Dragon Ball is so appealing that even if it gets a bad quality translation, an awful dub, filler that goes on for days, an unplayable game, people want it, they come back for more! I bet even Toriyama is confused by it.

I'd say for a beginner the Viz release of the manga is fine, and if you already own the DVDs I'd say the season sets are "enough" since they have the Japanese audio and subtitles you should be using, but for figures and stuff I'd say look for stuff you like! I'm mainly a collector of books...
