having a variety of ways to experience the same stories, although I have my preferences. For the first 60 or so episodes (Japanese ep count), I prefer the first Funi dub with the Ocean actor...

Re: Will VIZ ever retranslate the manga?

I've seen it spelled "Cacarrot/Cacarrotto" on doujins before. I like spelling it Kakarrotto though, and I do cite Viz for why I do that. I don't like to spell it with a "c" since in Japanese the "ca" in carrot is written "kya" (kyarotto), and Kakarrot with &q...

Re: Biggest exageration by fans?

Example: Whis' 3-second time reverse is a "Deus Ex Machina". The series showcases some incredible mystic powers. If Whis' ability is a Deus Ex Machina, then you'd have to include many other powers like Goku's teleportation or senzu beans or the Potara. A true Deus Ex Machina is an unexpec...

Re: Narmy scenes

I can't use it, i don't like the term. Me either. I don't understand why TV Tropes had to invent this term when everyone else in the English speaking world already has a perfectly fine way to describe this phenomenon: "unintentionally funny." One scene that never fails to crack me up is i...

Re: Biggest exageration by fans?

I wouldn't say this is the biggest exaggeration, but fans tend to exaggerate how bad the pronunciations are when they quote the Speedy dub. Obviously they mispronounce things ("we shall wander shellfish-ly in the universe"), but what is point of writing stuff like "Saiyuh Peepul?"...

Re: What is your Franchise Head-Canon?

Movie 5 is set right after Goku meets Future Trunks Not really. When movie 5 came out, the manga was right at the part where Goku comes out of Ginyu's pod wearing the alien clothes. The movie was obviously written and planned long before that, hence Goku not being able to transform into a Super Sai...

Re: Why is Piccolo Considered "The Black Guy"?

Uppa and Bora want to defend their land from strangers like Tao (who is very Japanese), and other invaders. Tao Baibai isn't "very Japanese," though. He wears Qing Dynasty inspired clothes, and wears a pony tail, a reference to the queue that Chinese men were required to wear under Manchu...
