Episode #0489! Mike and Ian discuss the evolving craft of the "Dragon Ball Super" manga series and all four of its key players: just how involved is Akira Toriyama in the most recent two arcs, how creative is Toyotarō allowed or encouraged to be, and how much authority do Akio Iyoku and Victory Uchida hold over the entire process? From drafts to dialogue to delivery, we bring the receipts!

Good summary. One funny thing to mention re: Jiren's original super hero-esque personality in the anime is that this made its way into the English localisation of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 where all of Jiren's dialogue is about justice prevailing over evil etc and he's more upbeat. I believe the anime either didn't have an English dub or it hadn't gotten to the tournament of power by that stage. I'm not sure if the Japanese is has a similar script.

I didn't know that the idea of Goku Black was a pitch to Toriyama, but it makes sense. Seems in the same ballpark of an idea as Broly and RoF in terms of getting Toriyama to give his own spin on something the fans would want.

My interpretation is that the 原作 credit you see in anime serves the same purpose as the "Batman created by Bob Kane" type credit you see at the beginning of literally every piece of Batman media, for example. So I've been borrowing that wording whenever I translate anime credits. I can't think of a single instance where translating 原作:鳥山明 as "Dragon Ball created by Akira Toriyama" doesn't work.

If I recall correctly, what was pitched to Toriyama was the idea to bring back Future Trunks. Goku Black was a Toriyama idea.
