Macrons for Gokū
I've seen you use macrons for other words. Shouldn't you do that with Gokū as well? You know, to stay consistent? There may be other words left out without macrons, not sure.
Not that I really mind, just curious.

Re: Macrons for Gokū
I googled "macrons" and was presented with pictures of macarons (the pastry) and instantly got the mental image of Goku eating/enjoying a bunch of them.
If there were a quick easy way to type Gokū I would totally use it because it's more indicative of how the name sounds when spoken aloud, but because there isn't I tend to not do so.
I mean, I could type it "Gokuu", but I don't think that spelling is widely known enough for people to not think I was spelling it wrong if I were to switch over (and endlessly having to point out that it's not would be too much of a hassle.)
So that's kind of my guess for why they may not use Gokū on the site; you'd lose time either pasting the ū in every time you type his name or having to "ctrl + numbers" for it.

This is why I just write out the full romanized kana.

Re: Macrons for Gokū
I still prefer Gokuh. I mean, it's written on his clothes, so it makes sense to use that spelling.
Anyhow, I think the reason the site doesn't use the macron spelling is because they just don't...for any character names.

I think content from Kanzentai uses with on "Kaiō."

With all the fancy whistles and bells computers have now, I'm sure it's not a problem for someone to type out an ō or a ū.hleV wrote:I've seen you use macrons for other words. Gokuh or Gokuu are both correct though.

Yup. The styles guide lists "Kaiō-sama" with macron and italic honorific.Zestanor wrote:I think content from Kanzentai uses with on "Kaiō."
Also listed with macrons: Gyūmaō, all of the Kaiōshin, Muten Rōshi, Ôzaru, most of the named attacks, Nyoi-Bō, Tenka’ichi Budōkai, and a few minor characters I don't recognize.

I personally don't think there should be one. I can understand it for things like Hurcule and Fri.eza but making sure u comes out as ū seems a bit over excessive.

Re: Macrons for Gokū
Some of it's convenience, some of it's just because that's what we were used to using, et cetera, et cetera. We do use the "Gokū" spelling when we're doing a straight transliteration from Japanese, because that's what's there, but we'll usually drop the macron when we're writing in English. The reason we don't adhere to the same convention for other words is... well, no real reason, except that it's what we do.
I have to say, though, that it's much easier to do macrons on an iPhone or an iPad. You just hold down the vowel until you get a pop-up menu with a bunch of accent choices. On a computer, I always have to have the "character viewer" window open and input manually, which is why on Daizenshuu EX, we always cheated and went with a circumflex accent instead.
And now you know.

But then you have Goku and Kanzenshuu. Doesn't help me to become consistent

Trust me, we've talked about the lack of consistency with "Daizenshuu" and "Kanzenshuu" spellings .

I vote for a "naming consistency revolution" sometime in the future (perhaps when the Wiki opens up?). Kanzenshuu → Kanzenshū (and maybe kanzenshu.com). Keyboard setup for macrons.

In case anyone didn't get it, VegettoEX meant kanzenshu.com, it's just filtered (and only avoidable with BBCode).

Re: Macrons for Gokū
Oh, we filtered the one-"u" version of the name? I probably did that early on to avoid confusion. And of course I have no memory of this.
