Re: Soundtrack glitches on UK orange brick DVDs

Avoiding authoring the discs themselves would certainly have been a factor, as (according to Manga's social media at the time) it would made up a big chunk of a UK releases' costs when it was needed. Localising the Dragon Boxes would have meant creating new English PAL masters of them. As per usual,...

Re: Dragon Ball GT DVD singles vs The Complete Series?

I would expect the Madman versions to be worse than Funi's if they're from the same source, as until the late '00s they often used interlaced standards conversions. Assuming Manga used Madmans "Remastered" GT sets, they're progressive-scan with PAL speedup and dodgey pitch correction ( htt...

Re: Which releases have dolbly surround 5.1 and are possible to extra bgm + sfx from?

I get why it wouldn't be a priority. The 5.1 upmixes are an improvement over stereo, but they're not exactly a revelation to listen to. It's just the the existing mono/stereo effects track being panned forward and backwards, with occasional filtering and sampling for the rear channels. I'm pretty su...

Re: Which releases have dolbly surround 5.1 and are possible to extra bgm + sfx from?

I think all of Funi's DVD/BD releases from the "remastered" range onward have 5.1 mixes. The only exception I can think of is DB Movie 2's mix just being identical mono tracks from all the speakers. The dialogue is generally only included on the centre channel, so you just remove that and ...

Re: Looking for Pioneer subtitles

Subtitle Edit has an OCR feature for DVD/BD subs, though I've found it really struggles with certain typesetting in DVD resolution: ( https://nikse.dk/SubtitleEdit/ ). You could also use MakeMKV and then MKVExtract to rip the subtitles without converting them, but I don't think you'd be able to edit...

I'm just saying that, for a lot of people, 10% HD followed by 90% SD is better than 100% SD. It doesn't have to be all or nothing and there probably won't be a better release for the foreseeable future.

Re: Level sets back in stock on Amazon

If you own all the Dragon Boxes you literally have no reason to buy the series again. If you own the complete level sets , congrats, you’re just gonna have to rebuy the exact same episodes just to own an additional 4 episodes. That's not my point. If you bought the DBoxes at the time, and then boug...

Or you want each episode in the highest quality available and prefer the Dragon Boxes to the extremely compromised Season sets.

Re: The oddest pieces of merch you have ever seen.

A few years ago I bought a cheap CD on eBay that was just listed as "DragonBallZ" with no product image. When it arrived it turned out to be a compilation release from the Netherlands called Dragon Ball Z: The Best In Dance & Trance . I guess it's not that strange, as far as "slap...

Re: Missing Frames in Japanese Dragon Boxes?

NTSC-J only applied to analog and not digital. I've played Japanese-market DVDs on American equipment and they often don't look much different from American releases of the same thing. Even if it's no longer necessary, it could be that Funi have simply never removed the 'change analogue black level...

Re: Funimation buys MangaUK

I'm a little surprised, as Manga still seemed to act as an separate entity after Sony bought them. I wouldn't have thought this'll affect Dragon Ball though, as they've been using Funimation's discs for almost all their releases anyway. Of course, the re-brand might be a first step in the US side ta...

Re: Are there "Dragon Box" styled releases for other series?

One Piece, Naruto and Bleach were all animated digitally and released after DVD had been established, so the Dragon Boxes' two main selling points (bundling everything together and remastering the episodes) wouldn't really apply.

Re: Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Dragonball

Evolution is not on Disney+ where I am (USA). Am I missing something? It was added when the "Star" brand launched, which is their way of adding acquired/Hulu/non-family content to D+ outside of the USA. Has the 20th Century brand appeared on any new Dragon Ball since Disney bought them? D...

Madman's Australian sets were the same Yamamoto/Kikuchi mix as the UK ones, weren't they? Those would still be an option for region B.

Does it look like this screencap from the 1994 dub? https://i.slow.pics/wyNKoToM.png Those are tape marks - physical damage where they've spliced two pieces of film together. They digitally erased these for the Dragon Boxes and Levels and (presumably) zoomed in the "Blue Bricks" as a zero-...

Re: 4:3 Steelbooks - Inconsistent Subtitles?

They've been alternating between English and Romaji since at least the the Level 1.1 Blu-ray. It looks like Super's are only English, but TPTB have been much more strict about subtitles since Super began. I 'spose it makes sense when you consider that the Japanese version had the song lyrics subtitl...

Some of the "remastered" Z movie DVDs have both dub options in 5.1, as does the GT TV special, so I'd say that it's probably not a space issue.

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

It's weird now because not only does Kai exist but also Super, and some people will watch the old DBZ dub and go directly to Super Even for the dub there was a 14 year gap between Z and Super, so I think most viewers would expect inconsistencies like that, particularly as they'd also see a switch f...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

The "remastered" DBZ dub does its job, in terms of fixing major inconsistencies like actors changing mid-run, right? Either way, if anything needs re-dubbing it's DB movies 2/3. Those really should have been given a new dub with their "remasters"; even with movie 4 unchanged ther...

Re: DBZ Syndication era Affiliate Promos.

Interesting that there are different variations of the '95 dub; I'd assumed it'd aired a handful of times and then quickly disappeared. I wonder if they started with episode-specific ending footage, gave up for a generic montage and then replaced the old ones for consistency.
