Episode #0441! Mike and Julian discuss "The Adventure of Tongpoo", a one-shot Akira Toriyama drew in 1983 which served as one step along the way to creating "Dragon Ball" itself. What feels different here from "Dragon Boy" earlier that same year? We wrap things up with a look at a series of drafts taking us from a straight "Journey to the West" adaptation up to the characters and story we know and love as "Dragon Ball"-proper!

SEGMENTS:
00:13 - Introduction
03:00 - Topic

REFERENCED SITES: (I switched to the back-up recording of Julian about halfway through due to some weird local-side-only artifacting/clicking that I can't diagnose... and yet somehow doesn't show up in the Skype track. I dunno, man. Always record a back-up for situations like this!)

Loved this episode too! So cool to see it evolve, I kinda like Goku in those shorts, and the drawings of him riding on the missile-plane remind me a lot of some of the manga covers early in the series, like Chapters 25, 41 and 125, as well as the art for the fourth Tankobon.

One thing I noticed is that, in the cover for Chapter 29, Goku seems to be intentionally drawn with references to these proto-Dragon Ball stories. He has a pilot's goggle-cap like Tongpoo on his cover, the shorts and boots of the earlier "missile rider" design, and has a segmented staff like the Monkey Boy draft. And, in the cover for Chapter 52, Goku is riding on a missile-plane that's strikingly similar to the second and third design drafts! Pretty awesome mythology nods if they were indeed intentional.

In regards to the Kinto'un name, I think it was done slightly differently to make it clear that the cloud is an object or item, rather than a technique you use to ride on any cloud. I can also see Toriyama sort of lamenting the No. 9 bike, the one Launch is on in the Ch. 26 cover has a similar design.

Looking through the page samples, I LOVE the design of Plamo! The long hair with the beanie and a spunky expression are fantastic design elements, and I'm kinda surprised Bulma never had long-down hair like that at any point. Kinda makes me think of Bulla actually for some reason. Dragon Boy's master in his story actually reminds me of the first opponent Goku defeats in the 21st preliminaries, Fighter 83. Probably not intentional, but I love the idea that Goku trounces Dragon Boy's master as his first opponent in an official match.
