How did the retained voices turn out in your opinion?

Post by Ree » Mon Aug 31, 2015 11:56 am

inspired by this thread, http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... 16&t=22186
but this one is about those who kept their actors instead of those who got recast
do you think they got better, got worse, stayed the same, what?
I'll bold the ones i think are good.
-> PLEASE note that I DO NOT HATE FUNIMATION!! <-

Goku: okay but not youthful enough. i'll say his screams are amazing even though they sound almost too different from the character. I think he'll be good as SS3Goku.
Vegeta: does NOT work for an evil Prince of Saiyans. (explained in the C. Sabat's new voice thread)
Trunks (any): terrible raspy voice and he managed to get even worst. He sounds too old too.
Goten: too cutesy. kids don't talk like that!
Krillin: Pretty good.
Yajirobe: could live with it or without it.
Piccolo: No character or depth. the acting isn't horrible but he just reads lines.
Tien: too deep and gravely and forgettable.
Chiaotzy: see Goten
Yamcha: not memorable, just a stock voice.
Kaio: too screechy and sounds TERRIBLE either talking normal or showing some emotion.
Recomme: too moronic and... that's all there is to his voice!
Chichi: see Kaio.
Raditz: WAY WAY too sugar-rushed and hyper.
Cell: Good! although imperfect could use some work...
Master Roshi: sounds many decades too young and he's too goofy. for a younger Roshi it would be my favorite probably.

i'll update the OP with my full thoughts when I see more.

Most of them got better, those that didn't more or less stayed the same, but they had better dialog to deliver, and better direction.

I can't name anyone off the top of my head I didn't think improved at least a little bit. Guess an extra decade of experience can't hurt you all too much.

Most of them improved a lot and now are almost perfect for the characters they play. Except for Vale, he got better as a voice actor but his voice is now too raspy for Trunks, when it was fine back in Z. He doesn't suit Trunks at all anymore.

I can't believe i forgot that. Trunks' rasp has gotten FAR worse at the same time Vale has improved. The former almost negates the latter. If you listen to his voice in the episodes in Z where Trunks is introduced, his voice is very natural, just a higher pitch because Vale is voicing a teenager. However, the delivery left quite a bit to be desired, but you could hear that he had talent, just needed more seasoning. If he could combine that voice and his experience, it would be perfect.

Because rasp isn't about acting. Other than the rasp, his performance is more believable, it's not stilted, there's a much more natural sound to his delivery.

Yes
Goku: okay but not youthful enough. i'll say his screams are amazing even though they sound almost too different from the character. I think he'll be good as SS3Goku.
Vegeta: does NOT work for an evil Prince of Saiyans. (explained in the C. Sabat's new voice thread)
Trunks (any): terrible raspy voice and he managed to get even worst. He sounds too old too.
Goten: too cutesy. kids don't talk like that!
Krillin: Pretty good.
Yajirobe: could live with it or without it.
Guru: poor. He doesn't sound old, he doesn't sound wise, he doesn't sound Namekian and he doesn't sound good
Piccolo: No character or depth. the acting isn't horrible but he just reads lines.
Tenshinhan: too deep and gravely and forgettable.
Chiaotzy: see Goten
Yamcha: not memorable, just a stock voice.
Recomme: too moronic and... that's all there is to his voice!
Chichi: see Kaio.
Raditz: WAY WAY too sugar-rushed and hyper.
Nappa: doesnt sound like an Elite Saiyan, just some schmuck.
Cell: Good! although imperfect could use some work...
Goten is cute and no one talks like they do in DB, it works.
The Grand Elder's voice wasn't the same in Kai as it was in Z.
Tenshinhan's voice is deep and in Kai, there's no gravel.
Chaozu isn't a kid
Yamcha's voice is fine, it's natural and it fits.
What should an elite sound like?
Which imperfect form are you referring to?
Piccolo: What show are you watching? There is depth and there is emotion.
I'm not the biggest fan of young Trunks, but he improved A LOT in Battle of Gods.
Goku's not youthful enough? At what point in the series are you talking about?

There has to be more to a performance than cute and it can't be too overdone
I thought it was the same actor? either way its not good.
yeah but its too deep for me. Its not as bad as before but still dosent sound natural enough
still too cutesy though
It may be not terrible but its still stock
Like he's better than you, he can rip you apart, like a military officer, his voice should put you in your place the moment his mouth opens
The first one
I watched clips of each series and listened to clips from the games and he SUCKED. he doesn't get into the character enough.
ill have to see more of Trunks
he doesn't capture his youth the way the others do. Ian was a great young Goku, then Peter was misplaced but still could have worked in late DB before the Z series starts but at least the change happened early, then Kirby is amazing as an older Goku that is still youthful

Still don't know what a Namekian is supposed to sound like and why not sounding like one is bad.
Goten is supposed to be cute, he's a happy naïve 7 year old.
Vegeta sounds fine, Sabat nails the arrogant prince even when he was evil.
Future Trunks didn't have the rasp in Z which is a plus. But the acting is better in Kai.
Nappa, once again, what is an elite Saiyan supposed to sound like? He's a brute and a hothead, that's what he should sound like
using the games for Cell isn't exactly a valid point, considering Dameon Clarke didn't even voice Cell in the PS3/360 era games.

Most of them are very much better than there were in Z or DB. Schemmel and Sabat specifically are the biggest improvements.

He's not just cute
It's pretty easy to hear that it's not the same actor, and I have
What does "too deep" even mean? How should it sound?
Chaozu's voice in the dub is similar to the original.
What pray tell does a military officer sound like? Nappa does sound like a brute that will rip you apart.
Clarke's Imperfect Cell voice is awesome. It's bug and creepy.
Kirby isn't amazing. His voice is very generic and doesn't fit Goku at all. Schemmel is a good actor that has plenty of youthful energy. Ian is a great actor, but his Goku isn't really Goku.
What do you mean by stock?
How does Sabat not get into the Piccolo character enough?

first, Dbzfan94:

A Namekian should at least sound different to a human. I shouldnt be able to look up "human Piccolo" on deviantart or google images and attach it to him.
the problem is it falls flat. Saffron Gohan sounds cute and it has more layers.
See my Vegeta thoughts in more detail on the C. Sabat's new voice thread
Its overshadowed by the rasp though
Nappa: explained earlier (just realized hes not a "retained" voice... have to remove him later)
I only used the games for Piccolo but I actually didnt know he had a different voice in the last gen games

now, ABED:

Describe Goten's kid voice in more words then
I realize now , have to remove him
It shouldnt be any deeper than Harmony Gold's voice
I dont judge voices because they sound or dont sound like the originals.
Loud, booming, confident, as well as what I said earlier.
Never said it was bad, its just not ideal though he did do it the best.
Kirby IS amazing. define "generic". Hes a good actor but I dont think he has quite a lot of youthful energy. Ian's Goku is not Goku? what does that mean?
You can place it on just anyone.

How do you make him sound non human? It's a human actor playing the character, and Namekians are humanoids. By your logic, no actor is great at voicing Piccolo.
Generic - bland, can't pick the voice out of a line up, non distinctive. He's probably a good actor, but not as this character. His deliveries don't capture Goku's youthful exuberance. Ian's Goku is just that - not Goku. Goku is a man child obsessed with fighting and training. Ian makes Goku sound like a mild mannered superhero, he's not all that childlike.
You say Sabat's Yamcha is a stock voice, but you ask me to define generic?
Why shouldn't the voice sound any deeper than the Harmony Gold dub? Why is that the standard?
My father was a military officer, so I can tell you, what you are asking isn't military, it's Hollywood military officer. And the Saiyans weren't a military really. They were a bunch of savage mercenaries. Nappa's voice is commanding and confident, and it makes him sound sufficiently bullheaded.

Scott doesn't sound like Piccolo as a human. he sounds like Piccolo.
Kirby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay6moTUKreo
Ian: he does have childlike qualities and it fits the character.
I defined stock: a voice that could fit just as well on just any random dude.
a young adult should sound like a young adult and he at least sounds his age.
The HG dub has the right pitch for him.
what sets him apart from Hollywood military?

It's clearly a human voice for Piccolo. Piccolo is humanoid.
what sets him apart from Hollywood military?
He doesn't have to make it sound like he was in the military and commanded respect. He didn't put on an act. They all don't sound like over the top drill sergeants. Military me
I defined stock: a voice that could fit just as well on just any random dude.
First off, that's not a knock, second, he sounds natural, and third, Sabat has a distinctive voice. You can easily pick out which charcters he's voicing, regardless, so your point isn't even true. Kirby's voice isn't distinctive in the least.

Oh, I forgot Sonny Strait. I still don't think he fits Kuririn's character. His laughs in particular are, like Schemmel's, too goofy.

I'm pretty down with all the dub voices for Kai and the new movies except for Josh Martin's Fat Buu. It was never cute, it was never funny, it was just obnoxious. Which is weird, because whoever did Super Buu and Kid Buu (in Z) sounded fine.

Josh Martin voiced Kid Buu and Justin Cooke voiced Super Buu. Martin is great as Kid Buu, terrible as Fat Buu, and Cooke is a bad actor all around, including as Super Buu. Both men will likely keep their respective roles in Kai.
