Episode #0471! Mike, Julian, and Ian review Toyotaro's "debut" manga series (in an official capacity, anyway): "Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission" from 2012-2014. The odd little promotional manga that could somehow grew into a legitimate serialization and arguably shaped the future of the "Dragon Ball Heroes" franchise for years to come. What lasting impact do we still see all these years later, and how does "Victory Mission" itself still hold up?

SEGMENTS:
  • 00:13 – Introduction
  • 06:58 – Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission
  • 67:42 – Wrap-up

Oh man!

I've been raving about Victory Mission for so long, despite still not being able to read past about issue 15 due to no translation being available.
It's nuts, and I'm glad to see it getting some coverage! :)

I really like Victory Mission and think it's accidentally(?) the only take that's managed to make a next-generation DB concept feel somewhat interesting and compelling. And it's a promo manga.

Best DB spin-off manga too, though that's almost a backhanded compliment.

Haha. I do agree.
It's interesting, it's almost like Dragon Ball Yu-Gi-Oh. It's certainly one of the better uses of the Dragon Ball Heroes brand; it's actually just a delight. :)

I just wish someone would translate the remaining chapters so I can read more.

Late to the party for this one, but I just gave the episode a listen and enjoyed it quite a bit: I'm eager to give the manga a look now! I also really enjoyed hearing the three of you talk about the themes in GT and how a certain drawing from Hobby Consolas magazine ended up playing such a big role in the Dragon Ball franchise. I do feel a little bad for David Montiel Franco, who drew that picture of what we all thought was meant to be Super Saiyan 5 Goku (but was actually a fan-made character), as he's never gotten the full recognition he likely deserves. He's becoming more well-known now that he's doing his own AF manga, but he's still relatively obscure compared to Toyble/Toyotarou. I mean, if Toyotarou's pitch for Victory Mission was actually his AF series... then he kind of owes David his career :P
