DragonBall Kai DVD 2: Cover Art.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Thu Sep 17, 2009 11:11 pm

As reported on kanzentai.com, here is the cover art for the second DragonBall Kai DVD. I think it's rather... boring. Thoughts?

The only thing that really stands out to me is how Piccolo looks to be slightly styled towards older artwork for him.

Could benefit from a background setting. Everyone appears to be floating in the middle of nowhere. ^^;

I like the color scheme though.

EDIT: It's totally the empty white space. Went to Kanzentai and looked at the other cover and found it more eye-pleasing: Image

Don't this here thread belong in the Kai section?

It looks like a textbook. Thumb down.

The DVD case is... bland. I don't like it. The Blu-Ray on the other hand, is acceptable. It could be better. Give me some character art and a copy of photoshop and I'll create something that looks better than that.

When I first saw the DVD cover I thought Piccolo's turban was a dress that Oozaru Gohan was wearing. :P

Bad color scheme, mixing red and white and throwing Piccolo on it.

It'd be better A) with a solid red, maybe some sort of Photoshopped effect, but still red, and B) no Gohan, make Piccolo's badass smirk the selling point.

If I wasn't such a lazy bastard or had Photoshop on this computer, I'd probably toy around with that.

EDIT: What's with the unusually good English diatribe?

Is this stuff all gonna be new art? The shot of Pic is definitely modern (how his face is drawn and the way it's toned) but I don't recognize it. If it is we should be getting some nice shiny stuff out of all the disks these'll require, especially if both releases have separate covers ^__^

It kinda amuses me on this one in particular how they're trying to draw the man to look like he did earlier on, but they can't bridge through the new style to imitate it properly. And I know it's kinda sad, but I can deal with almost any bad compositional choices if it means more good Piccolo art.

While technically new, I instantly recognised that picture.

I got it from MajinTenshinhan. It's not part of any released translation (It's a bunch of notepad files), I just did it for that one frame when I cropped it out.

Ooooh, I see. The coloring must have thrown me off then, it's very post-GT (not quite so harsh but still nothing like the original toning). It's not nearly as bad at the straight white highlights, but it still looks much sexier as a panel in comparison.

So perhaps all the kai dvd-versions are recolored manga shots?

Well, the giant monkey pose is pretty common, but it does look like this page: http://i29.tinypic.com/2zzlthj.jpg

And the Gohan image is from this page: http://i29.tinypic.com/27zlzj5.jpg

The blu-ray cover is a totally new image as far as I know though.

Ah, OK. That line about "evil clansman" makes it sound like Piccolo's talking about the KKK.

 I thought the same thing!

Other than the hilarious mental images it will give me of dress wearing Oozaru, I don't really like this cover.
