Tonight on "Things to Make You Feel Old"

Post by Ringworm128 » Thu Jan 07, 2021 4:34 am

So I just realized this year will be the 11th anniversary Funimation's dub of Dragon Ball (Z) Kai being released on home media, and airing on Nicktoons. Meaning it's now the same age the old "Season 3" dub that started using the in-house cast was when it first started airing. Time sure does fly, huh?

What does this have to do with the topic? I'm lib-right. If that worries you so much, I dunno; go stew over it in a dark room or something?

Wow, derailed after the first reply.
Anyway, yes, time does fly. We can extend this to the entire franchise, really.
The Dragon Ball Super anime ended almost three years ago (not counting DBS:BR), for example. Battle of Gods is almost 8 years old. Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return is 12 years old, and since it's often considered the start of "Modern" Dragon Ball, that means that "Modern" Dragon Ball has lasted almost as long as "Classic" Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi and Dragon Ball Episode of Bardock are both turning ten years old. And I remember clearly those coming out as if it was yesterday, especially the latter.

Feeling old? Just don't forget that Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection and Dragon Ball Z: for Kinect will turn ten next year already (as well as the end of the world, for that matter.).

Why do you need to bring that up? The topic had nothing to do with that.

Also 10 years since my beloved Toonzai! Thanks topic creator!

This forum is so over-dramatic that it's not even funny.

Holy crap, i can't believe that it's really been almost just over a decade since Kai debuted over here on home video and TV. Especially seeing as it was the first new Dragon Ball related content i had seen in a while and what reignited my interest in the series.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Man, I am 32... I am already old in all fandoms and it doesn't matter what was released when... I am as old as Street Fighter franchise and the first game in the series looks like shit... I remember PS1 being released as a new console, being totally blown away by it.

Also had Game Boy Color on holidays in elementary school as state of the art technology... and later, N-Gage.
If I knew back then, that I will have cellphone more powerful than PS1, where I can do everything from watching porn to plan stuff and comunicate with everyone in matter of seconds and internet fast as hell, I would die of cardiac arrest...

So, DB Kai is more than 10 years old now... wow, I guess I will go and think how did I wasted the last ten years and remember how much time I have spent with shit looking games with barebones content in my childhood, when now I think it's normal to see skin pores, muscle movement or blades of hair in video game...

So, I am old at all times, it is not just a feeling

I can't believe how fast time moves. I know Kai has many issues, but for me it's the best way of experiencing the Z part of the original manga. I really wish they would've done a Kai version of the original DB as well.

I believe that there is some fan doing it. With english dub though.

I've come across multiple ones in the past few years. They're good for fan products, but I would've preferred an official one from the ground up.

I would be fan of Kai, if it didn’t had weird redrawn scenes, up to Cell arc and then Buu arc rebranded as Final Chapters with horrible score from Sumitomo. The whole Kai is a trainwreck to me and shows how crap and cheap TOEI is with their shows. I could see it being done much like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood instead.

Only thing I like about Kai is the faster pacing. I still prefer Z but on the recent rewatch, the panning being done by the rest of the cast just standing and stating the obvious what is happening gets kinda tiresome. Not to mention that lot of episodes of Z are almost on par with the infamous episode 5 of Super, it is just saved by film grain and more detailed ink lines of film drawings. I am just rewatching Freeza arc and 3 of 5 episodes look horrible.

Kai's production is definitely a mess, but what makes up for that (for me) is the faster pacing and superior dub.

The year those episodes aired was the first year they switched to making 2 movies per year instead of 1, so it put a lot of pressure on the staff, as well as taking a lot of the good ones away from the show.

Even Super's is... and also when TOEI did Saint Seiya Soul Of Gold, which was supposed to run on paid channels, streaming and being released on Blu-rays (with touch ups of course), it also looked horrible on all platforms. I wonder what TOEI is doing really if I compare them to Sunrise, or rather Studio Pierot that did Naruto, which is also huge series per episode count.

Luckily, as I grew up on French and German dub, english dub of Japanese franchises never landed on me and don't know why it sounds so bad, until recently as the dubbing got better. I never got into the problems with US dub, just heard it years ago as it ran on CN, the Saban version and was horrified. So I am actually watching Japanese original with subs all the time on releases.
But it must really suck that the original series is almost unwatchable.

Sometimes, the FighterZ voice track switches to english cast when you play with host that has english voices and I still don't like it much... it's not that bad, but I don't like the over the top voice overs and Teen Gohan is horrible... he sounds like middle aged woman.
But, I was suprised by adult Gohan, his voice actor is actually great and I really wonder how he manages to sound so young even tough he must be long over his 50s?

Funny thing is that I got into the Japanese version first trough SNES ports and PS1 games of European DBZ releases, that retained the Japanese voice cast and later Polish TV was airing Dragon Ball GT with Japanese voice track dubbed over by one guy reading the lines

Hey Ringworm! I still have you quoted after like 10 years hahaha I actually have been going through the broadcast airings of Kai again with Yamamotto and I kinda thought it'd been cool (even though it is Z) if Kai got its own special Kai movie. new bad guy(s) etc. idk. thought it'd been neat. :)
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128
Still recording Toonami broadcasts on VHS after all these years!

I remember back in 2012 some thought that Battle of Gods would be released under the Kai brand, which it may have had Kai taken off the way they wanted it to.

I know it's not like ancient history, but one time in school, in 5th grade, a friend of mine and I were talking about Kai. I think the Cell games either just started in the most recent episode or was about to, and I bragged mentioned I already knew what was going to happen in the story because at that point I played a couple of the video games. Later we were in the computer lab and we goofed off, looked up random stuff about cartoons, video games, watched YT videos, etc., and we both learned that there was a Dragon Ball Z game released that day: Ultimate Tenkaichi, on October 25, 2011. I was super excited, I begged my mom if I can get a new game when I got home, and she said yes, chewed me out because of how expensive it was when we got there (we were used to buying used/discounted games), but I got it the day of release when I just heard about it.

I had a great time, but I got stuck forever when fighting a great ape because I couldn't mash the Y button fast enough. Ironically, I haven't played the game in years because I don't own an Xbox 360 anymore, so I have no idea if it holds up, but that'll always be something Dragon Ball related from youth that will stick with me.

God, the original Kai dub brings me back. I used to catch some episodes back when I was a kid. I wasn't even a DB fan yet, but I'd still watch it. I recently watched the entire Kai series and loved it, but I do plan on watching the OG dub.

Kai’s Funimation dub started a couple weeks after a graduated high school. The fact that there are young adult fans who grew up with Kai as kids makes me feel super old
