I remember hearing that something similar happend with Tenshinhan's name and that's why they called him tie[n] in the dub, don't know if thats true or not. But mouth flaps are a possibility that I've never thought of.

When people call the entire series "dragon ball Z". When people say I'm wrong for saying "Tenshinhan" and "Mr. Satan" or that I'm spelling Freeza wrong and that Tie n Hercul e and Fr(i)za are right.

Tri-Beam is still used. Solar Flare returns during the Freeza arc (I believe, anyway; for sure it's used in the Cell arc), Distructo Disc also makes a return down the line and Special Beam Cannon as well, I think.
