Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Super won't have the impact the original DB made not because of any perceived or real lack of quality, but because of the very simple fact that Super came into a world where DB already existed and has inspired numerous other stories and spawned a lot of imitators. How many revivals can you point to...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

To necro one of my old posts here... Part of the reason why I'm pretty damn certain that Super will never reach the cultural impact that Z had is due to a number reason. Most of which is that Super is an uninspired sequel that leans heavily on regurgitating its past to keep the brand going. But more...

Re: Dub-fans, was there an adjustment period for you when Goku started to be portrayed correctly in DBS?

Perhaps but this is hardly what I would call a substantive criticism of Super as a whole. This thread started because the OP rightfully stated that Super's dub portrayed Goku closer to his actual character as created by Toriyama instead of the superhero he was portrayed as in the DBZ dub. Subsequen...

Re: Asian characters in Dragon Ball

Bulma is from the West of Mount Paozu (which is suppose to be somewhere in China), she’s a gun nut (or was that kinda got dropped after that one gag in the Saiyan saga) , and early concept art back when Goku and Oolong looked way more like their JttW counterparts had Bulma as a Cowgirl https://thed...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

The problem with DB is that it's showing its age. Even One Piece made sure to include rules in its logic to ensure you don't have the problem that DB currently has. It's something that modern shonen does. By having a complex rule set, it keeps the main character from being overpowered, as well as al...

Re: Asian characters in Dragon Ball

I don't get where people are getting the 'Bulma is white' idea from. She's from "The West" and her character is a stereotype of bratty Eruropean/American women. And like Masenko said, she has a gun. Guns and Cheeseburgers are like the go-to stereotypes for American characters in Eastern w...

Re: Dub-fans, was there an adjustment period for you when Goku started to be portrayed correctly in DBS?

What context did I ignore? I know tone shifts throughout the show but it's not just one direction. How does Goku become more heroic? Seriously? Compare Goku when he first appears in the Pilaf arc to how Goku is during the Red Ribbon Army arc? Sure Pilaf is a villian, but again, because the tone of ...

Re: Westerners love to claim Asian characters.

Goku and the other Saiyans can't be Asians because they come from a different planet with different continents. However, yeah, it makes sense for Goku to be coded as East Asian. Aslo, are there really people who actually say shit like "Goku is a white person"? I've absolutely heard this a...

Re: Dub-fans, was there an adjustment period for you when Goku started to be portrayed correctly in DBS?

Again, the problem here is that you guys are ignoring context. Especially since the tone of Dragon Ball radically shifts and morphs throughout the franchise. The first half of Dragon Ball is a gag manga, so more of the cast's sociopathic tendencies come out for the sake of humor. This noticeably get...

Re: Dub-fans, was there an adjustment period for you when Goku started to be portrayed correctly in DBS?

Not really. The difference is quality of writing. While Toriyama may have intended Goku to be selfish, he wrote him in a way that made him a likable protagonist despite his flaws. That's not really the case for Super and why a lot of people, including myself, had issue with the character.

Re: Dub-fans, was there an adjustment period for you when Goku started to be portrayed correctly in DBS?

For a short time I didn't want to accept it, but I eventually came around to it and realized this was actually a far more interesting character to boot. So...here's my thing: I think either people misinterpreted that Toriyama quote, or Toriyama himself doesn't get his own character. Because while G...

Re: 2021 Dragonball Game predictions?

FighterZ still seems to be going strong, so I don’t think there’s much of a need for a sequel. The most obvious choice for a new game would be Xenoverse 3, although I’m not sure they’d be able to offer much in terms of new characters. I guess they could include Moro, but I assume they’d want him to...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

I’ll probably be crucified for this but I don’t care. Super is much, MUCH better than Z ever was. This is coming from someone who’s been a fan in the early 90’s before the Z dub was even a thing. Outside of the Saiyan and Namek arcs, Z is incredibly dull and boring with barely any humor at all. Sup...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

There's a difference between acknowledging differences between various forms of mediums and preferring a version of it, and claiming that japanese dubs represent the "real" version of DBZ, that anyone who accepts Funimation's remastering is being duped or somehow not wanting the best for ...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

Can y'all define what you actually mean by "gatekeeping" here, though? Because I keep seeing it tossed around here and in other threads, and from what context I have to go on, it seems to generally mean "I don't like it when people say they don't like the thing I like." And that...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

Meh we are splitting peas and carrots at this point. As long as the main overarching story and character motivations are the same as the original then i'm happy. I can deal with a few one off lines here and there. I like both OG 90s dub for all its flaws and Kai dub equally and I'm glad Kai was giv...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

I can completely understand why Funimation have gone back to their old approach for Super. Many of the purists who spent years rallying against the Z dub still refuse to watch the Kai dub, despite it being mostly very accurate and well acted. They literally refuse to watch anything other than the o...

Yes it is pathetic when another user tries to horn in on a discussion between two people for no reason other then to try and cause trouble. Anyways thank you for the video, that was very interesting and informative. To further get back on topic I agree that dubs shouldn't have to bend over backward...
