Re: Problem #472 with the Dragon Boxes - DNR
I’m not understanding why the Dragon Box digital masters would exist as a telecine, 3:2 pulldown interlaced, since the target format was always progressive scan DVD. I'm referring to the film scan process as a telecine but in any case back in 2002 or whenever they did the remaster, I'm sure digital...

Re: Problem #472 with the Dragon Boxes - DNR
Reviving this dead thread cause i just want to mention: I'm 99% sure the ghosting isnt a product of DNR rather its caused by the telecine being stored in tape. Hunter x Hunter suffers from the same ghosting in dark scenes and it absolutely received no DNR whatsoever, they just took the broadcast tap...

Manos Venieris, the Greek voice of Goku in the first 65 episodes of DBZ, passed away at the age of 73. https://www.facebook.com/MariaMponikou/posts/1020418061756687 Manos Venieris had also voiced Yamcha, Master Roshi and many other characters from DB and DBZ. There's already an active discussion about this viewtopic.php?f=7&t=45347 here and yeah all things point to it being the same remaster 30th anni used.

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release
It says on amazon that it's a limited release steelbook edition, so you'll probably have to wait for a regular release sometime later, again They're going to milk this for all its worth, aren't they ? If it gets a standard release after this hopefully it replaces the 16:9 Blu-rays and that's kind o...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular
Is there good footage of Dragonball running on 35mm? Because those images are incredible. I always wondered why those images and more looked so incredible in my daizenshuus. Toei shot their promotional shots in 35mm film when dragon ball was being in production. Most of what people are calling cel ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release
I wouldnt 100% trust toei on a competent remaster tbh. The movies blurays were questionable, with a couple having funimation tier DNR and the dragon quest remaster although with great colours, also has a lot of DNR.

Story aside, for me the soundtrack is the highlight of Blue section. Those big band brass Bond songs are amazing!TrunksTrevelyan0064 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 04, 2020 6:03 am Shout-out to the James Bond-esque Kikuchi tracks that play during the General Blue section, as I love them and they automatically started playing in my head as I wrote this.

Ah yes, one more reason/excuse for toei to never do a proper HD remaster of the old DB

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release
The Dragon Boxes most definitely had both DNR and sharpening, but it was applied tastefully. I dont think the dragonboxes had dnr, rather they were hit with the natural bandwidth limitations of the mpeg2 on dvd format. Also kinda unrelated, but i feel as toei may have fucked the colours themselves ...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular
Man their scanner must be really bad, the color reproduction is atrocious. Considering they have to convert the negative colours into positive, i think thats just toei being incompetent at colors as usual why do you think these look different? https://i.imgur.com/H4mBwIn.png https://i.imgur.com/GDw...

If you scroll down toei's twitter you can find a lot of these shots. It gives you a pretty good idea of what the show might have looked if it was shot on 35mm https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Eak-vXmUEAAzBBJ?format=jpg&name=4096x4096 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EX7IYKvUYAAIQYE?format=jpg&name=40...

Thats how toei shot their promo shots. Its easy to spot cause of the very fine grain of 35mm film they use. 16mm film would have been a lot noisier

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular
Tenshinhan vs Yamcha looks more like I would expect: using a variety of lines widths and pressures, with rough boundaries between cels. Either it's just the case that many episodes were animated with invariable fat lines, or some of these have been inconsistently "touched up"; perhaps car...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular
I like the DB ones but the Z ones just look like the old singles, right down to the tint and purple shirt. Yeah, it's clearly just a hue shift (towards green. Look at the green hue of Krillin's dougi). That's not how the color correction is done with Dragon Box footage. Yea i did overdo it with the...

Re: Was Dragon Ball mastered at 6500K?
That's because they have to actually work for their sales, Toei and other big companies rely on brand recognition to sell their product. That's not to say every big company doesn't care about their reputation, but Toei unfortunately isn't exactly one of them. Yeah, and I mean I understand the posit...
